The Renal Diet.

● Order as: No Salt Added & Limit Potassium (K+)


● What is it? Mild K+ and Sodium restriction
● Indications: ESRD with dialysis
● Justification:
○ Sodium: assist with balancing amount of sodium and fluid in the body inhibited
by poor kidney function
○ Potassium: high blood levels of potassium can result in a heart attack

● High K+ foods include:


Potatoes Tomatoes/tomato products Oranges

Bananas Prunes Spinach

Dried beans/fruits Peas Peanut butter

Squash Cantaloupe/honeydew Chocolate


★ A list of high K+ foods is also posted in the TCU area!

● Bistro: modified Renal diet menu is available to assist with


meal selection
● Be patient centered: restrictions are different for every
patient depending on severity of condition. Refer to RD order
and instruction.

Some low K+ foods to offer as a good alternative include (½ c each):


● Apples ● Green beans ● Cucumbers
● Berries ● Asparagus ● Iceberg lettuce
● Grapes ● White grains ● Onion
● Peaches ● Peppers ● Cauliflower
