Game Information
Story
Some time after the events of Breath of the Wild, Gloom started to appear from the caverns Beneath Hyrule Castle, resulting in people becoming sick.[6] According to Zelda, entering this area has long been forbidden by the Royal Family of Hyrule.[7] In spite of this, she and Link enter these caverns to investigate the source of the Gloom.
As Zelda and Link grow closer to the source of the Gloom, the Master Sword senses the presence of something and begins to glow.[8] During their exploration, the pair find ancient Zonai Ruins and Statues.[9][10][11] Eventually, they come upon the Forgotten Foundation, which features a set of Murals. Zelda recognizes that these Murals depict a legend of a war between the allied tribes of Hyrule and the Demon King.[12] Upon viewing the first two Murals, Zelda recalls the myth that the Royal Family began from a union between Hylians and gods who descended from the heavens. She realizes that these gods must be referring to the Zonai.[13] The next Mural shows the Demon King stealing a relic from Hyrule Kingdom and rising to power. Through this, she determines that these Murals tell the story of the Imprisoning War, which occurred many years ago.[14] Excited by this discovery, she proceeds to take Pictures of the Murals with the Purah Pad.[15]
Entering the next room leads Zelda and Link to the Imprisoning Chamber, where they come across a mummified corpse held down by the Right Arm. When they approach, the arm falls from the corpse, and the Secret Stone on its wrist falls in front of Zelda. When she picks it up, it begins to glow yellow. At that moment, the corpse begins to stir, and Gloom erupts from its body. Link steps in front of Zelda to defend her, but this results in the Master Sword becoming Decayed. His right arm is also injured, reducing his Stamina and Heart Containers to their minimum in the process. As Link swings the Master Sword for a final time, its blade shatters, though one of the shards is able to cut the corpse's cheek.
The corpse recognizes Zelda and figures out who Link is.[16] He claims that Rauru had faith in them, though they were not prepared to face him.[17] He then unleashes a wave of Gloom upward, which pushes Hyrule Castle into the Sky. Afterwards, the corpse disappears further into the Depths. The disruption in the ground causes Zelda to slip into a deep hole. Link lunges to catch her, but he misses and she continues to fall. Zelda vanishes in a bright light and is transported to the distant past, while Link is caught and taken elsewhere by the Right Arm.
Link comes to in the Room of Awakening. A mysterious voice says that he was saved, but that his arm had to be replaced with the Right Arm.[18] Nearby, he finds the Decayed Master Sword, which has had its power diminished by Gloom.[19] In order to leave the Room, Link must Skydive down to a Sky Island below him. This gives him a view of the Great Sky Island, including the Temple of Time and the Light Dragon flying in the distance. When he lands, he meets a Steward Construct. It correctly identifies Link and gives him the Purah Pad, which it claims Zelda entrusted to it.[20][21] It then directs Link to meet with Zelda inside the Temple of Time.[22] When Link asks where they are, the Steward Construct informs him that they are within the Garden of Time on the Great Sky Island.[23]
Once he has met with the Steward Construct, Link can Skydive down to the main portion of the Great Sky Island. However, when he tries to open the doors to the Temple of Time with his new Right Arm, the emblem in front of them glows red and he is denied entry. At that moment, the Spirit of Rauru appears behind Link, informing him that he does not have enough power to open the doors.[24] He then introduces himself to Link, explaining that the Right Arm was once his.[25] To recover the Right Arm's power, Rauru directs Link to the three Shrines of Light in the Garden of Time, which are filled with sacred Light.[26] When Link enters each of these Shrines, Rauru will appear before him, and he uses the Shrine's Light to restore one of the Ancient Powers.[27] These are Ultrahand, Fuse, and Ascend, and Link must use them to reach the end of their respective Shrines.[28][29][30] At the end of each Shrine, Link will receive a Light of Blessing from a Rauru and Sonia Statue.[31] When he has collected a Light of Blessing from each Shrine, he is able to open the door to the Temple of Time.
Inside, Link finds an apparition of a Secret Stone of Time hovering above the Altar. When he touches the Secret Stone, he sees a vision of Zelda floating before him. She extends her hand toward Link, and when he takes it, she grants him the ability Recall. Rauru speculates that that was not the real Zelda, before disappearing.[32] Link continues through the temple before his path is blocked by another gate, which Link needs four hearts to continue through.[33] Here, Rauru points Link to the fourth shrine, the Nachoyah Shrine in order to get the fourth Light of Blessing so he can trade it off at the Goddess Statue for a heart.[34] Link opens the gate and Rauru appears telling Link that it was so nice to meet him before disappearing.[35] Link walks across a long platform before finding a glowing pedestal. He puts the Master Sword on the pedestal which transports it to Zelda in Ancient Hyrule. After hearing Zelda's voice point him to an area south of Hyrule Castle, Link then Skydives off the Great Sky Island and lands in the Bottomless Pond.
Back on the Surface of Hyrule, Link proceeds to Lookout Landing, where he encounters Purah. After telling Purah what happened on the Great Sky Island, Link heads to what is left of Hyrule Castle, where the Monster-Control Crew is conducting the Search for Princess Zelda.[36] He encounters Hoz at the top of the First Gatehouse. Shortly after their meeting, another guard notices Zelda on a tower on the other side of the Castle.[37] Zelda proceeds to turn into Light and vanish.[38] Hoz asks Link to report back to Purah at Lookout Landing.[39] After telling Purah what happened at the Castle, Puah tells Link that she would like Link to investigate the strange things happening all around Hyrule.[40] Purah then proceeds to tell Link that she needs him to use the Lookout Landing Skyview Tower to acquire the Map data from northern Hyrule Field.[41] After Purah sets up the Skyview Tower, Josha activates all the Skyview Towers in Hyrule.[42] Purah gives Link the Paraglider to use, after which Link is launched into the Sky to Scan his surroundings.[43] Link then goes to the four regions troubled by problems, Hebra, Eldin, Lanayru, and Gerudo.[44] The chaos throughout Hyrule is known as the Upheaval.[45]
In Hebra, Link meets the young Rito Tulin. Together they find the Wind Temple,[46] defeat Colgera, discover the Secret Stone of Wind, and speak with the original Sage of Wind, Raphica. Colgera and other monsters were summoned by Ganondorf to prevent the new Sages from obtaining the Secret Stones and thus awakening.[47] Now, Tulin becomes the new Sage of Wind. The blizzard that plagued Hebra disappears and Rito Village returns to normal.
Raphica tells them about the Imprisoning War. Many years ago, when the kingdom of Hyrule was still young, the Demon King Ganondorf sought to rule the land.[48] The then King of Hyrule, Rauru, gave four Secret Stones to warriors from the Rito, Zora, Goron, and Gerudo tribes to amplify their powers. Rauru, his sister Mineru, Zelda and the four warriors fought the Demon King Ganondorf, but could not defeat him.[49] Rauru had to sacrifice himself to imprison Ganondorf.[50] The Six Sages survived the battle with the Demon King. Zelda, the Sage of Time, visited the four warriors and asked them to help Link in the future.[51][52] They do so, by passing their Secret Stones to the new Sages and asking them to fight the Demon King with Link.[53]
In Eldin, Link meets the young Goron Yunobo. Together they find the Fire Temple, defeat Marbled Gohma, discover the Secret Stone of Fire, and speak with the original Sage of Fire, Agraston. Yunobo becomes the new Sage of Fire. The Marbled Rock Roasts that caused adult Gorons to become hypnotized disappear and the Gorons return to normal.
In Lanayru, Link meets the young Zora Sidon. Together they find the Water Temple, defeat Mucktorok, discover the Secret Stone of Water, and speak with the original Sage of Water, Qia. Sidon becomes the new Sage of Water. The Sludge rain stops.
In Gerudo, Link meets the young Gerudo Riju. Together they find the Lightning Temple, defeat Queen Gibdo, discover the Secret Stone of Lightning, and speak with the original Sage of Lightning, Ardi. Riju becomes the new Sage of Lightning. The Sand Shroud that was threating Gerudo Town dissolves.
Upon Link's return to Lookout Landing, Zelda is sighted on the floating portion of Hyrule Castle.[54] As a result, Purah sends Link to look for her.[55] Eventually, Link is lead to the Throne Room, where the figure is revealed to be a Phantom Ganon under the control of Demon King Ganondorf.[56][57] After Link defeats the Phantom, Tulin, Yunobo, Sidon, and Riju arrive to defend him from Ganondorf.[58] When Ganondorf flees, they regroup at Lookout Landing, where Purah determines that the Zelda that has been causing trouble throughout Hyrule was not the real one.[59] With Purah's help, they decide that they need to search ancient ruins for clues to the location of the Sage of Spirit.[60]
Inside the Floating Ring Ruin at Kakariko Village, Link finds a Stone Slab indicating that the key to finding the Sage Mineru may be found in the Zonai Ruins in Faron.[61] With the Zonai Survey Team's assistance, Link performs a ceremony at the ruins that clears the thick fog obscuring the Thunderhead Isles.[62][63] While exploring the island chain, Link finds a Zonai Relic, and he hears Mineru's voice asking him to follow the light that it creates.[64] Link brings the Zonai Relic through Tobio's Hollow Chasm and places it into a mold in the Construct Factory. Mineru then asks for Link's help to assemble a body for her.[65] After Link finishes assembling Mineru's Construct, the two travel south to the Spirit Temple, defeat the Seized Construct and recover her Secret Stone of Spirit, allowing Mineru to join Link as the Sage of Spirit. Mineru then tells Link to seek the advice of the Great Deku Tree, as Zelda had set in motion a plan to restore the Master Sword and deliver it to Link in the present.[66]
In particular, after Rauru sacrificed himself to seal Demon King Ganondorf during the Imprisoning War, Zelda was concerned that Link would be unable to defeat him in the future.[67] Behind the Temple of Time, the Decayed Master Sword appeared before her, having traveled through Time to recover its strength with her.[68] At that moment, Zelda realizes that there is something she can do to help Link.[69] Zelda swallowed her Secret Stone.[70] This transformed her into the Light Dragon, turning her into an immortal Dragon by sacrificing her sense of self.[70] By spending centuries absorbing her sacred Light power, Zelda planned to restore and empower the Master Sword.[71] In the modern era, the Light Dragon can be found flying through the Sky above Hyrule, with the revitalized Master Sword embedded in her head.[72]
Returning to Lookout Landing, Link gives Purah an update on his hunt for the fifth Sage,[73] and she tells him that the Great Deku Tree can be found within the Great Hyrule Forest. However, when Link attempts to travel through the Lost Woods, he is blocked by an unusual fog that even the Koroks cannot pass through.[74] Instead, Link travels to the Korok Grove in the Great Hyrule Forest Depths and uses an Ascend Access Point to reach the Korok Forest, where the Koroks appear frozen in place and the Great Deku Tree is sickened by Gloom. Entering the Deku Tree Chasm within the Great Deku Tree's Navel, Link encounters a Gloom Spawn and Phantom Ganon. Upon their defeat, the Gloom afflicting the Great Deku Tree vanishes and the Koroks are restored to life. By speaking to the Great Deku Tree, Link can obtain the exact location of the Light Dragon. Link obtains the Master Sword from the Light Dragon.
Having completed all the necessary preparations, Link returns to Purah once more. Expecting the Demon King to be somewhere within Hyrule's Depths, she recommends that Link speak with her Head of Depths Research, Josha.[75] Following her advice, Link travels to the Great Abandoned Central Mine in his search for clues. There, he finds and defeats Master Kohga, beginning the Side Adventure Master Kohga of the Yiga Clan. Throughout this Side Adventure, Link tracks down Master Kohga at several Abandoned Mines across the Depths. At the Abandoned Hebra Mine, Master Kohga reveals that the Demon King's lair is hidden in the Depths below Hyrule Castle.[76] After dispatching Kohga for the final time, Link returns to Lookout Landing, where Purah tells him that the only thing left to do is confront Ganondorf.[77]
At the bottom of the Hyrule Castle Chasm, Link finds himself in Gloom's Approach, an array of tunnels now infested with Ganondorf's Monsters. Within these passageways, he loses contact with the Sages,[78] and he shortly thereafter makes his way through the Forgotten Foundation and Imprisoning Chamber. Descending further still, he arrives at Gloom's Lair, where he is ambushed by the Demon King's Army. As they attempt to attack him, the Sages arrive to support him, and the group battles through the waves of Monsters together. After the Army is defeated, a large wall of Gloom collapses, revealing the path to Gloom's Origin. Then, a Colgera, Marbled Gohma, Mucktorok, Queen Gibdo, and Seized Construct appear. The Sages tell Link to press onwards while they deal with the new foes.[79] In Gloom's Origin, Link finally comes face-to-face with Ganondorf.
As Link enters the room, Ganondorf delivers a monologue about his ambitions of bringing darkness across Hyrule, restoring his body to its former glory as he does so.[80] Once he finishes, Link draws the Master Sword with a flourish, and the two begin their duel. They trade blows back and forth until Ganondorf is weakened enough that he unleashes the power of his Secret Stone, entering his second form and creating several Phantom Ganons to assist him in the fight. As he and Link resume their combat, the Sages arrive to support Link. After Ganondorf has again been weakened, he dispels the Phantom Ganons and unleashes a blast of energy, knocking the Sages out of commission. He then taunts Link, and they begin the final phase of the battle. Once Link finally dispatches Ganondorf, he gives in to his hatred and decides to do whatever it takes to destroy Link.[81] He then swallows his Secret Stone and undergoes draconification, grabbing Link in his mouth and flying up to the Sky.
High in the Central Hyrule Sky, the transformation completes and Ganondorf fully becomes the Demon Dragon. As Link struggles in the Demon Dragon's maw, the Light Dragon swoops in to defend Link, causing the Demon Dragon to drop Link. The Light Dragon flies down to catch him, and the two face the Demon Dragon together. With the Light Dragon's help, Link repeatedly lands on the Demon Dragon to strike at its weak points. After the last weak point is destroyed, the Secret Stone appears on the Demon Dragon's forehead. Link dives down, opens a crack in the Secret Stone, and stabs the Master Sword directly into it. Link and the Light Dragon then watch as the Demon Dragon is consumed in a massive explosion.
Link then finds himself floating in an ethereal skyscape with the Light Dragon below him. The Spirits of Rauru and Sonia appear next to him and begin to channel their power through the Right Arm at the Light Dragon, undoing Zelda's draconification and restoring Link's Hylian arm.[82] Link then awakes, finding himself falling back down to the Surface with Zelda a short distance below him, unconscious. He Dives down to her, grabs her hand, and shelters her as they land in the lake on Mabe Prairie. Link carries Zelda to the shore, where she awakes and realizes that everything is over.[83]
Some time later, Link, Zelda, Purah, and the Sages travel up to the Temple of Time on the Great Sky Island, where they say goodbye to Mineru as she moves on.[84]
Gameplay
Tears of the Kingdom features similar gameplay to Breath of the Wild, with several changes and new elements, such as the expansion of Hyrule to include not only the Surface, but also the Sky and the Depths.
The Sheikah Slate Runes have been replaced with new Ancient Powers. Ultrahand allows Link to pick up and move Objects in his surroundings, as well as attach them to each other. Fuse grants Link the ability to attach Objects and Materials to his Weapons and Shields, increasing their attack power. Ascend gives Link the power to move through solid terrain above him. Recall allows Link to reverse the trajectory of Objects. Lastly, Autobuild lets Link instantly recreate Vehicles and other structures he has previously made with Ultrahand.
Development
Development of the twentieth game in The Legend of Zelda series began in 2017 after the production for Breath of the Wild concluded.[85] During the E3 2019 Nintendo Direct, it was announced that it would be a sequel to Breath of the Wild.[86][87] The idea of creating a direct sequel came from the fact that Eiji Aonuma, producer of Breath of the Wild, wanted to revisit the same Hyrule while incorporating a new story and gameplay mechanics.[2] Initially, new ideas were thought of for DLC but evolved into a new game when too many were gathered.[88]
amiibo Support
Tears of the Kingdom is compatible with various The Legend of Zelda amiibo which allow Link to receive additional fabric for his Paraglider that changes its appearance. A Tears of the Kingdom series Link amiibo was announced on February 8, 2023 that released alongside the game on May 12, 2023.[89] On June 21, 2023, amiibo figures of Zelda and Demon King Ganondorf were announced, and they were later released on November 3, 2023.[90][91][92][93]
Post-launch Content
While no Downloadable Content for Tears of the Kingdom was announced during the trailers, the footer of the official Tears of the Kingdom website featured a disclaimer for purchasing Downloadable Content to use for the game, "Full version of game required to use DLC for that game. Sold separately."[94][95] While this was not a confirmation that Downloadable Content would be coming to the game, many fans speculated on the likelihood before the game's release, increasing the overall excitement for the new game in the fanbase. The clause was removed from the website footer on April 13, 2023.[96] On September 6, 2023, Hidemaro Fujibayashi revealed that Nintendo has no plans to release Downloadable Content for Tears of the Kingdom.[97]

Trailers and Marketing
The announcement trailer shows Link and Zelda exploring an unknown subterranean Zonai Ruin. They arrive in a cavern where Ganondorf's body is held in suspended animation, gripped by a pale, ghostly hand. Ganondorf stirs amidst an earthquake, and the trailer then cuts to a view of Hyrule Castle from the Great Plateau. As the ground shakes, the Castle is seen rising into the air. Text is then displayed announcing the development of a sequel to Breath of the Wild.[87]
During the announcement of Age of Calamity on September 8, 2020, Eiji Aonuma said that Nintendo was still working on the game and that the fans would have to wait before getting any news. Later, in a December interview, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser added that the contents of the game would be shown when they felt they had enough to show.[98]
The second trailer and first gameplay showcase aired on June 15th, 2021, during the E3 2021 Nintendo Direct.[99] In the second trailer during E3 2021, gameplay footage showed Link skydiving and paragliding among landmasses floating in the sky. Link is seen battling various enemies, such as a Stone Talus carrying a Monster Stronghold. Link also wields new abilities which seemingly come from his altered right arm. The first is Recall, an ability that can move an Object backward on the path it came from. The second is Ascend, an ability that phases Link through a solid structure from underneath. The trailer concludes with scenes of Hyrule Castle being violently lifted from the ground by a huge mass of Malice.[99][100] An estimated release date for the game was also announced to be sometime during 2022.
On March 29, 2022, Nintendo released a video where Eiji Aonuma announced that development time had been extended, with the game being set to release in the spring of 2023. A short gameplay clip was premiered that showcased Link's new outfit and a heavily damaged Master Sword.[101]
The third trailer for the game was shown in the September 13, 2022 Nintendo Direct, where the title and release date, May 12, 2023, were revealed.[102] In the trailer, a large portrait similar to the Calamity Ganon Tapestry was shown depicting Soldiers fighting with Moblins and Bokoblins, an unknown figure surrounded by seven symbols, and a few people resembling Zelda and the corpse from the announcement trailer. Afterward, more gameplay footage shows Link pushing open a large door and jumping into a free fall. Next, Link jumps onto a large boulder traveling into the air, showing a giant storm forming nearby. Next, Link climbs up the root of a Tree sticking out of a floating rock. Finally, Link falls out of the sky above Hyrule and lands on a large, flying mechanism, which he appears to pilot. Nintendo UK did not livestream the Nintendo Direct as a mark of respect during the national period of mourning for Queen Elizabeth II.[103] Nintendo UK later acknowledged the announcement in a Twitter post on October 3rd.[104]
The fourth trailer for the game was shown in the February 8, 2023 Nintendo Direct. Many new mechanics, locations, and enemies were all shown during the trailer, and the release date of May 12, 2023 was reconfirmed.[105] The game was also opened for pre-orders on the Nintendo eShop which revealed the game to retail for $70 USD.[106] A Collector's Edition was also announced to be released on the same day. Finally, an amiibo of Link from the game was announced to also release on the same day.[89]
12 minutes of gameplay were showcased by Eiji Aonuma on Nintendo's YouTube channel, alongside an announcement for a Tears of the Kingdom-themed Nintendo Switch - OLED Model, as well as a themed Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and a Nintendo Switch carrying case.[107] It premiered on March 28, 2023.[108][109]
The fifth and final pre-launch trailer for Tears of the Kingdom premiered on YouTube on April 13, 2023.[110]

Audience Reception
The announcement of Tears of the Kingdom under the name "Sequel to Breath of the Wild" was celebrated by fans across the world as Breath of the Wild was one of the most popular games on the Nintendo Switch and was known throughout the gaming community, especially after winning the Game of the Year award at the 2017 Japan Game Awards.[118] Many fans speculated about whether Zelda would be a playable character and/or if multiplayer would be available, but when asked, Aonuma declined to answer.[119]
When the title of Tears of the Kingdom was revealed during the September 13, 2022 Nintendo Direct, many fans were unsure whether the name referred to tears as in crying, or tears as in rips.[120] Nintendo cleared up the confusion a few days later and confirmed that the name refers to tears as in crying.[121]
Sales
Tears of the Kingdom sold over 10 million copies on its first three days, becoming the fastest selling game in the series.[122] With over 4 million copies sold in America, it is also the fastest selling Nintendo Switch and Nintendo game overall in that territory.[123] As of June 2023, it is the second best-selling game of the year.[124] Tears of the Kingdom has sold a total of 22.56 million copies as of March 31, 2026.[125]

Awards
Tears of the Kingdom was nominated several times at The Game Awards and the Golden Joystick Awards for the most anticipated/wanted game category, but was beaten out by other games. The game won at both events in 2022, most likely due to a combination between the title of the game finally being announced which renewed excitement and for the release of Elden Ring, a heavy competitor against Tears of the Kingdom that was no longer present.[129]
After being released in 2023, Tears of the Kingdom was nominated for several awards at the Golden Joystick Awards, though it only won Nintendo Game of the Year.[130] Alongside Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Tears of the Kingdom was one of two Nintendo games nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards.[131]
Tears of the Kingdom won Game of the Year at IGN,[132] Game Informer,[133] EDGE,[134] and the Japan Game Awards 2024.[135]

- ↑
People have been falling ill after coming in contact with the gloom drifting through these caverns.
— Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
When I was a child, I asked my father if there was anything below the castle. He told me there was, though seeing it for ourselves or even discussing the matter was forbidden. No one in our family knew anything more than that. I can recall what my father said, even now. "No one must ever venture beneath the castle—not even one of us." He said this warning had been passed down through my family for as long as anyone could remember.
— Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
The Master Sword... It must be sensing something! I knew we had reason for concern. Ever since the end of the Calamity, the castle has fallen into neglect. But I never could have imagined anything like these tunnels were hiding here. We must be careful as we move deeper.
— Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
These are ruins from an ancient civilization. Wait... Something is written here. Might these ruins be...from the Zonai?
— Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
These carvings... I'm sure they're Zonai in origin. I've seen designs like this in my studies. The Zonai are said to have lived long ago, in the time of earliest legend. They possessed godlike powers and had a prosperous civilization in the sky. Many history books tell us about the Zonai, but none gives us the full picture. Much is still unknown about them.
— Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Is this what the Zonai looked like? They seem so different than us, and such large ears... How did the ruins from a civilization in the sky end up here beneath the castle? It looks like the path ahead goes even deeper. Let's continue, Link.
— Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Look at these murals... The written histories of the royal family... include stories of a great war fought long ago. It was a conflict between allied tribes and someone only ever referred to as the Demon King. Is it possible? Do these murals depict the same legend?
— Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
This is similar to the statues we saw earlier—a Zonai. And these figures look like Hylians. This depiction certainly suggests that the Zonai descended from the heavens. It is said that my ancestors—the first of Hyrule's royal family... were born from a union with gods who had descended from the heavens. These murals tell a similar story, and if they are accurate, then the gods mentioned were the Zonai... They must have forged a relationship with the Hylians of that time, working together to establish... the kingdom of Hyrule!
— Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
This figure... He seems to be stealing something of incredible power from the young kingdom. This all aligns with what I've read during my studies. And then this... It shows the Demon King! And a fierce battle against him. If the creature depicted here really does represent the Demon King, then... Incredible! This mural must be the great war recorded in the royal histories! This is the Imprisoning War and the events that led up to it!
— Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Link! This is a huge discovery! All right, then. Now to use this invention of Purah's. I'm glad I didn't leave it behind. It's so easy to record. You point it and click.
— Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Zelda... You, who carries that fragile sword... are Link.
— Demon King Ganondorf (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Rauru placed his faith in you... and that was all you could do?
— Demon King Ganondorf (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Ah, Link. Finally, you wake. I've heard a great deal about you from Zelda. Your wounds were severe... I am relieved to see you escape death. Your arm, however, was beyond saving. I had to replace it, lest the injury endanger you further.
— Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Decayed Master Sword
— Inventory (Tears of the Kingdom)
The sword that seals the darkness. Its sacred power has been diminished after being ravaged by the gloom beneath Hyrule Castle. - ↑
Link. I have waited for you. Princess Zelda left something for you in my care.
— Steward Construct (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
This is the Purah Pad. I am told it is an invaluable tool that will provide you with direction.
— Steward Construct (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
I received it from Princess Zelda. I have now passed it on to you. My records indicate that Princess Zelda is waiting at the location marked on its map. My message has been delivered.
— Steward Construct (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
[Where am I?] We stand in the Garden of Time. The Temple of Time is visible from here. It was used in the distant past. Many rites and ceremonies of the kingdom were held there. But no more. Now it is a lonely place. No one visits.
— Steward Construct (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
That door will only open to those with sufficient power...
— Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
I'm sorry—I did not intend to startle you. It was I that spoke to you earlier. That arm originally belonged to me. I am Rauru.
— Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
In any case, that arm should allow you to open this door. It seems to have lost the power to do so. You might be able to restore it, but you would need to enter a place filled with sacred light... Ah, of course. Why not visit the shrines on this island? The shrines... Yes, I am sure they are the key.
— Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
So you've made it here. This is a shrine of light. Long ago, I filled these places with light that purges evil. I believe this light will restore an ability your right arm has lost. Now then, extend your hand.
— Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
This is the Ultrahand ability. It allows you to move objects freely and attach them to other objects. With it, you will be able to build a great number of things. Really, anything you can imagine. Use Ultrahand, and receive the blessing from this shrine.
— Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
This is the Fuse ability. It allows you to fuse something nearby to your weapon or shield, thereby enhancing it. Why not pick up that sword just ahead and then fuse a nearby object to it? Use Fuse, and receive the blessing from this shrine.
— Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
This is the Ascend ability. It lets you travel through what's directly above you—to ascend through it and emerge on top of it. You'll find it quite useful in all sorts of places and situations. Use Ascend, and receive the blessing from this shrine.
— Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
You have done well to reach this place... We offer this light that will cleanse you of evil.
— Rauru and Sonia Statue (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
And Zelda has vanished as well... What you just saw... It's a mystery even to me. Perhaps it was a sort of echo—one that reflects her sheer will.
— Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
This door stands as a test of your own overall vitality. You remain in a weakened state. You're not yet strong enough to open it.
— Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
But...there is one more shrine on this island. There, you can get another blessing. If you add that to the other blessings you received at shrines and offer them all to the Goddess... you might just find your way forward after all.
— Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Though our time together has been brief, I am so happy that we finally met...
— Rauru (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
That settles it. I know you only just returned, Link... But I need you to meet with the search party up by Hyrule Castle. They've been searching tirelessly for you two.
— Purah (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
CAPTAIN! It's Princess Zelda!
— Toren (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
You saw that, too, Link? You saw Princess Zelda turn into light and...fly off...right?
— Hoz (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
We need to let Purah know about this as soon as possible!
— Hoz (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Since the princess flew off, maybe we should redirect our efforts and dig into the Upheaval.
— Purah (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Oh, right. I forgot that before we can look at your overall map of Hyrule... we need to add map data from right around Lookout Landing. And for THAT, we need our Skyview Tower.
— Purah (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
All of the Skyview Towers have now been activated!
— Josha (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Only thing is, you need a paraglider when you're scanning.
— Purah (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
The first report comes from Hebra to the northwest. Next up is Eldin to the northeast. The Gerudo are reporting trouble in the southwest. And finally, there's Lanayru to the east.
— Purah (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑ "The Upheaval has come to Hyrule
Embark on a perilous quest to find the missing princess and unravel the truth behind a cataclysmic event that has sent the kingdom into turmoil." — The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom , Nintendo UK, retrieved April 20, 2023. - ↑
Wow... So this is what was waiting for us in that huge cloud. This is the Stormwind Ark from the kids' song...
— Tulin (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
That monster you defeated, the source of that intense blizzard... It was summoned by the Demon King. He thought it could stop you from obtaining the stone you just found—my secret stone.
— Raphica (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Years ago, when the kingdom of Hyrule was still young... A great evil, the Demon King, descended on the land. He sought to wipe out anyone who opposed him.
— Raphica (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
But Rauru—the first king of Hyrule—requested my aid, as well as that of five other warriors. To help in the fight, Rauru entrusted us with amazing artifacts. Secret stones...objects that amplified our formidable abilities. I carried one into battle as the Sage of Wind. It was thrilling to fight alongside my fellow sages... Yet we were still no match for the Demon King's overwhelming power. His magic was staggering, and I was unable to slip past his defenses, no matter how hard I tried.
— Raphica (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
In the end, King Rauru realized that we would not be able to defeat the Demon King. To save our world, King Rauru sacrificed himself and sealed the Demon King away.
— Raphica (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
The rest of us survived that climactic battle, and I would soon receive a visitor with a request that would define the future of the Rito. It was another of the six sages—the Sage of Time.
— Raphica (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
The Demon King will return. The magic binding him will be undone. When that time comes, a noble swordsman named Link will oppose him. But Link will only succeed with the Rito's help. Summon the winds, and support this hero!
— Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Tulin, my brave fledgling... You must take up my secret stone and honor the Sage of Time's request. Fight the Demon King with the swordsman Link.
— Raphica (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Linky! Did you SEE that?! I was going to share that I saw a figure that looked an awful lot like Princess Zelda at Hyrule Castle! I wasn't sure at first, but now I am. I thought she'd left the castle entirely, but she was inside!
— Purah (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
We have to hurry and rescue her! The soldiers and I can't reach Hyrule Castle as it is now. You might be the only one who can do it. Ugh, I'm sorry, Link. I know I'm always throwing you into dangerous situations. But you really are the only one up to the task. Please, come back in one piece. That applies to both you and the princess. Got it?
— Purah (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Link... I am waiting... Waiting... Waiting for you...
— Phantom Ganon (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
At last... I have been waiting for you to arrive. Now, Link... There is something here I want to show you. What do you think? Hyrule Castle. Perfect and glorious. Does it awaken memories? Memories of our time here? Well, really take in every detail... After all, this place... will be the last thing you ever see.
— Phantom Ganon (Tears of the Kingdom)The fabled swordsman who endured my corruption... Who has persisted in slaughtering my servants... Interesting... How is it that you survived my attack? It must have been that wretched arm. No matter. You will not live to see another sunrise. Did my puppet entertain you? She made it so easy to mislead you—to keep you occupied... But such an indirect approach is no longer needed. End this hero's life, my dark servant. Cut him down.
— Demon King Ganondorf (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Link! We are here!
— Sidon (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
I seeee. So, to summarize... There's no mistaking that what you all saw at Hyrule Castle was the Demon King from the legend of the Imprisoning War. And the princess you've been seeing was actually an impostor! And the reason she appeared at Hyrule Castle was so the Demon King could lure Link into a trap...
— Purah (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
So King Rauru and the six sages fought the Demon King in the Imprisoning War.
— Purah (Tears of the Kingdom)
Princess Zelda was one of those people—the Sage of Time.
There are the five sages we know of—wind, fire, water, lightning, and time. That leaves one more... There must be a clue to all of this somewhere.
I think it's worth revisiting the ruins from the age of legends to see what we can find. - ↑
Link, when we put together the script on this stone slab and translate it... We get definite mentions of the Sage Mineru, the Demon King, and someone with the same name as Princess Zelda. Something related to all three of them must be waiting at the Zonai Ruins in southeast Hyrule!
— Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
But that still leaves us with the other part—"Offer a Zonai charge to the altar at the tail."What is a Zonai charge? And this altar at the tail... Where do we start looking for it? Could another tall dragon pillar be marking the altar site, just like the others you've found?
— Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
A mechanism in the ancient ruins got rid of the thunderclouds and revealed some new sky islands?
— Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Link... Zelda's chosen protector...
— Mineru (Tears of the Kingdom)
Take this. Follow the light. - ↑
My name is Mineru. I am the Sage of Spirit. I am happy you have arrived. At last we can speak with each other. Unfortunately, I no longer have a body... Without a physical form, we cannot yet speak face-to-face. But...do you see the four storehouses in the area? I would ask you to visit each of them and assemble a body for me.
— Mineru (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
The sword that seals the darkness—the Master Sword—is our strongest weapon in the campaign against the Demon King. Zelda vowed to restore the blade. I have no doubt that it is somewhere in Hyrule. Seek the sacred tree of this era, which you know as the Deku Tree. Zelda intended for you to meet with him when you were ready to reclaim the Master Sword.
— Mineru (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
We managed to restrain him somehow... But, Link... I am not sure you'll be able to stop him.
— Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
The Master Sword... How is...the Master Sword... You're telling me...that Link is safe? You traveled through time to find me and recover your strength.
— Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
I know why I am here. It's...something only I can do. We will finally stop him.
— Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑ 70.0 70.1
After leaving the Purah Pad in Mineru's care, Zelda swallows the secret stone, holding a hope for Link's future in her heart. As bright light washes over her, Zelda transforms into the Light Dragon, roaring as she ascends into the sky. Tears fall from her eyes and rain from the heavens as the Light Dragon vanishes into an expanse of clouds.
— Adventure Log (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Link. I will restore the Master Sword for you. I will care for it until the time comes. I will pour my sacred power into it. It will be the weapon that defeats the Demon King!
— Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
You found the Master Sword with the white dragon soaring the skies. The legendary sword that seals the darkness has returned to your hand, along with Zelda's wish.
— Adventure Log (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
You found the Sage of Spirit?! M-Mineru? This... Is... Incredible! That means we have the five sages! Fantastic work, Link! I can't believe this is actually one of the sages who faced off against the Demon King alongside Princess Zelda...
— Purah (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
No matter which way I enter the Lost Woods, the fog comes and gets me, and then I'm right back at the beginning... It's covering the entire woods, so there's no way to go without the fog getting me...
— Peeks (Tears of the Kingdom)
I can't return to Korok Forest like this. I want to go home...
I did hear that a big hole opened up in Minshi Woods. I wonder if my friends who went to check it out are OK... - ↑
Sorry. Let me gather my thoughts here.
— Purah (Tears of the Kingdom)
I can't think of anywhere on the surface he might be, but the Depths...that seems likely. Although we can't be too certain...
I'll leave it to you to head up the search.
That said, if you're investigating the Depths, ask Josha for help.
I'm sure she'll have useful information for you. - ↑
Yes, where the end of all things will begin! In the deepest reaches of the Depths... Far beneath Hyrule Castle!
— Master Kohga (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
With this, preparations are complete. Now our target is the deepest reaches of the Depths—beneath Hyrule Castle!
— Purah (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
The power of a sage cannot reach you.
— N/A (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
We are fated to fight these beasts!
— The Sages (TotK)
Don't worry about us!
Link! We'll take care of this, goro!
You ready to see the power of a sage?!
We'll be fine! We already beat them once!
This'll be a breeze for sure!
It is time, Link.
The rest is up to you! - ↑
How disappointing...
— Ganondorf (Tears of the Kingdom)
This world should be shrouded in darkness, not bathed in insufferable light.
All these weak, peace-loving cowards running rampant...
It would have been more...satisfying to overcome a worthy foe.
Regardless... I will reshape this world as it was meant to be.
I will crush any opposition. I will rule.
That is what a king must do.
Do not look away.
You witness a king's revival.
And the birth of his new world! - ↑
My body... My mind... Everything!
— Ganondorf (Tears of the Kingdom)
I'll sacrifice it all to destroy you...
and cast this world into eternal night! - ↑
This is only a theory, but...
— Mineru (Tears of the Kingdom)
Rauru's power of light and Sonia's time power...
For Zelda to transform back, they both must have channeled their abilities through you, Link. - ↑
He's gone... The Demon King...
— Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom)
I'm not in a dream, right?
You did it.
Oh, Link, you really did it! - ↑
I know I can move on—join Rauru and the others—and the world will be safe.
