Sports news from The Baylor Lariat.

The last time third-seeded Baylor men’s tennis hosted the Big 12 Championships was in 2021. It won with a dominant 4-0 sweep over Texas in the final. Hosting again this year, the Bears (21-9, 6-2) will look to repeat their success, facing off against No. 6-seed Arizona State in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m. Friday at the Hurd Tennis Center.

With a Tuesday night win over UT Arlington, the Bears (23-13, 6-9 Big 12) officially exceeded the win totals from the previous two seasons under Thomson (20 and 22, respectively). But after exploding for 18 runs on Saturday against Texas Tech, more than the team had scored in its previous six games combined, a 5-0 lead vanished on Sunday and the green and gold dropped their fourth Big 12 series.

JJ White is a strong passer and finisher, leading the Summit League with 4.0 assists per game and shooting 53.9% from inside the arc, the highest mark among Omaha’s top six scorers. He’ll likely play a similar off-ball offensive role to Jayden Nunn, but with much stronger playmaking chops. He can navigate both pick-and-roll and set play settings.

Auburn rising sophomore Yuting Deng, who reportedly held 50 offers when she entered the transfer portal, chose Baylor over others like UConn and Notre Dame Sunday night, according to multiple reports. The 6-foot guard joins Oklahoma rising senior forward Kiersten Johnson and North Dakota rising junior forward Kiera Pemberton as April additions.

Stringing together hits and defensive miscues by UTSA, Baylor softball’s offense drove in six runs in the first three innings, pushing them past the Roadrunners 6-0 on Wednesday at Getterman Stadium.
