Fishtail Updo Hairstyle For Parties, Prom, Wedding | Fancy Hair Tutorial

Today's hairstyle tutorial is a beautiful updo style created using a simple fishtail braid!

Fishtail updo hairstyle tutorial

Our step by step video instructions (below) show how to make a simplified french fishtail braid, transitioning into a standard fishtail, then wrapping and tucking the finished braid into a pretty updo hairstyle. This formal hairstyle is quite easy even though it doesn't look like it would be!

This hairstyle would be great for many special occasions: The Prom, Homecoming, weddings (hairstyles for the bride and bridesmaids as well as guests) parties, dinners, church, etc.

As mentioned in our video, the braid can also be left down for another adorable look!

Tips and tricks:
  • Use hair product to help prevent flyaways while you are creating the fishtail and for the finishing touches.
  • Stretch the edges of your braid for a more voluminous final look.
  • Miniature bobby pins (affiliate) are easier to hide in styles like this.
  • You may want to loosen the hair at the crown of her head before you wrap up the braid for a softer and more effortless look.

Prom Hair Tutorial, Dress and Shoes!

Gorgeous prom updo hairstyle tutorial and prom dress.

GRWM Prom! Come join us as she gets ready for her first Prom.

Hey guys! A few weeks ago my daughter went to the Prom at her High School. We filmed as she got her Prom hairstyle done, showing step by step how to recreate it in a tutorial for you. She chose to wear a pretty updo with braids and twists and a sparkly headband as an accessory.

Easy Prom Hairstyle Tutorial:

(Click here to watch the tutorial directly on YouTube.)

This updo is great for long hair, but would also work for shorter hair.  The buns could be easily adjusted for the length of hair you are working with.  We love this updo because it looks fancy and gorgeous but is fairly quick and easy, and requires no heat or pre curling of her hair (except for the optional pieces we left out framing her face.)

She went with a natural makeup look (which her aunt helped her with) a statement necklace, and minimal earrings.  As you can see in our video, her dress was a modest vintage style and very princess like!  We made a video a few weeks ago showing how to lace up this dress, which is a lovely corset back.

The dress was long enough that no one could see her shoes anyway, so she decided to go with the trend of Converse comfort!  Best decision ever for the dance and for fun.

Hope you enjoyed a peek at her first Jr Prom!

Braided Bow Fan Bun - Easy Messy Bun Tutorial

Braided bow fan bun video tutorial

This easy bun is so simple and quick to make, you'll love it! A dutch braid, combined with a popular fan messy bun technique gives this standard rolled double bun a fun bow look!

This cute hairstyle could be worn for casual occasions, or for more formal events.  It would be great for cheer leading, dance, gymnastics, soccer, track, etc.

Braided Bow Fan Bun Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

My daughter often wears this tucked bun (without the braid) as a quick hairstyle for school. It is a great option for second day hair, or hair that isn't looking so great and is perfect for putting your hair up quickly for after school sports.  But recently she was wearing a dutch braid (as shown at the first of our tutorial) with her hair down. When she pulled her hair up into her "go to" bun after school, this cute style was created.  We both noticed the top of the bun looked adorably like a bow with the braid in the center!

Quick and easy braided bow fan bun video tutorial

Easy messy bun tutorial. Braided bow fan bun

If french braiding or dutch braiding isn't your thing, or you don't have time for that... You could start with a standard ponytail and add a regular 3 strand braid accent before making the bun for a similar look. And, as mentioned in our video, you could place the braid so that it shows in the bottom layer of this bun as well for a double braid look. This bun can be made to look sleek and smooth or more rough and messy, depending on your event and preference.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 1 medium size ponytail holder or hair tie (similar to your hair color would be best.)
  • 1 small hair elastic for the bottom of the braid.
  • Bobby pins (optional.)
  • Finishing hairspray (optional.)

Testing The Faux Hawk Kit! Is It Actually Quick And Easy?

Faux Hawk Kit Review and First Impression Video #fauxhawk #hairstyle

We recently purchased this "FauxHawk Kit" made by Goody and wanted to give it a try, so we decided to do a tutorial and review/first impression for you. My daughter has worn a faux hawk hairstyle quite often in the past as her dance team used to use it as their competition hairstyle.  She also will occasionally wear the style to school or church.  But, as much as we love the edgy yet glamorous look, the traditional way to make a faux hawk hairstyle (using messy buns) can be quite time consuming.  And on school mornings, we are all about quick! We wanted to see if this tool actually would make the process faster and easier with the same cute result!

Faux Hawk Kit Review, Tutorial, and First Impression Video: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

This kit comes in several different colors.  I would recommend looking for the one that matches your hair the closest.  We found ours at Walmart and I'm guessing it can be found in most discount and drug stores for around $5.

Easy way to create a braided #fauxhawk #updo

This hairstyle would be great for all ages... teens, little girls, and moms. I could see this working for casual as well as formal occasions. This style could even work for Prom, Homecoming, church, recitals, weddings, etc.

Quick and easy faux hawk kit. #dancehairstyle #fauxhawk

You can choose to leave this the braided faux hawk sleek and neat looking, or stretch it out and deconstruct it a bit more for a messy and voluminous look. You might notice in our photos (above and below) that one side is messier than the other (below.)  We purposely deconstructed one side after the tutorial to see if the messy look was possible with this tool and it is... it just takes some work to mess the braid up a little more.

Quick and easy faux hawk kit tutorial. #goody #hairhack

After looking over the instructions for a second time, I'm pretty sure a hair elastic was not meant to be used at the top of the ponytail before placing the tool in her hair (as we demonstrated in our video.) But, we found that this "misunderstood hair tie" actually helped to hold the hairstyle in place very securely in her fine and slippery hair.  We tried the style again without the elastic and it did not hold well at all. If you have textured or thick hair, the tool will probably work just fine without adding a hair tie.

This tool will work best with at least medium length or long hair. I think it would look adorable with curly or wavy hair as well as straight.

If you are wanting to make a faux hawk the traditional way, we do have a few tutorials on our blog showing how to do that:

Prom & Wedding Hairstyle! Romantic Updo With Twists & Braids

Romantic updo with twists and braids hair tutorial.

In today's hair tutorial we show an easy, elegant, and pretty updo for special occasions. This romantic hairstyle with twists and braids is glamorous, sophisticated, and fancy. Similar to something you might see on the red carpet, but can be created quite easily in your own home! This gorgeous style would be great for many occasions such as Prom, Homecoming, Weddings (bridal, bridesmaids, and flower girls) recitals, communions, holidays, date night, Instagram photos, etc.

Romantic Updo With Twists and Braids Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

In our step by step video tutorial (above) we use a topsy tail to create the first twisted section. These tools can be found online (affiliate.) This tool is optional, if you do not have a topsy tail, the twists can be made by pulling the hair through with just your fingers. As mentioned in our video, there really is no exact science for creating this hairstyle. After making the basic twists and braids, you can use your own creativity to loosen, pull, and pin up the final look and much of this will depend on the length and texture of the hair you are working with.

This up-style will work best on long hair and medium hair. Curly, wavy, or straight.

Gorgeous wedding hairstyle tutorial.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • Several small/medium clear hair elastics. (We used 5.)
  • Bobby pins. Our favorite brand and best we have found for holding the hair in place is Sally Beauty Supply min pins (affiliate.)
  • Topsy Tail (affiliate) (optional.)
  • Finishing hairspray.
  • Flat iron, curling wand, or curling iron for face framing curls.

Tinker Bell Hair Tutorial

Tinkerbell hair tutorial

This Tinkerbell hair tutorial is inspired by the hairstyle worn on Disney's fairy Tinker Bell in the movie Peter Pan! A cute messy bun or "top knot" wrapped with ribbon and side swept bangs.  Of course, my daughter doesn't have bangs (as I'm sure many of you don't as well) so we made some "fake bangs" using her own hair!

Tinker Bell Hairstyle, Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We have always loved Disney hairstyles and Halloween hairstyles and could not wait to film this hair tutorial! We have loved watching Disney movies and think Tinker Bell would be such a fun character to dress up as for Halloween, or for your next trip to Disneyland, Disneyworld, or Disney birthday party. This hairstyle would look great with a Tinker Bell fairy costume!

Tinker bell hairstyle tutorial, how to make faux bangs

The method we used for creating the "faux fringe" or bangs could be used for every day hairstyles as well (this doesn't have to be just for Tinkerbell!)  It might be fun to change up your look and have bangs for the day.  I have seen this method used with a thick headband placed in front of the bun, which ends up making the bangs look really authentic and more natural!

Supplies we used to create this look:
  • 1 Hair tie
  •  Several bobby pins
  •  Flat Iron (affiliate)

Easy Halo or Crown Braid Tutorial

Easy halo braid or crown braid hair tutorial. Video instructions.
In today's hair tutorial we show how to make a crown braid, halo braid, or "Heidi braids" using a super easy method or hair hack.  If you can make a regular french braid, you can do this!

We love the look of a classic halo braid but know it can be a struggle to try and french braid in a circular shape around your head!  This method we are showing today is very easy (if you know how to french braid) and looks adorable besides.

Halo/Crown Braid Cheat, Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Depending on the length of hair you are working with, you could actually cross the braids at the base of her neck before pinning them to the top of her head, to form a full circle with the braids.  My daughter's hair isn't quite long enough for that at the moment, so technically the way we styled her hair in the video (above) could be considered "Heidi braids" or "milkmaid braids" instead of a full halo.

Cute "Heidi braids" hairstyle. Easy method.

We have done this style before starting with regular pigtails, which is another "cheat" or "hair hack" rather than having to french braid around your head.  That is a great method as well, but we love the double braided look this technique creates, and also think this style lays nicer and looks more authentic (since you are actually pulling in separate pieces while french braiding, instead of bringing the hair in all together with a pigtail.)

Step by step hair tutorial. How to make a crown braid or halo braid cheat.

As mentioned in our video, you can leave your braids tight, or stretch them out for 2 different looks.  Stretching the braids will give you a more relaxed, voluminous, slightly messy bohemian look and will also make it easier to tuck in the ends of the braids and hide your bobby pins.  Leaving the braids tight can be super cute as well though, especially for little girls.

Crown braid, top view.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 1 or 2 medium size hair elastics (depending on length of hair and how you decide to secure the ends of your braids.)
  • Several bobby pins.
  • Finishing hairspray.

This would be a cute hairstyle for school, work, church, dance, sports, special occasions, flower girls, weddings, dress up, holidays, the beach, etc.

Easy Twist Updo Hairstyle

Easy twist updo hairstyle, video tutorial.

This low side bun or chignon hairstyle would be perfect for those days when you need to look nice, but don't have a lot of time. You could wear this twisted updo for many occasions including: A prom hairstyle, homecoming, church, recitals, weddings (bridal hairstyle or guests) communions, holiday gatherings, etc.

This pretty updo is so easy it could be a DIY hairstyle!  Check out our simple step-by-step hair tutorial showing how to create an elegant low side bun below:

Easy Twist Updo Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Although this style can be made to look quite fancy, you could also wear this bun for casual or everyday occasions as well.  This updo can be made to look smooth and sleek, or more relaxed and tousled, depending on the look you are going for. You could add some texture above your ponytail before you make the bun and frame your face with some wispy pieces if you are wanting a more bohemian looking style. You could even pull the twists apart a little more to make an adorable messy bun.  Along with formal occasions, I could see this being a cute casual hairstyle for school, work, or even the beach.

Easy updo hairstyle! Hair tutorial showing step by step instructions.

Hairstyle for prom, homecoming, weddings. Easy video tutorial.

Supplies needed to recreate this updo hairstyle:
  • 1 medium size ponytail holder.  You will want to choose one that is stretchy, and strong.
  • Several bobby pins.
  • Hairspray, gel, wax, etc.

I love that this style can be created with just one hair tie and a few bobby pins, and it literally only takes a few minutes to do! This hairstyle will work best with medium or long hair and most hair textures.

Topsy Tail Bubble Faux Hawk Tutorial, Dance Hairstyles

Topsy Tail Faux Hawk Tutorial, Hairstyles for Dance.

We hope you love this easy bubble faux hawk!  This hairstyle would be great for dance, cheer leading, gymnastics, sports, figure skating, school, Prom, church, etc.

My daughter is on a dance team and wears a faux hawk hairstyle regularly to competitions, so we have tried several different ways of creating this edgy look.  If you are looking for more dance hairstyle ideas, we actually have a past tutorial showing how to create a "messy bun faux hawk" as well as a "braided faux hawk with cornrow accents."

We are loving this topsy tail method since it is easy and fairly quick!

Topsy Tail Faux Hawk Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Over the years we have seen several variations of this trendy faux hawk hairstyle made using a topsy tail and have been wanting to try it.  A few of the hairstylists we were inspired by for this tutorial are listed below:

Confessions of a Hairstylist

Two Little Girls Hairstyles
Annies Forget Me Knots

Edgy hairstyle for dance. Topsy tail faux haux video tutorial.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • Several medium size hair elastics (the amount will depend on how many bubbled sections you plan to make in your faux hawk.
  • If you plan on using this hairstyle for dancing, sports (or anything active) I would suggest adding bobby pins to each looped section to help keep the style secure.
  • Topsy Tail. If you are needing a topsy tail (as shown in our tutorial) they can be found on Amazon (affiliate.)
  • You may have noticed that I styled her hair while it was damp in this video to achieve a smooth and sleek look on the sides of the style.  Depending on the texture of hair you are working with, it may work out better for you to style the hair dry using hair product to smooth the sides.

Elegant Elastic Christmas Tree Hairstyle & Bun

Elegant Christmas Tree Hairstyle Tutorial

This week we are kicking off the holiday season with a festive Christmas tree hairstyle!  And, I think this might be our favorite Christmas hairstyle that we have done to date.  We love how easy and simple this pretty updo style is to create, yet it looks so unique, cute, sweet, and elegant.  This X-mas hairstyle would be perfect for many occasions this holiday season: Christmas parties, meeting Santa, holiday photos, Christmas dinner, Christmas morning, holiday parades, school, church, recitals, concerts, Christmas shopping, making holiday treats, decorating the Christmas tree, making gingerbread men, a winter dance or wedding, etc.

Christmas Tree Hairstyle & Bun Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

You can create any type of bun that you want at the top of the tree (a donut bun, sock bun, messy bun, braided bun, twisted bun, rolled bun, etc.)  We decided on a triple braided bun

Elastic Christmas Tree Hairstyle and Bun Video Tutorial

Of course, you can leave your tree "as is" or you can decorate it and make it more glamorous if you want.  A star or angel at the top would be beautiful, as well as ribbon, ornaments, glitter, gems, or even lights.

X-mas hairstyle! Christmas tree and bun tutorial.

Easy Christmas tree hairstyle tutorial.

You may remember a similar style we did on my little toddler niece several years ago as a "candy corn hairstyle" with the elastics on the side/top of her head going into a side ponytail. As mentioned in our video tutorial, this elastic tree positioned on the back of her head and bun combination is inspired by a "candy corn" hairstyle that has been trending on Instagram this Fall. The first thing I thought of when I saw this style was, not only is this adorable as a candy corn... but it would also make a fabulous Christmas tree! Many Instagramers have posted this candy corn hairstyle recently and I wanted to share a few awesome accounts that we saw it on: @pr3ttygirl79 @simplystranded @brownhairedbliss @twogirls_hairstyles @jespi09 @toddlerhairideas @prettyhstyle3029 @kares84 I know there are more and don't want to leave anyone out!  If you posted this style, feel free to leave your Instagram in the comments and we will check it out. :)

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • Several small, green elastics (the amount you will need will depend on the size of tree you make. We used 9 green and 1 yellow for the star at the top.) The brand we used is "goody ouchless."
  • 1 ponytail holder, large enough to contain all of your hair.
  • 1 medium size, clear elastic to hold the braids before you make the bun.
  • Several bobby pins.
  • Any optional accessories you want to decorate your tree with. (Decorative pins, gems, star clips, ornaments, ribbon, etc.

Topsy Tail Bun Tutorial

Easy and quick topsy tail bun tutorial. Only one elastic and no bobby pins!
A quick and easy bun, perfect for dance or ballet!

A few weeks ago we saw this simple and beautiful bun while scrolling through Instagram on an account called "brownhairedbliss." As soon as we saw this "flip through topsy tail" technique, we knew we wanted to try it.  My daughter is a dancer, so dance hairstyles and ballet buns are a huge part of our life. ;)  Sometimes it can be a struggle to put all of her long hair up, and we get tired of our usual bun makers, donut buns, and sock buns.  A standard or braided bun (wrapped around the top of the ponytail) always requires using tons of bobby pins and elastics and can be a pain to take out.  So, we were super excited to see that this bun is quick and easy, and that it only requires using one ponytail holder and zero bobby pins!

Topsy Tail Bun Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

P.S. Watch to the end of the video to see how to take this bun out and for some tips and tricks. The topsy tail we used can be found on Amazon (affiliate) and in some stores.  The brand we use is "Conair."

Simple bun tutorial. Flip through topsy tail technique.

Quick and easy bun for ballet and dance. Topsy tail bun using no bobby pins.

She tested this bun one afternoon while doing all sorts of trampoline tricks, and it held up and stayed in extremely well (which is quite amazing considering it is only being held together with one hair tie.)

Of course, this bun isn't only for dancers.  This updo hairstyle could be worn for many casual occasions such as school, for sports, for cheer leading, gymnastics, to work, to the beach, etc.  This could also be worn for more formal occasions; church, weddings, prom, homecoming, communions, recitals, flower girls, etc.

Supplies needed to recreate this bun:
  • 1 hair tie, elastic, or ponytail holder. (You will want something sturdy that can handle all of your hair in a ponytail.)
  • Topsy tail tool. (Affiliate) The package we purchased contains 2 different sizes.  We used the smaller size.
  • Finishing hairspray, pomade, or gel (optional.)

2 Easy Hairstyles For School - Side Dutch Braid and Messy Bun Twist

2 Easy and Quick Back To School Hairstyles

This week we are adding 2 more styles to our "back to school hairstyles" collection! If you missed our video last week (showing 3 more school hairstyle ideas) you can find it here: 3 Easy Back To School Hairstyle Tutorials.

We love quick and easy hairstyles, buns, and braids for school mornings. Since it is "back to school time" for a lot of you, we wanted to share a few simple styles that my daughter frequently wears to school.  None of these hairstyles are super unique or extra special... but classic, cute, and fashionable styles that we use on a regular basis.  We are hoping these are even doable for those of you who do your own hair!

2 Back To School Hairstyles, Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We have already filmed more of our "go to" hairstyles and will be posting them throughout the month of August, so be on the look out if you are wanting more quick and easy ideas for school hair!

Hairstyles included in this video:

#1 Classic Side Dutch Braid

Voluminous Side Dutch Braid Tutorial

Cute side dutch braid tutorial, for school

#2 Messy Bun Twist Hairstyle (Inspired by a tutorial we saw on "8 passengers" family vlog channel.) Depending on what you wear and how you want this bun to look, you could dress it up or down.  I could see this working as a fancy updo for Prom... or as an every day casual school hairstyle.

Cute and easy "messy bun" tutorial

Easy twisted bun tutorial.

Both this voluminous side Dutch braid and messy bun twist would be great for teens, girls, or even busy moms. Both styles should work with long hair, medium hair, straight hair, wavy hair, or curly hair.

Supplies needed to recreate these looks:

Side dutch braid:

  • 1 medium size, clear elastic
  • Finishing hairspray (optional)
Messy bun twist:
  • 1 hair tie (large enough to make a ponytail with all of your hair)
  • Either 1-2 hair elastics, or several bobby pins (depending on how you choose to finish and secure the bun.)
  • Finishing hairspray (optional)

Cornucopia Braid Half up Hairstyle

Cornucopia braid hair tutorial

Our hairstyle tutorial this week is a variation of the "stingray braid" (which we have previously done a tutorial on) combined with an elegant braided flower.  I was playing around with the stingray braid (which is one of our favorites) and fell in love with how it looked when I tried pulling the feathered strands over and braided them in on the opposite side of the French braid.  After filming the tutorial of this braid, my husband told me that the finished hairstyle looked just like a cornucopia! After pointing this out, I couldn't see anything else, so this is the name that stuck! Many different and unique hairstyles can be made by using this technique shown in our tutorial, below...

Cornucopia Braid Half Up Hairstyle, Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Cornucopia braid half-up hairstyle

Gorgeous half up hairstyle, the cornucopia braid

Pretty hairstyle with braided flower, the cornucopia braid

We decided to leave half of her hair down, and added a braided rosette to the bottom/side of the braid for a sweet and feminine touch.  If you wanted to make an updo hairstyle instead of a half-up, you could easily add in all of the hair you are working with and end with the rosette at the nape of the neck.  This cornucopia braid could also be created by using a dutch braid instead of a french braid for a slightly different variation.  This elegant hairstyle would be great for a wedding, prom, church, recital, communion, etc..

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 2 clear hair elastics
  • Several bobby pins
*This hairstyle should work best on long hair, medium hair, straight hair, wavy hair and possibly curly hair.  You may want to use pomade, gel, wax or other product if your hair is prone to flyaways, frizz, or if you have layers.

P.S. I thought I had seen something similar to the top half of this hairstyle on Instagram, so I looked.... and looked! And sure enough, I finally found the braid I had remembered, the "flip over ladder braid" on an awesome account called "Abellas Braids."  Although we both created the braid in a different way, the end result looks very similar, so be sure to check hers out for a different method if you love this one!
