What a weird quest. I got one shotted when I first got there. I rezzed on top of the red drum off to the left. From there you can toss bombs at him w/o getting hit or aggro'd. Once he dies the little ones wont spawn & you can loot.

I stood on the barrel at 35, 60 and walked forward until the reticule was on him. Its a quick cast, and hits for ~4250 initially, then ~137000 as an after effect, the boss has about 436100 HP.

Easy if you have a flying mount - just land on the rock behind him to his left, and bomb him from there. He can't see you and hence can't attack you. Easy! :)

34.7, 59.5 is the correct red barrel to stand on. Just inch forwards until your reticle covers half of him, then toss away. Takes 3 or 4 bombs. Hurry and do this quest before they fix it and prevent us from "cheating".

For warriors that will use this guy to lvl up their ranged skill: If you have a Logitech g15 keyboard, u can make a macro to throw/shoot every x secs a bunch of times. That way, all you do is hit ur G key and itll auto do it various times, without u sittin there hittin the shoot key!

I couldn't stand on any of the barrels, as they were either too close or too far. As a rogue, though, I was able to stealth around to the rocks in back of him, and from there it was just a bit of experimentation to find a spot where I could bomb him without him being able to bomb me.

Wow... all your advice as of patch 2.1.2 (June 12) is all wrong.. on the barrel he could throw his bombs at me. Then tried going on the rocks with no success. 2) AS A GHOST CLIMB BEHIND HIM ON A ROCK

They seem to have changed his aggro radius a bit, which has made this quest trickier to complete. The only spot I could find where I could bomb him without taking damage was reached by flying to the purple rock behind him and landing on the lowest tier of it. From there with a bit of inching forward to find the right spot you can just about make the edge of the bomb radius circle touch him and take him down without any problems.

The barrel trick does work. You can walk back there, then jump on the barrel and you won't get attacked. Just start throwing bombs at Dr. Boom. The bombs do alittle over 4k dmg at first, but after 1 second, it does 135k. It takes about 5 bombs, and you have 10 charges...

He heals really slowly so you got plenty of time to bandage between runs and to run back if you die. Completed at 69 with no barrel trick. He hit me every time for a few thousand dmg, but i just threw one bomb at a time barely catching him in the radius of the bomb blast, then ran out and I didn't have any problems. I only died once when he got a crit off me and he didn't heal during the run back so I just kept at it. You only have to hit him with maybe 10 bombs to kill him.

This still works, but it's a particular barrel you have to stand on: the one on the near right of him. There are two barrels and a stack of explosives; it's the smaller barrel you need.

No need to deal with barrels...walk to left around rocks and find the only way i could find through them back toward the semicircle that he's in. Yes you will be close to the barrels but you don't have to be on them. Level up your bows, guns, chinese throwing stars, wands, or whatever before you bomb him. For those you can also just use them in front of Dr. Boom outside the bomb radius as long as you're in the range of your weapon that you're trying to level up.

I think you only 'tag' him when you use the bomb, not with just ranged attacks.
I decided to kill it with my shadowpriest while a hordy was around. Dr. Boom only had little hp left, so i decided not to risk going in there to bomb him, instead I casted spells on him.
However, the hordy just bombed the man and because it wasn't 'tagged' for me with my spellcastings, I didn't get the quest complete.

Very, very easy if you have flying mount/form. As a druid, I was able to fly right into the rocks directly behind him, and bomb him without aggro. Took me about 5 bombs to down him. Once he's dead, the bombs surrounding him will walk out of range, and you're able to hop down and loot.

Standing on the barrel right behind him didn't work. And you don't need a flying mount to get up to where Lunitara was... just die and ghost jump up there. It's a bit tricky but it can be done. It's easy from there, just drop the bombs on him.

If this quest was created to test people's patience, it worked.

Not sure if anyone knows but the screen shot link doesn't work - at least it didn't for me so I had no idea which barrels.

If you're facing Dr Boom its the ones to your left. I stood back a little on th big barrel the first time I did this and the gree circle didn't quite touch him and so I had to go back and get the quest again. Stand on the edge of the barrel and as long as the green touches his toes you're ok.

Haven't got flying mount yet which is annoying, got some nice pants from this quest though - its worth the effort.

As a 69 shaman I walked in, bombed him once, then proceeded to die. But I then went behind him with my ghost and on the tipped over barrel. From there (still a ghost) I jumped on top of the light to his right. Then I jumped way far away from him in a rock crevice sort of, then ressurected and slowly inched my way forward. Then i could fit him in the edge of my bomb radius. It may be a little confusing but it's still possible as of today August 4th.

Drums of leatherworking puts a cooldown of 2 minutes on the quest item used for this quest so avoid using them if a mob or a player interrupts your quest ;)

It was very easy. I went LEFT, around to the back and found a crack to jump thru. I got too close and took fire, but stepped back and all was fine. I could get a bomb real close but did not notice any damage, so I started shooting him. It took at least 5 minutes but he finally went down. I was stuck in the crack and could not move backwards so I went forward, looted, mounted and left.

Dr. Boom is obvious reference to Dr. Doom from the Marvel series "The Fantastic Four" if you were reading the quest text you'd see that it says "<name>, my former protege, Sparky Uberthruster, wouldn't wear his helmet while down here and one day transformed into the infamous Dr. Boom!" and in the marvel series he becomes Dr. Doom when he gets exposed to cosmic rays because he wouldn't raise the shield of the space ship up.

Fortunately his health doesn't go back to full when u die so just keep going back and bomb him until he's finally dead. The reward ,however, (including the sale of the crappy armor you recieve) probably won't cover your repair bill. (it barely covered miine =/) If I had it to do over I would just skip this quest. Running out of bombs? Hammer of Wrath is OP... that's all I'll say :) And coupled with Exorcism, if you've got time and water, you can easily kill him without using any bombs as a paladin. I imagine any ranged class with time and water could take him down now that I think about it.

I just submitted a picture of where I stood to accurately bomb him without aggroing, but we'll see if it get's approved or not. Just in case it doesn't, I'll try to explain.

I tried the barrels to his left, and every possible position on the rocks to his left; nothing worked. I just died a lot in the process. Finally, I accidentally landed on the rocks to behind him, to his right while I was circling, looking for any other options, and was surprised to see I didn't aggro him. Standing in a precise position, the outer rim of the AoE circle when you bomb him reached him. Took about five bombs, total. Super easy once you figure it out!

Oh, and once he's dead, wait a few seconds for the remaining bombs to run out and explode, then loot. They don't spawn anymore after he is dead.

*Edit: He has a quick respawn rate though. In the time it took me to type this, he had the opportunity to kill me. >_> Damn you, Dr. Boom!

Hmm, it's not very heavy. You must only make sure you hit him just at edge of the green selector circle, not in the middle. Then he don't hit you.
Searing totem does also work on him, but only VERY slowly. The bombs don't kill totem. His health is very high with 654000 hp.

Ranged players can train on him, because he doesn't move around en he wont die fast.

Earthbind totem seems very useful here. The bomb bots are blocked and blew all up already. You can now reach more to near him without avoiding bots.
Very effective totem.

The bombs are limited. Don't throw one if green circle on the ground don't just touch him.
Otherwise it's very very long ranged fight. If you walk more further, he shall throw one to you.

Tacts: You throw a bomb run up on a nearby cliff then they wont follow you and you wait for the cooldown. Then you run back bomb him and go away again. Repeat this a couple of times.

Forget the barrels! Behind him there is a ledge/cliff. You can stand on it and it circles back around a bit of hill and you are out of range. Throw the bomb, side step to safety!

Ok so after dying 3 times to this x_x I found the best way to do it.

Step 1 : Stand so you are looking at him, be in the middle as if there is an invisble line that goes through you and him
Step 2: When there is a free space between you and him, right click your bomb and aim it on the floor, move toward him, when the radius turns GREEN and it is near his feet you will get him
Step 3: Do not hit the bombs, do not go to his sides, just be patient
Step 4: He is a 66 Elite, if you are a ranged DPS or caster, you can use dots/abilities while the bomb is cooling down. You CAN kill him without the bombs, but would take ALOT of time at that level.

Extremely easy now that flying mounts are available earlier. Just find a good spot in the spikes surrounding him and bomb him from there, he has no chance of hitting you. It is a bit tedious to wait on the cooldown of the bombs though, so you might want to do it the way you're supposed to.

After dying suffiently frequently to acquire a 6G repair bill I found that standing on the rock immediately behind him did the trick. He could see me, I could see him and he was within range of the bomb. He didn't even attempt to blast me. Weird!

The barrels didn't work and neither did any of the other rocks.

Very annoying quest.

I can confirm that standing on the barrel still works. Again, facing Dr. Boom, it is the upright barrel on your left.

The targeting "lens" will just barely touch him from that spot. I had first thought that they had moved him back a few paces to avoid this tactic then I tried just inching the targeter up to him and the outer most side of it will touch him.

It took 8 bombs to kill him. If you have tried something else and have less than 8 bombs, I suggest abandoning the quest & then retaking it to get your full supply back.

I just completed this quest as a 67 (almost 68) warlock. I tried standing on the barrel to the left (Dr. Boom's right) and aggro'd every time (he threw dynamite at me). I had to stand behind the barrel, where i also aggro'd, but he didn't throw the dynamite at me. Just go around the back of the rocks or fly down. By standing behind the barrel he will be at the edge of your AoE circle and plenty of damage will be dealt. I only had to use 8/10 bombs.

I crept up along the right side along the rocks. I had to bomb him 3 times so it didn't take that long. Just need to get him into the edge of the bomb radius. Watch your health.

Someone else mentioned flying in behind him and bombing him from the rocks. I should have tried this.

This is just a bad quest as the only way to finish it is to glitch out Dr. Boom. Your bomb has about a 1 foot radius you can throw it, but Dr. Boom has a much larger radius, so you have to aggro him to throw a bomb at him. The problem is he will kill you in just a few hits, the bomb has about a 10 second cooldown, and you have to hit him multiple times with the bomb. As mentioned above, the only way to do this is to put yourself somewhere where he can't get to you.

With the stream of baby bombs coming out I'm guessing it was originally intended for you to hit a baby bomb with your bomb, causing a chain reaction back to Dr. Boom to kill him. Blizzard being Blizzard has yet to fix this quest after 4 years.

For the record, I was able to wedge myself between some rocks at 34.9 - 59.2; he aggro'd on me, but wasn't able to do any damage. I got to the spot without stealth, but I did have a flying mount. If you aim the bomb through the rocks in front of you, you can catch him with the edge of the green targeting circle. Took 8 charges of the bomb to get him down - no troubles at all.

Done as a 67 Rogue.

I found that the easiest way for me to do this, as a 67 frost mage, was to stand against the wall next to the table on the right (as you're looking at him). Cast ice barrier, then while that's active run forward a bit and throw the bomb. Step back to the table and wait for cooldown of barrier and bomb, then repeat. I also had my elemental standing and shooting at him, although that didn't make much of a dent in his 600K + health!

The 'standing on the barrels' trick didn't work for me, for some reason it wouldn't let me throw the bombs until I was on the ground.

After reading quite a few of these comments, and trying out a few of the strategies mentioned to no avail, I decided to simply trash this quest and save myself the time, frustration, and repair bill. The time spent on it in my opinion could be better spent on faster exp. if you're leveling.

I flew in and landed on the barrels to Dr. Boom's right, so left side as you are facing him. Once on the barrel he aggro'd me but did not shoot or throw anything at me. The Boom Bots did not even travel in my direction. Toss a bomb at him. He is essentially out of range but if you toss to max distance he should still take damage. It took about 7 shots to wipe him out. Boom bots will disappear after a short period of simply mount up and turn in.

You cannot pick up the quest unless you have gone through part the quest line in Area 52. If you are first starting the zone or haven't done any of the quests yet, start with You're Hired!. You will then do Invaluable Asset Zapping which will lead you to Lead Sapper Blastfizzle to finish the quest

Well, these tips helped, thanks - I can hit the guy and only get hit occasionally - but after hitting him 10 times, I got his health down to about 90% of his original level, and ran out of bombs. Seems like it would take a very long time to kill him, and the gear I'd win isn't that useful for my mage, so I gave up on this one.

Just stand where Miyari is standing in the screenshot. The first time I tried it I kept falling off the barrel, but once I got myself positioned correctly, it went very smoothly. Nothing aggroed to me and Dr. Boom went down in 4 or 5 bomb throws.

The Barrel in question is at 34, 59. Small barrel to the right of Dr Boom (Left for player if looking right at him). Flying in to the barrel, he will aggro you but be unable to attack.

The barrel to his right works like a charm. Tried the cliff behind him twice. Died very quickly twice. Just land on the barrel bring the bomb target as close as possible and keep throwing. Only took me about 4 bombs but I had already damaged him during my failed attempts.

IMO arguably the biggest waste of time & gold in WoW so far. Cannot get near to hurting the doc even using all suggestions on here.
Going to do more worthwhile quests instead. Seems to me that warrior class is given little chance of completing against mobs as a solo.

I tried this upteen times with several toons and ended up never doing it on any of them. :( Today I saw the comment about standing on the barrel to the RIGHT of DR BOOM and did it with about 4 of my bombs (after previous damages to him and 2 deaths for me) and with almost no damage to me! Hurray!

There is one simple and easy place to stand where he cant reach you, But you can drop the circle of the booms on to him. Here it is

Just completed this quest as a level 69 Blood DK and I had trouble finding a place behind him that allowed me to get close enough to throw bombs at him. He and his bots are capable of two-shotting you, so you don't want to stay around unless you're absolutely sure you can survive it. The cast time of the bombs is close to 3 seconds, which means I found myself dead several times before managing to dent his 400k health pool.

The bright side is he doesn't seem to reset between deaths. I was able to return to him after dying and continue trying to hit him. I even abandoned the quest once to get more bombs.

Here's what finally worked: I stopped trying to kill the bots and instead walked half-way inside the enclosure to a spot where no bots were going. I tossed a bomb at Dr. Boom, then backed away to reset the aggro. The bots walk in a straight pattern, giving plenty of time to avoid them. I recommend staying out of Dr. Boom's reach as much as you can, since his attention also causes the bots to attack you.

Now, where's the closest repair shop...

• Accept the quest, Dr. Boom!, from Lead Sapper Blastfizzle at coords 34.0, 68.0 (Inside a canyon at Area 52).
• Travel north to coords 35.1, 60.0.
• Use your Boom's Doom on Dr. Boom until it is killed (you will need to use your Boom's Doom several times).
• Dodge Boom Bot between attacks.
• After he is killed, travel south, back to Area 52, to coords 34.0, 68.0
• Turn in the quest to Lead Sapper Blastfizzle.

Run in and throw bomb, run back out of range, heal if necessary. Rinse and repeat.

For Horde Loremaster:

All soloed on my alt 110 ilvl 934 Guardian Druid. If you’re deciding to do loremaster later in the game like me and you’re starting the zone fresh, I highly suggest doing it on a druid because you can kill and instant fly off, makes things go by so much faster.

All I did was follow around the large bold exclamation point on the map. Sometimes the quests are mixed and it makes you run around back and forth, but so be it. This is still minimum list of quests to do, everything else is a side quest.

Start @ Area 52 from Rocket-Chief Fuselage at 32.67, 64.48:
You’re Hired! (red glowing stones on ground)
Reporting to Engineering
From Chief Engineer Trep:
Essence for the Engines
Elemental Power Extraction (use it on it before you kill it, it will be a blue dot on the ground by its dead body)

This quest is horribly overtuned. He has 600k health. The bombs do neither him nor his walking bomblets any damage, and if you get close enough to throw a bomb, you'll get hit and die.

I did this as a 77 guardian with an 84 hunter. I kept picking off the bomblets and healing the hunter. In between I would moonfire him. It must have taken us 20 minutes to kill him. This quest has gone horribly wrong.

Just did this on my 77 UH DK. Stand on the barrels to his far right, the bombs cannot get to you and you can reach with the bombs you throw at him. It helps if you have some ranged abilities too. I used Raise Dead (had to do this a few times as my ghoul kept dying), Dark Transformation, Outbreak and Unholy Blight. Your spells don't do much compared to the bombs but every little bit helps.

As another person said a while ago, standing behind Dr. Boom on the rocks works perfectly. If you have a flying mount (or, I suppose, a good way of jumping without being seen), then look for the pillar of rocks directly behind Dr. Boom. You're looking for the pillar that has the splotches of purple and black on it. There are two bases to the pillar - you're looking for the smaller, stop base. If you position yourself correctly, he can't technically "see" you behind the pillar, but you can just barely reach him with the bomb. Killed him easily and got some slight amusement out of him turning around over and over again without being able to attack me.

Work smart, not harder when it comes to these old quests :)

Description

<name>, my former protege, Sparky Uberthruster, wouldn't wear his helmet while down here and one day transformed into the infamous Dr. Boom!

And he stole off to the northeast with most of our sapping equipment! He and his Boom Bots have been a menace to Area 52 ever since.

I need you to go to his Camp of Boom just outside of town and put an end to him! Use these Boom's Doom bombs to take him out.

And make sure not to get too close to him or his Boom Bots!
