Tuberculosis/Mycobacteria

World Tuberculosis (TB) Day commemorates the discovery of the organism that causes TB (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) by Dr. Robert Koch on March 24, 1882. World TB day is commemorated on this date each year to raise awareness among public and policy makers that TB remains an epidemic in most parts of the world, and a public health problem in developed countries. Across the world, over 3,500 people lose their lives to TB each day – totaling nearly 1.3 million deaths and 10.6 million people with active TB disease in 2022.

Koch's discovery opened the way towards diagnosing and curing TB. Although great strides have been made to control and cure TB, people still get sick and die from this disease. Diagnostic testing continues to improve, but multi-drug resistance to treatment is an increasing challenge.

Hundreds of recognized species of mycobacteria, in addition to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, can cause pulmonary disease and other illnesses. These organisms are diverse in their ability to cause human disease, and can be pathogenic, opportunistic, or nonpathogenic.
