오늘날 전립선암에 가장 많이 사용되는 바이오마커는 전립선 특이 항원(PSA)의 혈청 수준 또는 파생 측정값이다.그러나 PSA는 전립선 특이적이지만 암 특이하지는 않기 때문에 불완전한 바이오마커다.예를 들어, PSA는 양성 전립선 비대증을 가진 노인들에게서 증가할 수 있다.전립선암 진단을 개선하기 위해 몇 개의 새로운 바이오마커들이 조사되고 있다.이 중 일부는 소변 샘플로 측정할 수 있으며, 향후 여러 개의 비뇨기 바이오마커 조합이 PSA를 대체할 가능성도 있다.[6]
PCA3는 반복적인 전립선 조직검사를 받는 남성들에게 악성종양의 존재를 예측하는 데 유용한 것으로 나타났다.[9][10]이는 디지털 직장검사와 PSA가 전립선암 가능성을 시사하는 환자에게 임상적으로 유용할 수 있다는 것을 의미하지만, 첫 전립선 조직검사는 정상 결과를 반환한다.이는 약 60%의 사례에서 발생하며, 반복 검사 시 20-40%가 비정상적인 생체검사 결과를 가지고 있다.[11]
PCA3에 대해 연구되고 있는 다른 용도에는 종양 용적, 등급(글레이슨 점수) 또는 체외 연장 같은 이상 종양 특징과의 상관관계가 있다.이 연구들은 지금까지 상반된 결과를 낳았다.[12][13][14]
