Green Building & Green Building Index: Master of Science (Construction Management)

The document discusses green building and the Green Building Index (GBI) in Malaysia. It defines green building as a process that minimizes resource use and environmental impact while improving occupant health. The GBI was launched in 2009 and evaluates buildings based on six criteria: energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, sustainable site planning/management, materials/resources, water efficiency, and innovation. Buildings can be certified at design and operational stages to promote sustainability in the built environment.

INTRODUCTION

Green Building
Sustainability in the context of the property and construction
industry is realised through green building design,
construction/refurbishment and operation.
WHAT IS GREEN BUILDING
Defined as a process that creates buildings and
supporting infrasturture that:
 Minimizes the use of resources
 Reduces harmful effects on the environment
 Provide helathier environments for people
(Karlenzig 2005).
GREEN BUILDING
A Green building focuses on increasing the
efficiency of resource use
 Energy
 Water
 Materials

Green Buildings should be designed and operated to

reduce the overall impact of the build environment
on its surroundings.
HOW DO WE GO ABOUT ACHIEVING A
GREEN BUILDING?

A Green or Sustainable building is designed:

To save energy and resources, recycle materials and
minimise the emission of toxic substances
throughout its life cycle
To harmonise with the local climate, traditions,
culture and the surrounding environment and
To be able to sustain and improve the quality of
human life while maintaining the capacity of the
ecosystem at the local and global levels
Make efficient use of resource have significant
operational savings and increases workplace
GREEN BUILDING INDEX(GBI)
GBI Malaysia will be launched in April 2009
 Pertubuhan Architect Malaysia (PAM)
 Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia (ACEM)
Launched by the Minister of Works Datuk Shaziman

May 21, 2009
To promote sustainability in the built environment
and raise awareness among Developer Architects,
Engineers, Planners, Designers, Contractor and
Public about environment issues.
WHO CAN USE THE GREEN BUILDING INDEX

GSB encourages all members of Project Teams, Building owners,

Developers and other interested parties (including Contractors,
Government and Design & Build Contractors) to use the Green
Building Index to validate environmental initiatives at the design
phase of new construction or base building refurbishment; or
construction and procurement phase of buildings.

Use of the Green Building Index is encouraged on all such projects to

assess and improve their environmental attributes.

Use of the Green Building Index tool without formal certification by an

independent accredited GBI Certifier does not entitle the user or any
other party to promote the Green Building Index rating achieved.

No fee is payable to GSB for such use, however formal recognition of

the Green Building Index rating - and the right to promote same -
requires undertaking the formal certification process offered by
Greenbuildingindex Sdn Bhd.
GBI MALAYSIA CRITERIA
Provide comprehensive framework to evaluate that
environmental impact and performance of buildings.
GBI Malaysia rating based on 6 key criteria:
1) Energy effiency
2) Indoor Environmental Quality
3) Sustainable Site Planning and Management
4) Material and resources
5) Water Efficiency

GBI MALAYSIA CERTIFICATION AWARDS

The assessment process involve an assessment at

design stage leading to the award of the provisional
GBI Malaysia rating.
Final award is given one year after the buildings is
first occupied.Buildings will also have to be re-
assessed every three years in order to maintain their
GBI Malaysia rating to ensure that buildings are well-
maintained.
