Common Core Lesson Planner

This 1st grade lesson focuses on writing about families. Students will create a family book by drawing pictures of their family members and labeling them. They will also draw their family celebrating an event. The objective is for students to describe what they know about their own families. Assessments include checking students' use of complete sentences in their writing and making sure they describe each family member's role. The introduction will connect to students' prior knowledge of families by having them discuss what family means to them.

8 Describe how you will adapt your lesson for the following learners:
Differentiated
 English Learners
Instruction
For my English Learners I would use my Bilingualism to communicate with them in areas that
perhaps they do not understand. I would try to keep a balance between English and Spanish
with them. I would provide them with Bilingual books that would aid them in adapting and
learning a new language.
 Special Needs
I would keep my eye alert for those students that might need extra help. I would help them by
meeting individually or in a group to reinforce concepts, content and ideas. In meetings I
would go over reading and writing with them.
 Accelerated (Gifted/Talented)
For my accelerated learners I would provide them with more advanced work/ worksheets,
reading material, writing projects, and I would also motivate these students in teaching other
students having a difficult time.

9 Describe at least TWO different types of formal or informal assessments you will use during your
Assessments lesson to check for student learning:
- I would walk around my students as they write about their family member, making sure
that they use complete sentences.

- I would also make sure that my students write how each family member has an important
role in the family. Reminding them that no two family members are alike.

10 Prior Knowledge, Context, and Motivation (How will you connect the beginning of the lesson
Lesson to what students already know and/or motivate them to learn about the topic?)
Delivery
My introduction will be important in getting my students attention and keeping them interested
throughout the lesson. The day before I would instruct students to bring pictures from home that
they can paste into a book that they will make. I would explain to students that we will be learning
and discussing families. During the day of the lesson, I would discuss with my students what
family means to them. Potential discussion questions might include:
*how are families a system that works together?
*how are families the same and how are they different?
*what do families around the world look like?
Describe each step of the lesson
