The goal of the WikiProject Taxonomy is to populate Wikidata with taxonomic names and their classification(s) so that this information is available to all Wikimedia contributors (Wikimedia includes the Wikipedias, Wikispecies, and Wikidata itself).

Taxonomic information is continually changing as we learn more about Earth’s biota, and can sometimes be contentious. As a result, there is not a single, universally accepted classification of the living world. For users of taxonomic information, perhaps the most frustrating consequence of this is that there can be multiple names for the same species. Most taxonomic databases will tell you which species name they prefer (i.e., which name they "accept"), and what is the "correct" classification for that species. But Wikidata includes information from multiple sources, and these sources may disagree on the accepted name for a species, hence to remain neutral Wikidata may have items for each alternative name for a species. Wikidata also allows for alternative classifications, hence a taxon may have more than one value for its parent taxon.

The goal of representing multiple classifications without privileging any one of them immediately adds a layer of complexity for anyone wishing to link to the Wikidata entry for a species. If you have some non-taxonomic data (such as species distribution, average body mass, clutch size, etc.) for a species that has more than one name, to which Wikidata item do you attach that information? If data on the same species is attached to different Wikidata names that are all synonyms, how do you bring all that data together? It also means that in order to construct the information for a taxobox for a Wikipedia page we cannot assume that all information about a species can be retrieved from a single Wikidata item.

Below we provide guidance to contributors wanting to add traits and other non-taxonomic data to taxon items in Wikidata (e.g., body size for a species). We also provide rules for adding taxa that reflect the Wikidata model for taxa, and which will help the project become a trusted and reliable source of taxonomic information. We also provide tools to help answer common questions, such as "what is the classification of this species", "what are all the alternative names for this species?', and "what do we know about this species?".

In general, each taxon has its own item here: The species Exiliboa placata (Q606) as well as its monotypic genus Exiliboa (Q13231734). Moreover, each (important/notable) taxonomic viewpoint can be stored, also historic ones. See for example Cactaceae (Q14560).
