This article is about the Runes from Breath of the Wild. For the manga character, see Rūn. For the abilities in Tears of the Kingdom, see Ancient Power.

Runes,(BotWBreath of the Wild | HWAoCHyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity)[1][name references needed] also known as Sheikah Runes,(HWAoCHyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity)[2] are recurring abilities added to the Sheikah Slate in The Legend of Zelda series. Runes go unnamed in Tears of the Kingdom.

Location and Uses

Breath of the Wild

Runes are special objects controlled by the Sheikah Slate that can affect the world around Link. Runes are obtained from Guidance Stones, primarily in Ancient Shrines on the Great Plateau, as well as in the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab. To obtain a Rune, Link must insert the Sheikah Slate into a pedestal to extract them.[1] Upon extraction, Link can access that Rune's abilities by pressing the L Button and selecting the Rune.

Although they are not strictly interactive abilities, other features of the Sheikah Slate are also described as Basic Runes,[3][4] namely the Camera, Hyrule Compendium, Album,[5] Sheikah Sensor,[6] and Sheikah Sensor +.[7] These Basic Runes were the only Runes known 100 years prior,[5] and were damaged in the time being, but Purah discovered the existence of others, unbeknownst to her available in the Ancient Shrines, in ancient texts while Link was recovering in the Shrine of Resurrection.[8] Additionally, Purah herself created an anti-aging Rune to use on her own self-made Sheikah Slate.[9]

While Link was recovering, Purah researched how to upgrade Runes.[10] Link can upgrade the Stasis, Remote Bomb, and Sheikah Sensor Runes into the Stasis +, Remote Bomb +, and Sheikah Sensor + Runes respectively by providing Purah with Ancient Materials.[11]

The Master Cycle Zero is accessible alongside the other Runes and functions similarly, though it is unclear if it actually is considered one.[12]

Tears of the Kingdom

The four ability Runes featured on the Sheikah Slate in Breath of the Wild do not appear in Tears of the Kingdom, having been functionally replaced by new Ancient Powers used by the Right Arm. However, the basic Runes from the former reappear as features of the Purah Pad: the Camera, Hyrule Compendium, Album, and Sensor/Sensor +, though they are not explicitly described as "Runes". The amiibo Ability also returns as an Ancient Power accessed through the Right Arm rather than the Purah Pad.

Trivia

  • If Link manages to reach the goal of any of the first four Ancient Shrines without obtaining its Rune, the Sheikah Monk will instruct him to go back and extract it from the Guidance Stone before being able to complete the Shrine.[13]
