Japan is outside the EU roaming zone, and roaming there on a UK or EU plan usually means a daily fee or a small data pass that runs out by the second day. Public Wi-Fi exists but is patchy outside hotels and big stations, which is why so many visitors queue at the airport to rent a pocket Wi-Fi router.

Good to know
- Turn on data roaming
- Once you land, switch data roaming on for the Aynet line. It costs nothing extra: the plan is the price. Keep roaming off on your home SIM so it does not charge you.

- Hotspot
- The networks do not state hotspot support for these plans, so we do not promise it. If you need to share data with a laptop or a travel companion, check with us before you buy.

Questions travellers ask
Does my EU or UK roaming work in Japan?
Not for free. Japan is outside the EU roaming zone, so most home plans charge a daily fee or sell a small data pass there. A Japan eSIM gives you local data at a fixed price instead.
Is an eSIM better than renting a pocket Wi-Fi in Japan?
For one person, usually yes: there is no device to charge, carry or return, and no deposit. A pocket Wi-Fi can still make sense for a group sharing one connection, since hotspot support on these plans is not confirmed.
Which network will I be on in Japan?
One of the Japanese networks listed on this page. Your phone picks the one with the best signal where you are and can switch as you move.
Is there 5G in Japan?
Yes, where the networks have built it, mostly in the big cities. Elsewhere you get 4G. You need a 5G phone to use it.
When should I install the eSIM?
Before you fly, on Wi-Fi at home. On nearly every Japan plan installing does not start the plan; the days start when your phone first connects in Japan.
Do I get a Japanese phone number?
No. The eSIM carries data only. Your own SIM stays in the phone for calls, texts and bank verification codes, and apps like WhatsApp and LINE work over the data.
What if I run out of data?
Top up the same eSIM from My eSIMs while the plan is running. No new QR code, and the price is shown before you pay.
Can I get a refund?
Yes, if the eSIM has never been installed. Once it is installed on a phone it cannot be refunded, because the profile is tied to that device.
