Delayed Justice

GIVEAWAY
PUTMAN, CARA
DELAYED JUSTICE

She had given up the desire to be loved. Now she only needed to be heard.

Jaime Nichols went to law school to find the voice she never had as a child, and her determination to protect girls and women in the path of harm drives her in ways both spoken and unspoken. As Jaime, now a criminal defense attorney, prepares to press charges against someone who wronged her long ago, she must face not only her demons but also the unimaginable forces that protect the powerful man who tore her childhood apart.

Military veteran Chandler Bolton is tasked with helping a young victim who must testify in court -- and along with his therapy dog, Aslan, he's up for the job. When he first meets aime, all brains, beauty, and brashness, he can't help but be intrigued. As Chandler works to break through the wall Jaime has built around herself, the two of them discover that they may have more to offer one another than they ever could have guessed -- and that together, they may be able to help this endangered child.

This thrilling installment of the HIdden Justice series explores the healing power of resolution and the weight of words given voice. And as Jaime pursues delayed justice of her own, she unearths eternal truths that will change the course of her life.

My Review:

"God is always there. Even when we can't see Him. When He seems most hidden, He is most present. I've found in those moments He is closer than my breath. I have to choose whether to see Him, but He's there." (p 167)

A powerfully moving story filled with inspiration, compassion and hope. So much more than a thrilling suspense or captivating romance -- though there are elements of both in Delayed Justice. This is the kind of read you feel your way through. The kind that leaves you with an ache in your heart and the desire to lean closer into the Lord. And I so appreciate the faith elements in this story! It brings light to the darkness of some really tough subject matter. And there are so many quotable quotes that I think I must have copied half of the book into my inspirations journal!

"Was God pursuing her through friends who brought Him into routine conversations?" (p 232)

Yes, Jaime, God is pursuing you in the most marvelous way. Christian friends come along side her during the biggest battle of her life -- including her neighbour, Chandler. He's a family counselor at the Vet Center with a therapy dog named Aslan. Seriously -- how can you not love a hero who names his golden retriever Aslan?! I did some serious  Lion, Witch and Wardrobe fan-girling during my reading too -- thanks to Chandler. He's a military vet who has dealt with his own kind of trauma and feels called to help others deal with theirs.

"Father, I need You to show me what to do. Would You restrain me from doing too much? Help me to obey your prompting without overstepping my position and pretending I can do what only You can do." (p 152)

Brought together to help a traumatized little girl, Jaime and Chandler begin a complicated relationship. There are so many layers to their personal stories and their romance. And then there are two suspense plots and the legal angle which builds to this incredible moment of triumph that brought me to tears. She did it! Jaime found her voice and fought her fight and it felt so good!

A stunning addition to Putman's Hidden Justice series! I want more!!!!!!

My Review:

Honestly, I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying this Hidden Justice series by Cara Putman. I just read the first book a month ago and am definitely on the legal suspense bandwagon now. It's a totally different kind of mystery and investigation but just as riveting. And while I don't know a lot about the legal system, I feel like the author writes for readers like me. Which means the legal lingo and court scenes don't get so technical that she loses me. I might not completely understand everything, but I get enough for the story to make sense.

And then there's the romance. Emilie and Reid. Awesome dynamcis between these two. Edgy at first. A personal relationship is difficult to start in the midst of tragedy and they are both dealing with issues around Kaylene's death. Ironically, both are weighed down by guilt.  Emilie because she feels like she missed something as the woman's lawyer and Reid because he wasn't the kind of big brother his sister would confide in.

Then there's the complications of trying to solve a case the police don't think exists. There are so many layers to the suspense -- including a secondary one that kept me on the edge of my seat. Putman cleverly draws it all out with measured pacing. The kind of plot that grabs a hold of you right from the start and doesn't let you go...even after you reach the end. Now I am anxious for the next book in the series -- which I believe has been set up in this one. At least, I'm hoping it's Caroline's turn next.

Oh -- and I love the title tie-in by the way. Definitely sums up the plot of this thrilling suspense.

My thanks to Thomas Nelson and Litfuse Publicity Group for providing me with a copy of this book.

Beyond Justice

GIVEAWAY
PUTMAN, CARA
BEYOND JUSTICE

Hayden is on track to become the youngest partner in her prestigious DC law firm...if the case she's just been handed doesn't destroy her first.

Hayden McCarthy knows firsthand the pain that follows when justice is not served. It's why she became an attorney and why she's so driven in her career. When she's assigned a wrongful death case against the government, she isn't sure if it's the lucky break she needs to secure a partnership -- or an attempt to make sure she never gets there.

Further complicating matters is Andrew Wesley, her roommate's distractingly attractive cousin. But Andrew's father is a congressman, and Hayden's currently taking on the government. Could the timing be any worse?

The longer she keeps the case active, the higher the stakes become. Unknown enemies seem determined to kill the case -- or her. Logic and self-preservation indicate she should close the case. But how can she, when justice is still just beyond her reach?

My Review:

I think I'm going to have to stop saying I'm not into legal thrillers because this is the second one in as many weeks that totally floored me. The legal backdrop brings an interesting edge to the suspense as does the Washington political scene. What a gnarly, twisted mess it all is!

And Hayden's smack in the middle after she lands an intriguing case at the same time an equally intriguing man enters the picture and I don't know which thrilled me more. Well, maybe Andrew gets my vote as most thrilling. :-) He's interested, she's not, they both have complicated lives...the perfect foundation to start a lasting relationship, right? Plus Adam is a dog person. You can't go wrong with a hero who has a dog.

The suspense builds from seemingly unrelated incidents and I love the way the author pulls all the pieces together. Slow, deliberate, evenly paced 'aha' moments until the frantic breakneck speed to the finish line! Kept me glued to the page, anxious to figure it all out.

A great cast of secondary characters -- particularly some up and coming lawyer friends of Hayden's -- bring depth to the story. Loved Emilie, Andrew's cousin and Hayden's roommate, and am excited because the next book in the Hidden Justice series is about her -- look for Imperfect Justice in December. I will be!

Where Treetops Glisten

GIVEAWAY

GOYER, TRICIA
PUTMAN, CARA
SUNDIN, SARAH
WHERE TREETOPS GLISTEN

The crunch of newly fallen snow, the weight of wartime
Siblings forging new paths and finding love in three stories,
filled with the wonder of Christmas

Turn back the clock to a different time, listen to Bing Crosby sing of sleigh bells in the snow, as the realities of America’s involvement in the Second World War change the lives of the Turner family in Lafayette, Indiana.

In Cara Putman’s White Christmas, Abigail Turner is holding down the Home Front as a college student and a part-time employee at a one-of-a-kind candy shop. Loss of a beau to the war has Abigail skittish about romantic entanglements—until a hard-working young man with a serious problem needs her help.

Abigail’s brother Pete is a fighter pilot hero returned from the European Theater in Sarah Sundin’s I’ll Be Home for Christmas, trying to recapture the hope and peace his time at war has eroded. But when he encounters a precocious little girl in need of Pete’s friendship, can he convince her widowed mother that he’s no longer the bully she once knew?

In Tricia Goyer’s Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Meredith Turner, “Merry” to those who know her best, is using her skills as a combat nurse on the frontline in the Netherlands. Halfway around the world from home, Merry never expects to face her deepest betrayal head on, but that’s precisely what God has in mind to redeem her broken heart.

The Turner family believes in God’s providence during such a tumultuous time. Can they absorb the miracle of Christ’s birth and His plan for a future?

My Review:

What?! I can see your minds whirling in confusion. A Christmas book already? It's only September. To which I say, it's never too early for Christmas fiction when it is as exceptional as this one! The collaboration of three talented authors of this calibre promises immense satisfaction. Rest assured,  they deliver in this stunning novella collection that celebrates the real meaning of Christmas.

I can't pick out my favourite story. In fact, each novella is so well meshed with the others that Where Treetops Glistens reads as fluidly as novel. The continuity in the Turner family and the town they live in is seamless. Gave me the feel of getting to read a three book series one after the other. Talk about reader gratification!

The Word War II setting brings a special poignancy to each story. I don't know if it's because so much of my Christmas traditions are anchored in classic movies from that era, but the hope of Christmas seems more magical somehow. The romance stirs me more. Life in general seems more vibrant because so many lives are in peril. Goyer, Putnam and Sundin deliver compelling stories that honor the season and the brave Americans who lived their lives to the fullest despite crushing odds. Where Treetops Glisten is the kind of read that will herald in the warmth of the season and leave you basking in its glow right through to Christmas.

Shadowed by Grace : a Story of Monuments Men

GIVEAWAY

PUTMAN, CARA C.
SHADOWED BY GRACE : A STORY OF MONUMENTS MEN

She found peace in a time of war.

Desperate to save her dying mother, an American woman accepts her newspaper’s assignment to travel to Italy where she takes photographs dangerously close to the front lines during World War II. But Rachel’s real motive in this journey is to find the father she never knew, an artist she hopes can offer the comfort and support both she and her mother need to survive at such a desperate time.

In her quest, Rachel becomes involved with the Monuments Men effort to save great monuments and works of art from the Third Reich. Soon she will find more than she ever imagined—in war, in love, and in God.

My Review:

Utterly fascinating! I had never heard of the Monuments Men before and what great timing for this book to be released just when the movie is hitting theatres. Putman does an incredible job of bringing history to life in this historical drama laced with a hint of suspense. Danger lurks everywhere, even within the ranks of the allied forces and makes for a thrilling read.

Rachel is a captivating heroine. An interesting combination of gusty and forlorn. She faces an impossible quest  with intrepid desperation. :-) And she has incredible faith journey that inspired me. Of course, Scott is smitten, how could he not be? And intrigued. And exasperated. And cautious...but there's something about living in the middle of a war zone that sharpens emotions and makes you realize how precious time...and love is. Definitely a toe-curling romance that brings a fresh hope to a bleak time.

Awesome read from beginning to end.
