Biography
Majora's Mask
In Majora's Mask, Mutoh is the head of the Clock Town Carnival Committee in charge of constructing the Festival Tower for the Carnival of Time.[7][8] During the daytime, Mutoh is seen in the Mayor's Residence arguing with Captain Viscen about whether or not to cancel the carnival,[9] to order the evacuation from the town in the wake of the impending Moon. He refuses to believe the potential crash of the Moon, and claims that the inside of the Clock Town is safer than the outside.[10] As he opposes Viscen's proposal of the cancellation of the carnival, he tells Mayor Dotour that the mayor's wife would have the same opinion as him,[11] to make the mayor decline the proposal.[3] Link can use the Couple's Mask obtained from Anju and Kafei to stop the argument, earning him a Piece of Heart.
If Link talks to Mutoh while wearing Kafei's Mask, he assumes Kafei is one of the fled people and blames Kafei's absence right before his own wedding.[12] Contrary to his own claim, he shows concern about his wife that if she has already been evacuated from the town,[4][note 1] the contradiction makes Viscen snap at him.[13]
Regardless of whether Link stopped the argument, on the night of the Final Day, Mutoh stands at the foot of the completed tower with no apprentices beside him, who has abandoned him and the town.[14] He is yelling at the Moon that he has no fear and tries to hold the Carnival of Time in the same way as every year.[15][16] In the credits cutscene, Mutoh is seen attending Kafei and Anju's wedding.
The Minish Cap
Mutoh and his Carpenters appear in and around Hyrule Town in The Minish Cap. At the start of the game, they can all be found at north gate of Hyrule Town repairing the damage caused by Vaati.[17] After Link obtains the White Sword, Mutoh can be found in the Carpenters Shop, where he remains for the rest of the game. He boasts that his ancestors built Hyrule Castle,[18] and tells Link that he is looking for a challenge.[19][20] If Link Fuses Kinstone Pieces with Bremor (who can be found standing by the Post Office after Link obtains the Flippers), Mutoh will become motivated to construct a new Vacant House for Gorman to rent out,[21] satisfying his desire for meaningful work.[22]
Mutoh is one of the potential characters to have a random Kinstone Fusion available.[23]
Trivia
- In the American English version and the British English version of Majora's Mask, Mutoh's dialogues contain several mistranslations.
- When Mutoh assumes Kafei escaped from the town and blames him for it, he mentions people who have already escaped too as his sons.[24][25] They are stated as his apprentices in the Japanese version.[26] It is changed to to match the Japanese version in Majora's Mask 3D.[12][27]
- At the Final Night, Mutoh comments that his apprentices would be disgusted with people who escaped from the town,[28][29] despite all of his apprentices having already escaped from the town too. It is mistranslated of the Japanese version, where Mutoh blames his apprentices for running off,[30] the error is likely caused by the sentence "弟子が 聞いてあきれるぜDeshi ga Kiite Akireru ze (The cowards are my apprentices. What a joke.)" being mistaken for "弟子が聞いたら あきれるぜDeshi ga Kiitara Akireru ze (If my apprentices hear that, they'd be disgusted.)" It is changed to to match the Japanese version in Majora's Mask 3D.[16][31]
- When Link talks to Mutoh at the Final Night in his Deku Scrub form, Mutoh states the top of the Festival Tower is not high enough to reach to the entrance of the Clock Tower,[32][33] apologizes to Link for the inconvenience,[32][33] and says he wants to scare the Moon away.[32][33] These dialogues remain unchanged in Majora's Mask 3D.[14][34]
- In the Japanese version, Mutoh says even if someone wants to go to the top of the Clock Tower, they can not reach the entrance, as the bridge is unfinished.[35]
- Mutoh's apology to Link is a mistranslation of "先代に申しワケねえSendai ni Mōshiwake nē (I have no excuse for my predecessor.)"[35] The predecessor in the original text is unmentioned in the English versions.
- In the Japanese version, Mutoh blames his apprentices for being scared of the Moon,[35] instead of wanting to scare the Moon off, which is likely a misunderstanding of the original text.
- If Link talks to Mutoh again, he expresses his frustration by saying "This had better be the last of the surprises!"[36][37] It is a mistranslation of "ほか あたってくんなHoka Atatte Kun-na (Ask anyone but me.)",[38] which is "他を当たってくれHoka o Atatte Kure (Could you ask someone else?)" written in an informal speech pattern, being mistaken for a broken Japanese, "他の当たって来るなHoka no Atatte Kuru na (I hope no other trouble comes to hit me.)" The dialogues are changed in Majora's Mask 3D, but still do not match the Japanese version.[39][40]
- The debug message for Mutoh's model in Majora's Mask says "ムトゥ 踊る大走査線Mutō Odoru Dai Sōsasen (Muto: The Dancing Great Investigation Line)",[note 2][41] references to the 1995 Indian film Muthu, which is known as ムトゥ 踊るマハラジャMutō Odoru Maharaja (Muthu: The Dancing Maharaja) in Japan, and the Japanese live action series 踊る大捜査線Odoru Dai Sōsasen (The Dancing Great Investigation Line).
- Mutoh's name is shared by the king of the ancient Cobble Kingdom, King Mutoh, from Phantom Hourglass. It is intended as a reference for him, and the names of each of the Cobble Knights are based on the Carpenters in The Minish Cap.[42]
Nomenclature
Mutoh is a romanization[note 3] of his Japanese name, ムトー. The name may be derived from 無糖Mutō (sugar-free), which is a common option for ready-to-drink coffee in Japan, as characters who appear in the Mayor's Residence seem to be named after words related to coffee.

Notes
- ↑ The context is clearfied in the Japanese version's text, "かあちゃん、ちゃんと逃げたかな・・・・ (My wife, I hope she has already escaped...)(Translation: BluishBlue).
- ↑ 捜査線 is misspelled as 走査線
- ↑ The spelling follows the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs passport standard that uses oh for the long vowel o instead of ō.
