Coreg is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. It may also be used after a heart attack to improve your chances of survival if your heart is not pumping well. Carvedilol is the active ingredient in this medication. It belongs to a class of drugs known as alpha-/beta-blockers. This medication works by blocking the action of certain natural substances in your body on the heart and blood vessels. This helps to lower your heart rate and blood pressure and relieve strain on your heart.
This medication comes in the form of an oral tablet that should be taken with food. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. Do not use more or less of this medication than prescribed by your doctor.
If you are using this medication to treat high blood pressure, it may take one to two weeks to get the full benefit of this drug. It is important to continue using this medication even if you are feeling well. Patients with high blood pressure usually do not feel sick but are still at risk. Before you take Coreg, talk with your doctor about all of your medical conditions and drugs you take, including Rx, OTC, vitamins, and supplements. This information will help the doctor decide if Coreg is appropriate for you.
The use of Coreg may result in side effects. The most common side effects are dizziness, tiredness, low blood pressure, diarrhea, high blood sugar, weakness, slow heart rate, and weight gain. Contact your doctor if you experience any of these effects, or others that concern you. Do not drive until you know how Coreg affects you.
Getting up slowly when rising from a lying or sitting position can help to reduce the risk of dizziness. You are more likely to experience dizziness within one hour after using this medication. Taking this drug with food or starting with a low dose can help to reduce dizziness.
Serious allergic reactions are rare. If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, shortness of breath, or swelling around the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help immediately.
Speak with your doctor or healthcare professional for full medical advice and additional information on the risks and benefits involved with using Coreg as this is not a complete list of side effects.
