Pocket Chart Reader

Purpose: This activity will help teach the student’s vocabulary and
work on their sentence structure. This will also help the students learn
the pronunciation of words.

Materials: A pocket chart, a pointer and a words/ pictures.

Procedures:

1. The student can either construct their own sentence using

pictures or words or even both. Also the teacher can also create a
sentence for the students.
2. Once a sentence is made a student will come up and use a pointer
and read the sentence aloud.
3. The student will touch each word with the pointer and say the
word.
4. Repeat with another sentence/ student

 Sight Word Maze

Purpose: This activity will help teach the student’s sight words as well
as help them recognize them.

Materials: A sheet with sight words on it and markers.

Procedures:

1. The student will have a sheet with 4 to 5 sight words on it

2. Each sheet will have a word they need to find (Example: the letter
A)
3. You will start off at a picture and will have to find your way to the
end of the maze
4. The interesting thing is that you can only use that sight word to
find your way to the end
5. The student will take their marker and find their path to the end
of the maze
6. They can do this activity for all the sight words if they enjoyed it

 Sandwich Organizer

Purpose: This activity will help the student’s analyze their thoughts
when either deciphering a story they already read or to help them
organize their thoughts when creating a story themselves. It will help
create structure.

Materials: A sheet with this sandwich on it. (First piece of bread=Topic,

Tomatoes, Lettuce, Meat= Details, and last part of the bun is a
concluding sentence)

Procedures:

1. First step is to write down the topic

2. The next three steps is to write a key detail on the space
presented on the tomato, lettuce and on the meat
3. Lastly, the student will conclude their ideas off with a concluding
sentence
4. Then they can use this in either creating a story or to help them
understand a story they previously read

 Venn Diagram

Purpose: This activity will help the student’s compare and contrast.

Materials: A Venn Diagram (Two intersecting circles: two labeled

different or labeled the two different topics and where it intersects
write the same)

Procedures:

1. Write down the topics if not written down already on both of the
circles
2. Then write the differences of the two topics under each of there
associated names
3. Then write the similarities the two topics have with each other in
the middle
4. Then you can use the Venn Diagram to have a better
understanding of those topics

 Predictions

Purpose: This activity will help the student’s think and analyze

possible situations that could occur in a book/story they are reading.

Materials: No materials are needed unless the teacher wants you to

write down your prediction. If so, you will need a pencil and a piece of

paper.

Procedures:

1. The student will begin to think what could possibly occur next in a

book or they could also make a prediction before they read a book

to get their mind going

Purpose: This activity will help the student’s with their spelling.

Materials: The students will need blocks (that they can use to be able to

spell out words, like the ones shown in the picture).

Procedures:

1. The teacher will say a word aloud

2. The students will then take their blocks and have to try to the best

of their ability to spell that specific word

 Syllable Counting

Purpose: This activity will help the student’s be able to count the
amount of syllables are in each word. This will help them not only with
their reading skills but also with their math skills.
Materials: A chart with pictures on it with spaces underneath it for the
amount of possible syllables the word can have. You will also need
M&Ms or Skittles to use for the counting of the syllables

Procedures:

1. The student will have a chart of pictures

2. They will have to sound out or clap out the possible syllables of
each word
3. For every syllable they find in a word they will put a Skittle or
M&M

5. At the end they will see how many pieces of candy are for each
word

 Color & Read

Purpose: This activity will help the student’s on their comprehension

skills.

Materials: A sheet of paper with a picture on it as well as a sentence

that connects with the picture. Also will need colored pencils or
markers.

Procedures:

1. The student will read the sentence on the sheet

2. Comprehend what it means
3. Then color the picture (Example: if in the sentence it indicates
that the bird is blue the student will color the bird blue)

 Write About It!

Purpose: This activity will teach the students to be creative and make a
detailed description based off an object they observe but do not touch.
This will help with their writing and observation skills.

Materials: An object that the teacher shows the students. The students
will need a pencil and a pad of paper to record their observations.
Procedures:

1. The teacher will place/show an object to the students

2. Each student will have to observe that object t
3. Then they will have to write a detailed description about that
specific object
4. Then as a class the students will then discuss their observations

 Journal Entry

Purpose: This activity will help students work more at their writing
when they are continuously told to write in their journal. It will help
strengthen their writing, making them a better writer.

 Dr. Seuss

Purpose: This activity will help students with their sentence structure.

Materials: A sheet of paper with a Dr. Seuss question on it. Then enough
space to write your response out then based off your response you will
need room to draw a picture supporting your answer. Also you will
need colored pencils and a regular pencil.

Procedures:

1. After the teacher reads the students a Dr. Seuss book they will
give out a work sheet with a question pertaining to Dr. Seuss to
the students

 Follow the Yellow Brick Road

Purpose: This activity is a way to show the student’s comprehension of

a book that the teacher has read to them. This will also help them with
their writing skills because they will have to write down their answers.

Materials: Yellow pieces of paper labeled (the setting, characters,etc),

pad of paper and a pencil.

Procedures:

1. After the teacher will read a story to the students, the students
will do this activity
2. Each “brick” is labeled a different thing (You will start at the
setting)

4. When they get to one of the bricks the students will then have to

 Scrambled Sentences

Purpose: This activity is a way to help students with their sentence

structure. It will also help them with their punctuation.

Materials: Pieces of colored paper, with words and punctuation on

them.

Procedures:

1. There will be a bunch of colored paper with words/ punctuation

on it
2. The class will be divided into two groups
3. Each group will have the same words/punctuation

5. Each student will have to hold a piece of paper up with a word on
it and stand in the appropriate order that the sentence was read
6. The first team with the correct sentence (Wording and

Purpose: This activity is a way to help student’s analyze and seek

further into detail about a story.

Materials: Piece of paper and a marker.

Procedures:

1. After the teacher reads a story aloud to the students they will do

analysis the cause and affect of the story

2. The teacher will write on a pad of paper by the board and write in

marker what the students think

3. The class and the teacher will have a group discussion to fill it out

completely

Materials: A sheet that has: 3 Facts I learned, 2 Questions I still have

1. After the teacher reads a story aloud to the students or after they

have just studied a topic the students will fill this sheet out

2. The students will fill out 3 Facts they learned

3. Write down 2 Questions they still have

 Anchor Chart

Purpose: This activity is a way to help student’s with their writing

skills and possibly learn new vocabulary.

Materials: A big piece of paper divided into four. In the middle will be

the topic. You will also need markers.

Procedures:

1. The students will have a topic in the middle of the paper

2. It will be divided into 4 (The sections will be labeled: Is, Does,

Says and Is Not)

3. With the help from their teacher if necessary the students will

have to fill out the four squares to fit the topic given to them
