Well, I for one am still willing to wait another year or two to see if Despera gets released. It won't have Nakamura, but it'd be an understatement to say it'd be influenced by him as if he were directing it, no matter who ends up in that role. The only reason for Despera's existence is as a spiritual successor to Lain, after all- to recreate that magic, and the creators are likely to be very sensitive to that fact.

Chiaki Konaka is doing the script for the live action movie, i don't know if he will also write for the live action TV series (I hope so!), and probably not for the manga since it's a guy called Uni.
On the damnedmaster website, Konaka explain that "Shisho series" has new standards for horror stories and he found that interesting. He is trying to maintain some nuances in his writing, but that seems really difficult.

Much as I'd love to +1 this, the real reasons are probably a bit different. Few people appreciate their minds getting blown by this kind of works, indeed. Favours have shifted. But that problem aside, there's a question of "monetary worth", which is a combination of: production costs and sales. With lots of crappy stuff produced with a click of a button, works that require attention to detail and great personal involvment do not stand a chance as long as you count the production cost and time. And then the "short attention span of the audience" kicks in.
IMHO, it is only natural that the three authors went into "private mode". I'm not following the other two, but ABe looks like he's totally switched to gadgets, photography and quite sketchy "Lushika, Lushika" manga.
Maybe it's good that this fantastic union did not last long enough to start rotting.
