There is a chance of rain, especially in the southwest, but otherwise the weather will be mostly fair with daytime temperatures around 10C.

Variable weather is in the forecast during May Day celebrations in Finland this year, says Yle meteorologist Henriikka Heikinoja.

Wednesday, May Day eve, started off with cloudy skies over most of the country and sun in the north, but also with rain moving in from the southwest that will likely reach parts of the south coast.

"There will be some rain during the day, but it will clear up again towards the evening," Heikinoja adds.

Wednesday's daytime temperatures will remain in the low teens Celsius across the country. Overnight, the thermometer is likely to slip down below zero across much of the country.

According to Heikinoja, the weather on May Day eve will be a couple of degrees cooler than average. Last year, the weather was the warmest in more than a decade.

On Thursday, May Day, temperatures will rise to as much as 10 degrees Celsius in the north. In southern and central parts of the country, temperatures could reach a couple of degrees above 10C.

There is a chance of light showers in the southwest on Thursday, with variable cloudiness and some sunshine in between.

"This is not bad May Day weather, but it will not go down in the history books as particularly good either," Heikinoja sums up.
