You are the conductor of the orchestra and you need to know where all the different
instruments of the orchestra sit. First, draw yourself on the diagram below where
the conductor would stand. Now, follow the directions below and colour in each
section the appropriate colour.
Strings = BLUE Percussion = RED Woodwind = GREEN Brass = YELLOW
When you have finished colouring in the diagram, read the directions again and write
the names of the instrument or instruments in the coloured sections.

Directions for Labels


The Percussion and Timpani sit in the long section at the back of the Orchestra. The
Harp occupies the smallest space. There are so many Violins in the Orchestra that
they are split into two sections. The 1st Violins sit to your left with the 2nd Violins
next to them. The Violas are directly in front of you (the conductor). The Cellos are
to your right with the Double Basses behind them which completes the string section
(which is the largest).

The Flutes and Piccolo share the same section and sit behind the Violas to the left
with the Oboes next to them that also share the same space as the Cor Anglais. The
Bassoons and Double Bassoons sit in the same space and are behind the Oboes and
the Clarinets and Bass Clarinets are behind the Flutes and Piccolo. The French Horns
sit behind the Clarinets with the Trumpets on their right and the Trombones and
Tuba share the last space which completes the orchestra.
