This title is fictional… twice! Meaning that it is actually an anime within an anime! It is a fictional title, made exclusively for the Genshiken franchise. I strongly urge you NOT TO WATCH Kujibiki if you haven’t watched the first season of Genshiken .
ART SECTION: 5/10 [What is she doing with his mushroom???]
Animation-wise, it is plain terrible! The characters are drawn simply, with a very SD feling to them. Yet their SD look is excused as being “more cartoonish than the Genshiken characters”. Because, from their point of view, they live in a fictional world that is simpler than Genshiken.
Moe-wise, the are great! If you have watched and liked Genshiken , then you probably like them as well. They are cute-looking and make several ero and scat jokes.
SOUND SECTION: 6/10 [Kami-sama, what am I hearing???]
Voice-acting is relaxed and too squeky, in order to fit the SD characters. I don’t like squeky voices, but at least they are excused in such a series.
Music… well… the music… If you don’t apreciate J-pop, please skip the intro. Because it packs a song that only true otakus will like. The rest of the music themes are nothing much. But the intro… EEK! I don’t like J-pop and yet this beaty, fruity, bizarre piece of music kinda sticks to your brain.
Anyway, the sound section is too high-pitched and silly but it fits the atmosphere of the series. But it is nothing great in all.
STORY SECTION: 2/10 [Editing reaches new heights!]
No story. Just unrelated, silly school adventures. Supposed, there was a whole series but we only see these few episodes as short clips throughout the Genshiken series. And supposed, they DID make a complete series afterwards, based on a manga. But here, you get nothing clear.
CHARACTER SECTION: 4/10 [How cute! … Who are they?]
Just like the story, the characters are explained much more in the “core” series rather than here. It is basically a cast of queer students within a parody / ecchi premise. Totally vague and rashly developed, they will make no sense to you… At least they are cute and/or sexy…
VALUE SECTION: 4/10 [An anime that popped out of the television world, into another television world!]
It gets some points for being an anime created out of Genshiken but it doesn’t deserve more than one watch. It is just a scrambled line of disjoined scenes.
ENJOYMENT SECTION: 3/10 [Enjoy what?]
Nah, it is plain stupid; a trick to milk the Genshiken fans with zero effort. It is nothing original or really funny as a stand alone; you can watch the entire episodes within the core series… Where it is much funnier.
VERDICT: 4/10
What kind of montage did they do here? They practically left nothing!
SUGGESTION LIST
Kujibiki Unbalance (2006) Practically, a more complete remake. Ain’t something good though.
Genshiken The core series.
Gekiganger 3 Another “anime within an anime”.
