NGC 1278은 페르세우스 별자리에서 약 2억 3천만 광년 떨어진[2] 곳에 위치한 타원 은하다.[3]NGC 1278은 1863년 2월 14일 천문학자 하인리히 다레스트에 의해 발견되었다.그 후 1884년 10월 22일 천문학자 기욤 비구르단에 의해 재발견되었고 이후 IC 1907로 등재되었다.[4]NGC 1278은 페르세우스 성단의[5][4] 일원으로 저조도 AGN(LLAGN)이다.[6]

구상 성단

금속이 풍부한 또는 "빨간" 구상 성단의 지배적인 인구를 가진 근처의 은하 NGC 1277과 달리, NGC 1278은 금속이 풍부한 것과 금속이 부족한 것 또는 "푸른" 구상 성단의 풍부한 인구를 가지고 있다.[7]
