Summary
In “The Medicine Bag” by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, Martin’s Lakota grandfather
comes to live with his family. Martin is worried that, in person, his grandfather will not
impress his friends as much as the stories he’s told about him. He also doesn’t feel
ready for his grandfather to pass down a family tradition to him. But both his friends
and his grandfather see more nuance than he expects.
Insight “The Medicine Bag” is a thoughtful, humane story about cultural understanding.
Martin’s friends are impressed by his grandfather even though he doesn’t look like TV
images of Native Americans. His grandfather understands that it wouldn’t be
appropriate for Martin to wear the medicine bag everywhere. Indeed, the quest story his
grandfather tells involves bringing Western things, symbolized by the piece of the iron
pot, into Lakota tradition.
