amiibo

This article is about the line of figures. For the ability in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, see amiibo (Ability).

amiibo is a line of Near-Field Communication (NFC) devices available for the Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch systems.[7]

Overview

amiibo are figures or cards depicting Nintendo characters, as well as third-party characters that have appeared in Super Smash Bros. series games. They are divided into different series, based on the game or game series that particular figure or card is associated with. The same character can appear in different amiibo series, but will often maintain a similar functionality across each series.

amiibo are used within compatible software by tapping them onto the NFC reader of compatible hardware to scan them:

The Legend of Zelda amiibo

There are four series of amiibo depicting characters from The Legend of Zelda: the 30th Anniversary series, the The Legend of Zelda series, the Breath of the Wild series, and the Super Smash Bros. series.[8] These amiibo are fully compatible with a variety of games from The Legend of Zelda. Additionally, many The Legend of Zelda amiibo may be used with other Nintendo games to unlock The Legend of Zelda-related content or generic content.

Functionality by Game

Hyrule Warriors

Artwork of Link riding the Spinner in Hyrule Warriors

In Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors Legends, scanning an amiibo unlocks an amiibo reward the first time it is scanned each day, with some The Legend of Zelda amiibo unlocking special rewards. Up to five amiibo rewards may be obtained each day. A Medal is achieved after receiving 100 amiibo rewards. amiibo functionality was added to Hyrule Warriors in Version 1.4.0, which was released on November 27, 2014 worldwide and Hyrule Warriors Legends had amiibo functionality from launch.

In Hyrule Warriors, scanning a Link or Toon Link amiibo unlocks the Spinner if it is not already unlocked. Otherwise, scanning a Link or Toon Link amiibo yields a random third tier weapon for Link rated 3 stars or higher. In Hyrule Warriors Legends, it is not required to scan an amiibo to obtain the Spinner, as it is available from the start.[26] Scanning a Zelda, Ganondorf, or Sheik amiibo yields a random third tier weapon for the scanned character rated 3 stars or higher. In Hyrule Warriors Legends, scanning the Wolf Link amiibo yields a random Shackle for Midna or, provided that she is unlocked, a random Mirror for Twili Midna. In Hyrule Warriors, the Wolf Link amiibo will be treated like any generic amiibo. In Hyrule Warriors Legends, The Toon Link amiibo unlocks weapons for Toon Link instead of Link.[27] Scanning any other amiibo will reward the player with a random weapon rated 3 stars or lower, a random Material, or a random amount of Rupees.

Twilight Princess HD

Promotional art of the Wolf Link amiibo from Twilight Princess HD

In Twilight Princess HD, the Wolf Link amiibo, along with any amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. series, are all compatible. amiibo can be scanned on the collection screen once light has been restored to the Faron Province.[28]

Scanning the Wolf Link amiibo transports Link to the Cave of Shadows dungeon. When it is scanned after completing a section of the Cave of Shadows, it will save Link's current Hearts. It can then be scanned once more inside the trial to restore Link's health to the saved value. The saved health value will also affect Wolf Link's maximum health when he is summoned in Breath of the Wild.

Scanning the Link or Toon Link amiibo will replenish Arrows, while scanning the Zelda or Sheik amiibo will restore Link's Hearts. Scanning Ganondorf's amiibo allows Link to take twice as much damage, and will turn his red Heart gauge blue to signify the change.[29] If used while in Hero Mode, the amiibo will quadruple the damage taken. Aside from the Wolf Link amiibo, all amiibo can only be scanned once per day. Scanning Ganondorf's amiibo a second time will bring up in a message stating that incoming damage has already been doubled.[30]
