TUTORIAL PLAN – Batting Activities
Unit: HPE 2203: Physical Performance Laboratory 3 Topic: Cricket
Batting Activity #1
Hitting off the tee - Stage 1 – basic skills
Instructions Batter hits the ball off the tee towards the fielders and the cones
they stand on/near. Fielders stop the ball and hold onto it until the
batter has hit three balls. Balls are thrown back to the wicket keeper
who then swaps places with the batter. 2 fielders remain where they
are until both the batter and starting wicket keeper have had a go; 4
group members then swap places so wicket keeper and batter are
fielders.
Variation and Fielders stop the ball and throw it back at the stumps
progression immediately to add in the skill of fielding and throwing.
LEST Learners – Groups of 4 ideally – can work with groups of 5,
just add an extra fielder.
Equipment – 1 set of stumps, 1 bat, 1 tee, 3 balls, 2 Cones.
Space – Can be set up as train tracks or in a circle so
interference with other groups is limited.
Time – Allow all students to have at least one go at batting.
Can let it run longer if it is working well and students are not
ready for a progression. May work for 7-10 minutes
depending on the group.

Batting Activity #2
Hitting off the tee - Stage 2 – more complex skills
Instructions Batter hits the ball off the tee aiming at the gaps between the
1
fielders and the cones in order to score 4 (between the two outside
cones) or six (between the middle cones) points. Fielders stop the
ball and throw it back to the wicket keeper – each batter gets 6 hits
and counts runs. Wicket keeper then swaps places with the batter. 2
fielders remain where they are until both the batter and starting
wicket keeper have had a go; 4 group members then swap places
so wicket keeper and batter become fielders.
Variation and Fielders must pick a gap to stand in front of and batter aims
progression at the other gap.
LEST Learners – Groups of 4 ideally – can work with groups of 5,
just add an extra fielder or scorer.
Equipment – 1 set of stumps, 1 bat, 1 tee, 3 balls, 4 Cones.
Space – Can be set up as train tracks or in a circle so
interference with other groups is limited.
Time – Allow all students to have at least one go at batting.
Can let it run longer if it is working well and students are not
ready for a progression. May work for 10-12 minutes
depending on the group.

Batting Activity #3
Hitting off the tee - Stage 3 - tactics
Instructions Only three cones set up, one fielder comes in close and the other is
behind the cones. Batter hits the ball off the tee towards aiming at
the gaps between the fielders and the cones – calling yes or no to
running based on where the ball goes. Fielders stop the ball and
throw it back to the wicket keeper – each batter gets 6 hits and
counts runs. Wicket keeper then swaps places with the batter. 2
fielders remain where they are until both the batter and starting
wicket keeper have had a go; 4 group members then swap places
so wicket keeper and batter become fielders.
Variation and Batter encouraged to hit the ball over the closer fielders.
progression Fielders can change position after each ball to experiment
2
with different fielding positions.
Batters can place the ball on the tee and the tee on a single
stump so it is higher and they can stand side on and
practice a cut shot.
LEST Learners – Groups of 4 ideally – can work with groups of 5,
just add an extra fielder or scorer.
Equipment – 1 set of stumps, 1 bat, 1 tee, 1 ball, 3 Cones.

ready for a progression. May work for up to 12 minutes
depending on the group.
