Estring is a brand-name drug and there is currently no available generic version.
Estring is an FDA-approved vaginal ring containing estradiol, which is a form of estrogen. It is inserted into the vagina to treat symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy caused by menopause. These symptoms include dryness, burning, and irritation of the vagina. Estring is also used to treat urinary symptoms of menopause, such as painful and frequent urination. The Estring vaginal ring works by releasing a steady stream of estrogen directly to the vaginal tissues where it’s absorbed.
Estring should be applied with clean, dry hands high into the vagina. If it is applied correctly, you should not feel it and it should not affect your day-to-day or sex life. If you do feel the ring, you can gently push it higher. If your Estring starts to fall out, because of a strained bowel movement or other reason, it can be rinsed with warm water and then reinserted into the vagina.
The ring should remain in the vagina for 90 days, or 3 months, according to your healthcare provider’s instructions. After the 90 days are up, you can remove your Estring by hooking your finger in it and gently pulling it out. You should call your healthcare provider immediately if you have difficulty removing Estring. Your used Estring should be disposed of in the trash; it should not be flushed down the toilet.
Estring is not recommended for longer than 90 days. Consult your doctor or healthcare provider for medical advice regarding the proper use of Estring.
Common side effects of Estring include back pain, headache, nausea, and weight changes. Other possible side effects include changes in vaginal discharge, urinary tract infections, upper respiratory tract infections, and breast pain or tenderness. Consult your healthcare provider about other possible side effects associated with Estring.
Estrogen therapy can increase the risk of endometrial and breast cancer in certain women. Estrogen may also increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and blood clots, especially in women with a history of cardiovascular disorders and blood clots. In women aged 65 years or older, estrogen may cause an increased risk of dementia. Consult your healthcare provider for a complete overview of warnings and precautions associated with Estring.
