Woodcutting
Woodcutting is a recurring ability in The Legend of Zelda series.(TotKTears of the Kingdom)[1] Woodcutting goes unnamed in Breath of the Wild.
Overview
Breath of the Wild
Woodcutting can be performed by attacking Trees with either a One-Handed or Two-Handed Weapon that is sharp. Axes are the most effective Weapons. Doing so enough times will cause the Tree to break into a Log and fall in the opposite direction of Link. Palm Trees break into unique Logs known as Palm-Tree Logs. Attacking Logs further will split them into several pieces of Wood.
Prior to completing all four Ancient Shrines on the Great Plateau, Link can encounter the Old Man cutting down a Cedar Tree near his Cabin. When asked about what he is doing, the Old Man explains that he wanted to collect Wood from it. Since controlling where Logs fall can be difficult, he advises Link to face in the direction he wants it to land while Woodcutting.[2] If Link has a Woodcutter's Axe in his Inventory, the Old Man will then invite him to take over Woodcutting while he takes a break.[3] During the night, the Old Man stops Woodcutting so he can rest at a nearby Campfire.
Tears of the Kingdom
Like in Breath of the Wild, Link can Woodcut by attacking a Tree with a sharp Weapon, with Axes being particularly effective. Trees in the Depths are also capable of producing Logs when attacked. Additionally, Woodcutting is the method by which Evermeans can be defeated.[4]
On the Great Sky Island, a Maker Construct can be found cutting down Trees southwest of the Ukouh Shrine. When approached by Link, it asks if he has come to Woodcut as well.[5] It then explains the process of Woodcutting to him, as well as several ways to use Logs.[1] The Maker Construct also allows Link to use a nearby Stone Axe if he is interested in Woodcutting.[6] Should Link chop down a Tree in front of this Construct, it will commend his form and ask for his assistance.[7][8] After the Time Bell rings at 7:00 PM, it stops Woodcutting for the day and proceeds to rest at a nearby charging spot.[9][10]

Woodcutting is the practice of chopping down trees to create logs. Logs can be combined to assemble platforms. You can also chop them down further to make wood. Lumber has many uses. That is why I come here daily to chop wood. And yet I still find it difficult to chop them down in the intended direction. That is why you may have heard me muttering to myself. "Fix your gaze forward. Face it head on."

[What are you doing?] I thought this tree here would make for some good firewood. However...getting a tree to fall exactly where you want it to is quite an art. The trick is to turn your hips so that they face where you want the tree to land.

So... I see you found my axe. Why not help me out and give it a few swings? I'm working up quite a sweat here...but these bones could use a break.

These tree-mimicking creatures hate fire. Blunt weapons won't do much against them; just like with real trees, an axe is called for here. - ↑
Hm? Pardon me. I was absorbed in my woodcutting. Are you here for woodcutting too?

Ah. I apologize. I have been rambling for some time. There is an axe I no longer need over there. It is yours to use if you want to do some woodcutting.

I witnessed your woodcutting technique just now. It was very well done.

[It was nothing.] Such modesty! Your technique is impressive enough that I would appreciate your assistance. That is assuming you have the time to spare.

Oh my. Where has the time gone? I did not even notice the time bell ringing. It is time I rested for today.

Tomorrow I will resume woodcutting. I am resting until then. I will return to work once the morning-time bell rings.
