Biography

Ocarina of Time

Main article: Nabooru

The Sage of Spirit is a member of the Six Sages, who are chosen by a voice from the Sacred Realm whenever it is threatened.[3] An ancient Sage of Spirit helped Rauru and the other Sages construct the Temple of Time during the Era of Chaos.[4] When Link awakens from his seven-year slumber, Rauru tasks him with finding the new Sages and helping awaken them.[5]

When Link returns to the Spirit Temple as an adult, he faces a unique Iron Knuckle near the Temple's end. Upon defeating the Iron Knuckle, it is revealed to be Nabooru, who was brainwashed by Koume and Kotake. She is confused at first, but then Koume and Kotake reappear with the intent of brainwashing her again.[6] Nabooru attempts to flee, but she is struck by spells and disappears.

Once Twinrova has been defeated, Nabooru will appear before Link in the Chamber of Sages. She thanks Link for his help, noting how much he has grown since their encounter seven years prior.[7] While she is regretful for carrying out Ganondorf's orders while she was brainwashed, Nabooru is eager to fight against him and get revenge now that she has awakened as the Sage of Spirit.[8] Acknowledging Link as the Hero of Time, Nabooru grants him a piece of her power in the form of the Spirit Medallion.[9][10]

Alongside the other Six Sages, Nabooru creates the Rainbow Bridge, which allows Link to access Ganon's Castle.[11] After Link destroys the Spirit Barrier in the Spirit Room, Nabooru appears and tells him to hurry.[12] Upon defeating Ganon, Nabooru and the other Sages combine their power to seal him in the Evil Realm.[13] During the Credits, Nabooru can be seen traveling to Death Mountain with Saria, Darunia, Princess Ruto, and Impa. The group looks over Hyrule together, and Nabooru and Ruto share a look with each other.

Twilight Princess

The Sage of Spirit is one of the Six Sages that reside in the Mirror Chamber, where they guard the Mirror of Twilight at the command of the Golden Goddesses.[14] The Sage of Spirit was present at the Failed Execution of Ganondorf, witnessing the murder of the Sage of Water and assisting in banishing Ganondorf to the Twilight Realm.

After Link and Midna reach the Mirror Chamber, the remaining Sages appear before them, including the Sage of Spirit.[15] Alongside the Sage of Forest and the Sage of Light, the Sage of Spirit explains that the Mirror of Twilight was shattered by Zant, who was using Ganondorf's dark power.[16][17] Since Zant is not the true ruler of the Twili, however, he was not able to completely destroy the Mirror, and the Sages reveal that the Mirror Shards are located in the Snowpeak Ruins, the Temple of Time, and the City in the Sky.[18] While they believe that Link will be able to gather the Shards, they warn him about the dangerous power within them.[19]

When the Mirror of Twilight is repaired, the Sage of Spirit and the other Sages appear before Link and Midna again. They blame themselves for the destruction and chaos that Ganondorf has brought to the Twilight Realm.[20] They also acknowledge Midna as the true ruler of the Twili, and they ask for her forgiveness.[21]

Tears of the Kingdom

Main article: Mineru

The Secret Stone of Spirit

In Tears of the Kingdom, the Sage of Spirit is Mineru, whose power has been amplified due to her possessing the Secret Stone of Spirit. This has given her the ability to separate her own Spirit from her body.[22] During the Imprisoning War, which took place in the Era of Foundation, Mineru and the other Six Sages fought alongside the King of Hyrule, her brother Rauru, in an effort to subdue Demon King Ganondorf. In the Memory "The Imprisoning War", Mineru can be seen collapsing as a result of her exposure to the Demon King's Gloom.[23] As part of Princess Zelda's plan to assist Link in the distant future, Mineru imparts her Spirit in the Purah Pad, where she remains dormant for thousands of years.[24]

During the Main Quest "Find the Fifth Sage", Link is tasked with locating and awakening the missing Sage of Spirit.[25] After he finds the Zonai Relic on Dragonhead Island, Mineru begins to speak to Link, guiding him to the Construct Factory as part of "Guidance from Ages Past".[26] Once they arrive, Mineru formally introduces herself as the Sage of Spirit, and she requests that Link build a new body for her with pieces from throughout the Factory.[27] Mineru's Construct allows her to fight alongside Link, and her next goal is to recover her Secret Stone from the Spirit Temple.[28] Upon defeating the Seized Construct, Mineru's Spirit leaves the Purah Pad for the Secret Stone of Spirit, which embeds itself within her Construct. She then appears before Link and makes the Vow of Mineru, Sage of Spirit, wherein she swears to serve him as a Sage.[29] This allows Link to summon Mineru's Constuct.[30]

As the Sage of Spirit, Mineru appears to fight alongside Link and any other awakened Sages when he faces the Demon King's Army at Gloom's Origin.[31] However, they are separated when a magical copy of the Seized Construct appears, which Mineru stays behind to defeat.[32][33] She later rejoins Link while he faces Demon King Ganondorf,[34] but she and the other Sages are knocked out by a wave of Gloom.

In the post-Credits scene, Mineru leaves her Construct body and guides Link, Zelda, Purah, and the other Sages through the Temple of Time on the Great Sky Island. When they reach the altar behind the Temple, Mineru expresses that she wanted to show them the view of Hyrule.[35] She starts to fade away, and she realizes it is time for her to move on.[36] Although Zelda is saddened by this, Mineru explains that with Demon King Ganondorf defeated, she is no longer needed in the modern era.[37] After the remaining Sages make a vow to Zelda, Mineru promises to share this information, as well as how much Zelda cares, with Rauru and Sonia.[38] She thanks them all before disappearing, leaving her Construct inactive in front of the Temple of Time.[39]
