GRN RULE 08 OF SAFETY

Is an operation concerned with
the lifting and lowering of a load.
A load is the item or items being lifted which
could include a person or persons. A lifting
operation may be performed manually or
using lifting equipment.

Main requirements for a lifting operation

To ensure a hazard free condition during lifting and rigging some


criteria need to be taken into consideration:

• Lifting Plan if required


• Risk Assessment and (PTW)
 The object being lifted
 The weather conditions
 The surroundings
• Valid certificates of lifting equipment and accessories
• Competent personnel

Before the job:
Use an authorised lifting plan.
Inspect slings, cables and any other lifting and anchoring equipment. Reject
any equipment that is not in good condition.
Verify that the load does not exceed the maximum permitted capacity for
the lifting equipment and that it does not contain anything that could
come loose and fall during manoeuvres.
Protect and place signs for the areas that will be affected and never enter
or allow others to enter these areas.

While working:
Minimise the number of people at the job site and do not stand below the
suspended load or allow others to do so.*
Use cables/ropes to guide the load and never touch it with your hands
while it is suspended.*
Main requirements for lifting operation

The Weather Conditions:


Never carry out any rigging or hoisting
operation when the weather conditions present a
threat to personnel, property or the public.

The Surroundings :

 The employee must identify the proximity hazards


 A safe distance for working around energized
conductors must be maintained during working.

Lifting Procedures:

 Always follow the correct lifting procedures in the manual


 Never use kinked or damaged slings or hoist wire ropes.
 Before any lift check to see the sling is properly attached to the
load
 Use tag lines when necessary

The Operator
 make sure lifting operations are planned and
supervised
 The operator should be qualified.
 know the risks
 know the equipment and their safe usage

Sign Language:

 Only the banksman who authorized to give signal


to the crane operator using the international signals

 During the lifting operations, workers should always


maintain eye contact with each other plus keep attention
on the object being lifted.
