Kagaribi 12 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor held in Tokorozawa, Saitama, Kantō from May 5th-6th, 2024, as the last and largest of three major/supermajor events of the 2024 Golden Week. At 2,030 entrants for singles, it was also the largest Smash event in Japan, the ninth-largest Smash event of all-time, and the first Smash tournament outside of the United States to surpass 2,000 entrants.
Tournament summary[edit]
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
Alongside being the largest Japanese Smash event up to that point, Kagaribi 12 featured many of Japan's best players, with, only 7 of the top 50 best players in Japan in 2023 not in attendance (those being ProtoBanham, Jagaimo, Atelier, HIKARU, Sigma, Senra and Showers). Kagaribi 12 also featured some of the best players from North America (notably Sparg0, MkLeo, Zomba, MKBigBoss, Maister, and Big D) as well as Glutonny from Europe and Kinaji from Oceania.
Many significant upsets happened in the early bracket. The first notable international player upset was #26 seed Big D, who was double-eliminated by #997 seed Ubuge 1-2 and 0-2 (upset factor 10) to place 257th, the lowest international placement of the tournament as well as Big D's lowest offline placement ever. Additionally, several top Japanese players were sent to losers very early: #83 seed Ezs notoriously lost to one of the English commentators of the tournament, #942 seed Sean from school 0-2 (upset factor 7), #46 seed Omuatsu lost to #302 seed Az 1-2 (upset factor 6), #37 seed Eim lost to #220 seed DenKOTA 0-2 (upset factor 5), and #30 seed Lv.1 lost to #227 seed No.8 1-2 (upset factor 6). Despite the upset, Lv.1 managed to make a 7 set losers run to place 25th, while Ezs finished at 193rd after losing to Omuatsu; Omuatsu himself was eliminated at 129th, losing to #135 seed Yoshiko 0-3 (upset factor 4), whilst Eim was eliminated at 97th, losing to #80 seed Nizemamo 0-3.
The two biggest upsets of the top 256 bracket were on #24 seed DIO, who lost to #105 seed Leaf 0-3 (upset factor 5) and #88 seed Kinaji 2-3 (upset factor 4), and #25 seed Umeki, who lost to #104 seed Navy 0-3 (upset factor 4) and #89 seed Eik 1-3. Both players finished at 97th, with this being Umeki's lowest ever offline placement and DIO's second-lowest. Meanwhile, #57 seed Huto lost to #72 seed Chicken 0-3 and #276 seed haruka. 2-3 (upset factor 5), and #42 seed Uame lost to #87 seed ElleGo 1-3 and #131 seed Nano 2-3 (upset factor 4) to place 129th.
The greatest upsets of the event took place in top 128 of the bracket. #4 seed Zomba lost to #68 seed Lax 2-3 (upset factor 9), #8 seed Yoshidora lost to #72 seed Chicken 0-3 (upset factor 7), #7 seed Shuton lost to #26 seed TamaPDaifuku 0-3 (upset factor 4). Also, after upsetting Uame, Nano eliminated #22 seed Jogibu at 65th (upset factor 6). In top 64, Yoshidora was eliminated at 49th after losing to #92 seed Kuroponzu 1-3 (upset factor 7), his worst placement since Kagaribi 6. Finally, #2 seed Sparg0, who after underperforming at the previous golden week event, lost to #31 seed Toriguri 2-3 (upset factor 8) and #44 seed Noi 2-3 in a reverse 3-0 (upset factor 9) to place 33rd, his worst tournament result since Super Smash Con 2023. As such, half of the top 8 seeds were either in losers bracket or eliminated before top 64.
After top 64, upsets decreased in numbers, but all remaining international players were eliminated. #14 MkLeo lost in winners to #19 Snow (which include two reverse 3-stock by Snow) 1-3 and in losers to #41 Yamanaction (UF 3) 1-3, eliminated at 25th. Zomba was eliminated in Shuton loser's run 2-3 for 25th and #10 Maister, placing 13th, is the highest placed North American player of the tournament, being beaten by TamaPDaifuku 2-3 (UF 3) and #17 Doramigi 2-3. 4 other international players matched or outplaced their seed. #33 MKBigBoss lost to Acola and Lv.1 for 33rd, #35 BassMage lost to Miya and Yamanaction for 33rd, all in 1-3, #62 Goblin lost to Miya 1-3 and Chicken 0-3 for 25th and #50 Jahzz0 lost to Raru 0-3 and Kaninabe 2-3 for 25th. Lastly, #6 Glutonny was eliminated at 9th as the highest placing international player, being send to losers by #11 Asimo 3-0 and losing the loser's top 8 qualifier to #9 KEN 2-3.
Outside of KEN, the other players to enter top 8 through loser's side are Shuton (after a long loser's run defeating Gackt, Zomba, Navy, Yaura and Asimo), #12 Tea (beating Sssr, Kaninabe, Akakikusu and Raru) and #13 Zackray (beating Shirayuki, M0tsunabE, Akakikusu and Doramigi). On the other side, #1 Acola reached winner's semi-finals rather easily (but going game 5 against Pit main Midorun and Yaura), similar to #3 Miya, #5 Hurt and TamaPDaifuku, having all dropped only 3 games. As such, only half of the top 8 seeds made into the top 8.
Despite not entering top 8, both Akakikusu, Doramigi and Carmelo greatly outplaced their seed. #17 Doramigi finished 9th, beating not only Maister but also Taikei, Neo, Lv.1 and Toriguri, while #29 Akakikusu beat Rizeasu, Lax and Yamanaction en route to a 13th place finish. Lastly, #49 Carmelo placed 17th with wins over Nizemamo, Taikei, Alice and Takera.
In top 8, both winners semi-finals (Acola vs Hurt and Miya and TamaPDaifuku) went to game 5, but Miya and Hurt came victorious, with Hurt's victory being a upset factor 4. Hurt became the first player not named Miya to defeat Acola since Sonix and Sparg0 at Watch The Throne in December 2023. In loser's, KEN was swiftly 3-0'd by Zackray's Pit, whereas Tea and Shuton went to game 5, with Tea finally winning. Dropping to the loser's, Acola defeats Tea 3-1, Zackray 3-0 (who had ended TamaP's run at 5th) before losing the runback against Hurt in Losers Finals. Hurt was posed to reset the bracket by going up 0-2 on Miya in Grand Finals, with a full stock advantage at one point in the third game; however, a 6 to 9 Judge combo that KOed Hurt at 11% reversed Miya's fortunes, who preceded to reverse 3-0 Hurt to win his second P-tier of the year.
Notably, not a single international player placed top 8, with Glutonny placing the highest at 9th, further cementing the strength of the Japanese scene compared to the rest of the world. Following the event, several North American Smashers, such as Dabuz and the members of the Lights Out podcast,[1][2] discussed the reasons for the NA scene's decline.
