The Blade of Frontiers
The Blade of Frontiers is the Companion Quest for Wyll. It is automatically added to the journal when he joins the party inside the Druid Grove.
Objectives[edit | edit source]
Objectives and journal entries may vary pending story decisions.
Walkthrough[edit | edit source]
Wyll’s story spans the entire game.
Recruiting Wyll[edit | edit source]
Wyll can be first encountered when he joins the fight outside of the Emerald Grove. Afterwards, the party can find him inside the grove training young Tiefling refugees. He can be recruited to the party, and explains that he is hunting a devil named Karlach.
Hunt down Karlach[edit | edit source]
The party can find Karlach down the hill from the Toll House. Karlach can be spoken to and recruited, freed or killed. If Wyll is in the party, the two have a confrontation.
If Karlach is recruited to the party before speaking to Wyll, he shows up at camp to confront her. Wyll or Karlach can each be asked to leave, be killed, or the situation can be resolved peacefully.
If Karlach is encountered and recruited without Wyll in the party, they have a confrontation the next Long Rest.
Meeting Mizora[edit | edit source]
During a long rest, Mizora manifests at camp. If Karlach is killed, she gifts Wyll the Infernal Robe. Otherwise, she punishes Wyll and his appearance permanently changees.
Rescue Zariel's Asset[edit | edit source]
Mizora manifests a second time either at camp or near the entrance of Moonrise Towers, this time to request that the party rescue one of Zariel's assets, who has been trapped at Moonrise Towers. During this conversation, she can be persuaded to end Wyll's contract in exchange for rescuing the asset.
Zariel's asset cannot be found in Moonrise Towers proper, rather they can only be saved after entering the Mind Flayer Colony. Here, it is revealed that Mizora herself is the asset, being trapped within a pod in the Tadpoling Centre.
The party, noticing an opportunity, can try to negotiate Wyll's contract or simply free her:
- [INTIMIDATION] Free Wyll, or I let the cult infect you. I bet you'd make a loyal thrall. (DC 16)
- [HISTORY] Remember all you can about devils and their contracts. (DC 16)
- 'Abi, diabole, et nunquam redi.'
- [PERFORMANCE] Say you know a pact-breaking charm and chant a series of pseudo-Infernal phrases. (DC 16)
- Poor thing. I'll let you out of there.
- Fine, let's get on with it.
Convincing Mizora to free Wyll from his pact grants +10. The party can then inspect the nearby console and attempt to free her, or even kill her, however killing her also also kills Wyll:
- [STRENGTH] Gather your strength and smash your foot through the pod. (DC 14)
- [BARBARIAN] [STRENGTH] SMASH THE POD. (DC 14
)
- Examine the device on the left.
- Connect your mind to the device on the left and activate it. (if passive DC 10 Arcana check failed)
- Connect your mind to the 'annihilate' device and activate it. (if passive DC 10 Arcana check succeeded)
- Examine the device on the right.
- Connect your mind to the device on the right and activate it. (if passive DC 10 Arcana check failed)
- Connect your mind to the 'unleash' device and activate it. (if passive DC 10 Arcana check succeeded)
Saving Mizora nets another +10 approval from Wyll, however she stipulates that it takes another six months for the pact to end.
If Wyll is present, the party can ask Mizora for a reward for going through the trouble of rescuing her:
- [PERSUASION] You'd think we'd get a reward for going through all this trouble. (DC 14)
Successfully persuading her causes her to gift the Infernal Rapier to Wyll and grants another
+3 approval.
Mizora at Wyrm's Crossing[edit | edit source]
After reaching Wyrm's Crossing in Act 3, Mizora can be found loitering in Wyrm's Rock Fortress or just before the transition to the Lower City. She asks that the party attend Gortash's ordination. Afterwards, she offers to save Duke Ravengard if Wyll keeps his contract. (See for this sub-quest).
The Great Wyrm[edit | edit source]
If Duke Ravengard is saved, he gives the party the quest to gather the aid of the great wyrm Ansur.
If the Duke perishes, or Wyll breaks his pact, walking around in the Lower City may trigger an encounter with Counsellor Florrick, who confronts the party and accuses Wyll of killing his father. If Florrick is dead or still imprisoned, Cordula Eltan takes her place. If he is in the party, Wyll retorts that this is disinformation being spread by Mizora. Talking Florrick or Eltan down results in her providing the necessary information to begin the quest. If they cannot be dissuaded from attacking, the information can also be claimed from the corpse of either Florrick or Eltan.
Ansur can be found by travelling to Wyrm's Rock Prison. Here, the party must travel down the western passage way to find two dragon sconces. The sconces must be hit with electricity damage to light them. Past the new opening is The Wyrmway. After the Wyrmway's trials are completed, Ansur can be found and must be fought against.
After defeating Ansur the party should return to camp to inform Duke Ravengard if he lives, and Wyll can come to a decision about his future. Wyll can decide to become the Blade of Avernus, or follow his father's political path of Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate.
Rewards[edit | edit source]
Infernal Rapier - for freeing Mizora in the Mind Flayer Colony, if Wyll is in the party and persuading her to give the party a reward for their troubles.
Infernal Robe - if recruiting Wyll and killing Karlach. Mizora will give this on the following Long Rest.
