Biography

Tears of the Kingdom

In the Era of Foundation, Agraston was the Goron Sage of Fire and one of the Six Sages.[6] He was a leader to the Gorons, and during the Imprisoning War, he fought alongside the King of Hyrule, Rauru, as a Sage.[10][11]

Agraston can be seen in the Forgotten Temple during the Memory "The Sages' Vow". When Rauru reveals the room containing the Secret Stones, Agraston recognizes them.[12] Rauru grants the four remaining Stones to Agraston, Raphica, Qia, and Ardi, intending to increase their power before facing Demon King Ganondorf.[10][13] Agraston's Stone turns into a Secret Stone of Fire, and he becomes the Sage of Fire. Once this is done, the Six Sages make a vow of loyalty to Rauru.[14]

Agraston during the Imprisoning War

In flashbacks to the Imprisoning War, Agraston wields a Boulder Breaker. Despite their strength, Rauru and the Sages were unable to overcome Demon King Ganondorf, and Agraston appears wounded by Gloom during the Memory "The Imprisoning War".[15] To distract the Demon King, the Sages throw their Weapons toward him, which Princess Zelda returns to them using Recall. This allows Rauru to get closer to Ganondorf, and he subsequently sacrifices himself to seal the Demon King away.[15] The Sage of Fire witnesses this event.

Following the Imprisoning War, Zelda came to visit Agraston at the Fire Temple.[16] She warned that Demon King Ganondorf would one day break free from his seal, and she asked him to ensure the Gorons would support Link when the time comes to oppose him.[17] As a result, he vowed that a new Sage of Fire will awaken when the Demon King returns and fight alongside Link.[18] Afterwards, during the Memory "Tears of the Dragon", Agraston can be seen with the Raphica, Qia, and Ardi, watching as the Light Dragon disappears into the Sky.

Throughout the Main Quest "Yunobo of Goron City", Yunobo and Link hear Agraston's voice calling to them from the Depths.[19][20] Once they reach the Fire Temple, Agraston instructs them to ring the Gongs to release the five Locks, which will allow them to access the Temple's innermost chamber.[21] After Marbled Gohma has been defeated, a Secret Stone will appear before them.[22] When Yunobo touches it, Agraston appears before them, introducing himself as Yunobo's ancestor.[6] He expresses his pride in Yunobo's Power of Fire, and he reveals that Demon King Ganondorf sent Marbled Gohma to prevent Yunobo from finding his Secret Stone.[23] Hearing Yunobo's confusion, the Sage proceeds to tell him the story of the Imprisoning War.[24]

Following his retelling, Agraston warns that, although Goron City has been saved, Demon King Ganondorf still poses a threat to all of Hyrule.[25] Therefore, he asks Yunobo to honor the vow he made to Princess Zelda and fight alongside Link, at which point he disappears.[26]

Agraston is the Goron Chief and an old friend of Rauru, the King of Hyrule. He is an intellectual and calm leader.[9]

At some point following Zelda's arrival to Ancient Hyrule, Agraston is summoned to the Ancient Hyrule Castle's Audience Chamber. There, he receives a Divine Helm from Rauru.

Trivia

  • The existence of Agraston in Tears of the Kingdom was accidentally leaked by Pietro Ubaldi, who is the Italian voice actor for both Agraston and Daruk. He described Agraston as an ancestor to Daruk.[27]
  • Agraston is the only one of the ancient Sages in Tears of the Kingdom to lack a modeled face beneath his Divine Helm.

Nomenclature

Agraston's name is derived from the Acasta Gneiss, a geological complex located in Canada which is the source of the earliest known rocks on Earth, and possibly the word stone. His name follows the same pattern as his fellow Sages Raphica, Qia, and Ardi being named for the earliest known specimens of what they are based on.
