Wireless USB

This document provides an overview of wireless USB (WUSB) technology. It begins with acknowledging those who supported the project. The outline lists topics to be covered, including an overview of wired USB, reasons for wireless USB, features of WUSB, how it works, its design, issues/limitations, and future/conclusion. It then discusses wired USB in more detail, including its overview as an industry standard, data rates, and physical connection. It explains reasons for wireless USB such as wires being restrictive and limitations of other wireless solutions. It provides an overview of WUSB including its basis in ultra-wideband RF technology and vision. It describes WUSB design aspects such as speeds, hub-and-spoke model

WIRED USB
OVERVIEW
UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS (USB) Is an industry standard developed in the mid-1990s that defines the cables, connectors and communications protocols used in a bus for connection, communication and power supply between computers and electronic devices plug- play standard for peripheral devices standardized by the usb implementors forum host/slave connection

DATA RATES
LOW SPEED (1.5 Mbps . KEYBOARDS , MICE ETC) FULL SPEED ( 12 Mbps . USB 1.1 MAX SPEED) HIGH SPEED ( 480 Mbps .USB 2.0 MAX SPEED) SUPER SPEED (4.8Gbps , USB 3.0 )

PHYSICAL CONNECTION
FOUR WIRE CONNECTION TWO WIRES FOR POWER (+5 V , GND) TWO WIRES FOR SYNCHRONOUS SERIAL DATA COMPUTER SUPPLIES POWER (500 mA)

REASONS FOR WIRELESS USB

WIRED ISSUES
WIRES ARE RESTRICTIVE MULTIPLE WIRES ARE A HASSLE

CURRENT WIRELESS SOLUTIONS INADEQUATE

BLUETOOTH
BANDWIDTH OF 3Mbps NOT SUFFICIENT FOR HIGHER DEMAND APPLICATIONS ( VIDEO, HDTV,SCANNER ETC)

WIFI
EXPENSIVE EXCESSIVE POWER USAGE.

WIRELESS USB OVERVIEW

BASED ON ULTRA-WIDEBAND RF TECHNOLOGY

UWB IS A TECHNOLOGY FOR TRANSMITTING DATA OVER A LARGE BANDWIDTH (3.1 TO 10.6 GHz)
RESEARCH BEGAN IN FEBRUARY 2004, INVOLVED Alereon, Belkin International, D-Link, Fujitsu, Gemtek Technology, Hewlett-Packard, Icron Technologies, Intel,Lenovo, LSI Corp., Realtek Semiconductor,Samsung, Staccato Communication s,Synopsys, and Wisair, ETC COMPANIES WIRELESS VERSION OF USB, SAME FEATURES,SPEEDS LOW POWER REQUIRED, INEXPENSIVE, SMALL PHYSICAL IMPLEMENTATION NEXT GEN WIRELESS PERSONAL AREA NETWORK (WPAN)

WIRELESS USB VISION

WUSB DESIGN
Wireless USB is based on the WiMedia Alliance's UltraWideBand common radio platform and can send 480 Mbit/s at distances up to 3 meters and 110 Mbit/s at up to 10 meters using OFDM technology. Wireless USB connects USB devices with the USB host using a 'hub and spoke' model. The Wireless USB host is the 'hub' at the center, and each device sits at the end of a 'spoke'.

A USB system can be described by three definitional areas:

USB interconnect USB devices USB host

SECURITY AND ERROR HANDLING: Hardware error handling includes reporting and retry of failed transfers. The security mechanisms are based on AES 128/CCM encryption

POWER consumes very low power

Power is limited due to usage of wide spectrum Low power for mobile devices and minimum interference Max output to -41.3 dBm/MHz

WUSB

PACKET FRAME FORMAT

ISSUES /LIMITATIONS
Interference Issues
Potential conflict to devices on same frequencies Detect and Avoid
Wisairs solution to detect other frequencies Switches to frequencies not being used

Conflict issues are more of a concern for wireless USB devices being overpowered
