Kritters (クリッター, Kritter) are crocodile enemies from the Donkey Kong franchise.
Origin[edit]
Kritters first appear in Donkey Kong Country as the basic foot soldiers of the Kremling Krew, led by King K. Rool. They are the most foundational type of Kremling, even serving as the species' namesake in two Paon DP-developed titles: DK: King of Swing and its sequel, DK: Jungle Climber. They appear in several color variations, each differing slightly in behavior. Standard green Kritters simply walk in a straight line, while blue Kritters follow the same path but hop continuously rather than walking. The rarer yellow, brown, and gray varieties each feature distinct jumping patterns. Like most enemies, Kritters damage Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong on contact, but they can be defeated with any standard attack—including a jump, a roll, or a thrown Barrel. Because of their simplicity and vulnerability, Kritters, particularly the green variety, are often considered one of the Donkey Kong series' equivalent to the Mario franchise's Goombas as core villain iconography, alongside the less recurring but also famous inanimate barrels, Tiki Buzzes, and Gnawties.
Although the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance remakes of Donkey Kong Country altered Kritter colors and their respective behaviors, green was already established as their standard color. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest introduced a green variant named Klomp, which behaves like a green Kritter but walks more slowly due to a peg leg. Diddy Kong Racing also featured a green Kritter named Krunch as a playable racer - originally designed as a generic crocodile named Krash but reassigned to a Kritter after Diddy Kong was added to the game. Green Kritters made their second standard enemy appearance in Donkey Kong 64 (though their behavior was also used by Kritters in Donkey Kong Land for the monochromatic Game Boy system), marking their final appearance before Donkey Kong Country was remade for the Game Boy Color. Donkey Kong Bananza reintroduces Kritters alongside the rest of the Kremlings in the latter half of its runtime, after King K. Rool is freed from the Planet Core.
After Rare was acquired by Microsoft in September 2002, Kritters began branching out into a variety of new roles. This shift started with Mario Power Tennis—their first appearance in the Mario universe—where green, blue, and red Kritters appear as background spectators on the DK Jungle Court. Due to this purely background role, Mario Power Tennis was the first game where color variations carried no functional differences, unlike in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and subsequent titles. In DK: King of Swing, Kritters are enemies, but one is a playable character in Jungle Jam mode. Kritters were subsequently featured as goalkeepers in Super Mario Strikers and Mario Strikers Charged, outfitted in red jerseys with a skull-and-crossbones emblem alongside matching gloves and shoulder pads. In Mario Super Sluggers, Kritters are playable characters, offering blue, brown, and red alternate colors alongside the standard green. Kritters have not appeared in the Mario universe since, with Mario Strikers: Battle League replacing them with the similarly long-armed Boom Boom.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]
Kritter appears in Brawl as two trophies and two stickers.
Trophies[edit]
- Kritter
A member of the Kremlings. Led by King K. Rool, Kritters are the grunts of the army. They appear frequently in Donkey Kong Country in green, purple, blue, and other color variations--the blue ones will jump after Donkey Kong. Kritters also appear in Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast, pounding those barrels in pursuit of Donkey Kong.

- Kritter (Goalie)
- An underling of King K. Rool and the one and only goalie of Super Mario Strikers. In other words, it doesn't matter what team you play as--your goalie is going to be Kritter. Despite being at the very bottom of the Kremling ranks, he's responsible for what many might consider to be the toughest AND most important field position.

In Smash Run[edit]
Green and blue Kritters appear as enemies. Both types walk around and turn at ledges, but will attack differently if they spot a player:
- Green Kritters bite three times, and are able to turn around between each one.
- Blue Kritters attack by spinning their claws around in a multi-hit tackle. They can also use the move while jumping.
The easy variant of the Defeat Them All! challenge contains two Kritters alongside other enemies. Both Kritter types are also part of the enemy waves in the generic version of the Vs. Enemy Team final battle.
Trophy[edit]
The Kritter trophy appears in both versions of the game. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Kritter's trophy is unlocked by clearing a 3-Minute Smash after getting at least 120 KOs.
- Kritter
Kritters are King K. Rool's minions from the Donkey Kong series, and they come in both green and blue varieties. Green ones will try to bite you repeatedly, and their last bite hurts the most! Blue ones will swipe at you with their sharp claws. Neither really knocks you back, so it's easy to get hit several times by them.
These enemies are part of King K. Rool's Kremling gang in the Donkey Kong series. Depending on their color, they move and attack in different ways. Unfortunately for them, Donkey Kong tends to take them out before they even know what's going on. On a separate note, you can actually play as a Kritter in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast!

The green ones attack with their strong jaws, while the blue use their sharp claws in spinning attacks for powerful slashing. They don't have a lot of launching power, but their relentless assaults can easily wear you down.

Spirit[edit]
Kritter appears as a Novice-class primary spirit. In Adventure Mode: World of Light, Kritter is one of countless spirits captured by Galeem during his takeover of the universe. Its spirit is located in the DK Island sub-area of The Light Realm, right where Ropey Rampage is in the original Donkey Kong Country.
Kritter's Spirit Battle uses a blue King K. Rool puppet fighter and is fought on Kongo Jungle. King K. Rool has increased defense and starts with a Rocket Belt, referencing the rocket-powered bongos Kritter uses in its spirit artwork.
