Kevin M. Moore (Florida)
Kevin M. Moore is a federal judge with the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He joined the court in 1992 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush (R). He served as chief judge from 2014 to 2021. Prior to appointment, Moore was the Director of the U.S. Marshals Service.[1]
Early life and education
A native Floridian, Moore graduated from Florida State University with his bachelor's degree in 1972 and later graduated from the Fordham University School of Law with his J.D. in 1976.[1]
Professional career
In 1976, Moore joined the US Attorney's Office and had a long career working with the US Department of Justice. First, Moore became an Assistant US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida from 1976 to 1981, then became the Supervisory Assistant US Attorney administering personnel matters for the Northern District of Florida from 1981 to 1982. In 1983, Moore was promoted as Chief Assistant US Attorney for the Northern District of Florida leading a team of Assistant Federal prosecutors from 1983 to 1987 when in 1987 Moore was nominated by President Ronald Reagan as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida from 1987 to 1989. In 1989, Moore was nominated by President George H.W. Bush as Director of the U.S. Marshals Service for the United States Department of Justice from 1989 to 1992.[1]
Judicial career
Southern District of Florida
On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Connie Mack III, Moore was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida by President George H.W. Bush on October 4, 1991 to a seat vacated by Eugene Spellman as Spellmann died while in Judicial Service. Moore was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on February 6, 1992 on a Senate vote and received commission on February 10, 1992.[1]
