Lesson 1: Distinction Between the
State and the Nation as a Political
Concept
STATE
- Community of persons, more or
less numerous, permanently
occupying a definite portion of
territory.
FOUR ELEMENTS
1.People
- Refers to the inhabitants or
population of a particular territory.
- Population must be sufficient
- People make up the state are
usually called as the nation or
nations.
2. TERRITORY
- Definite portion of the surface of
the earth which is the subject of
the jurisdiction and sovereign
rights of the state.
Territorial Domains are:
a.Terrestrial ( land )
b. Fluvial ( water )
c. aerial ( water )
3. Sovereignty
- Supreme power to command and
enforce obedience
- Two aspects of sovereignty
a. Internal sovereignty is the supreme or
absolute power of a state to enforce
its will on the people within its territory
b. external sovereignty refers to the
independence of a state from control
by any other state.
4. Government
- Institution or aggregate of institutions
by which an independent society
makes and carries out those rules
of action necessary to enable men to
live in a social state
THEORIES ON THE ORIGIN OF
THE STATE
1.Divine Right Theory
-holds that the origin of the state is of
divine creation and the ruler is
ordained by God to govern the
people
2. Necessity and Force Theory
- State must have been created as
product of existence of the strong
and the weak in society.
3. Patriarchal Theory
- Attributes the origin of the states to
the enlargement of the family which
remained under the authority of the
father or mother
4. Social Contract Theory
- Early states must have been
formed by deliberate and voluntary
agreement among people
5. Instinctive Theory
- State is founded out of man’s
natural instinct for association
6. Economic Theory
- Believes that the state must have
been founded to take charge of
man’s various needs
7. Historical Theory
- State is product of human
development
State Distinguished from Nation
1.State is a political concept, while
nation is an ethnic or racial concept
2. State is subject to external control
while a nation may or may not be
independent of external control.
3. State cannot become a state
without a nation or nations that
consists its people
4. Single state may consist of one or
more nations or peoples and
conversely, a single nation may be
made up of different states.
Lesson 2: Globalization as a Context
of Relations among Nation-States
GLOBALIZATION
- Process of interaction and
integration among the people,
companies, and governments of
different nations
- A process driven by international
trade and investment and aided by
information technology.
- Technology has been the other
principal driver of globalization.
- Advances in information
technology, in particular, have
dramatically transformed economic
life.
- Generally recognized as the
gradual or complete disappearance
of economic, social and cultural
borders between nation-states.
- Globalization is a force that
changed the way nation-states deal
with one another, international
commerce.
- Also creates a sense of
interdependence among nations.
