Dawn’t Belittle Macandili
Alyssa Valdez. Jaja Santiago. Mika Reyes.
Do these names ring a bell? In volleyball match ups, people tend to remember
mostly the spikers and blockers maybe because they generate mostly the team’s score
but, how about for the defense? Ever see a player wearing opposite shirt color? They are
responsible for keeping the ball alive and preventing the other team to have a point. They
are the liberos and let us be honest, they do not get enough credits for that.
Nowadays, Filipinos are very hooked in such ball games like basketball and
volleyball. Juan Dela Cruz’s support in these sports can be clearly seen everywhere you
go. In the recent 19th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship, Dawn Nicole
Macandili, the Philippine defense specialist was named as second best libero in Asia. Her
achievement shook all of the volleyball fans and got her name in the trending list in
Twitter.
Supposedly, Denden Lazaro was the official libero. But, after having hamstring
injury in the team’s exhibition match prior to the Asian Championship in Binan, Laguna,
Head Coach Francis Vicente opted to prioritize Lazaro’s health who was among the A-
listers in the team. Macadili, however, is a wise choice, contributing a great defense
bringing the Philippines 8th place out of 14 countries.
Back then, Macandili played briefly in grade school for De La Salle Lipa before
moving on to play high school volleyball for De La Salle Zobel and in De La Salle
Manila in college. In a sport ruled by taller players, Macandili never considered her
height as a disadvantage and she eagerly worked her way to unto the top. Although she
lacks in height, she definitely makes up with her work ethic and perseverance, something
she has been doing since she started playing volleyball back in the fifth grade.
“Small but, terrible.” This is what exactly describes her as a key player in the
Philippine team. Macandili successfully converted her weakness into her strength which
made her a world class volleyball player. Despite of being a 5 foot 3 inches volleyball
player, Macandili stood 10 feet, head held high, bringing the all the glory back to our
Philippines. Now, in our own lives, the question is: Do you have a Dawn Macandili
inside you?
