Steemit (STEEM) is a blockchain-powered social media site where people can earn money for their posts and comments. The Steemit desktop or mobile app allows you access directly onto the blockchain, where users’ posts are stored and logged indefinitely just like with a cryptocurrency transaction. Users vote on content they like, with upvotes becoming currency which gets paid weekly to the creator.

Steemit launched in 2016 under the direction of Steemit Inc, a private New York based firm founded by Ned Scott, and Dan Larimer – the former creator of EOS and Bitshares.
STEEM is the currency which represents the market share of Steemit, although the social network itself also uses Steem Power (SP) and Steem Dollars (SBD). Steem Power represents a user’s weight within the community – an upvote from someone with large amounts of SP results in more money. Earnings come in the form of Steem Dollars, which can be spent with compatible vendors, converted to STEEM, or cashed out via Bitcoin and then fiat.
