Does anyone own both versions of this or Metroliner? If yes, are there any major differences? I’ve always considered buying the re-released versions but was scared they might be inferior in some way.
So, every time the train sets from this era come up, there’s always comments regarding the box art theme.
Does anyone know what the reasoning was behind the box art theme decision?
Curious, now that I am thinking about remaking the epic Metroliner, inspiring random set of the day! One of the best train sets ever for sure!
1992 was the golden year for trains. I remember being so thrilled that Lego trains had finally gone mainstream in the USA! There was even a special section for them in the trains section at TRU. Lack of diverse track geometry I think is why it ultimately never took off. It was impossible to create two lines running a curve in parallel, for example. Major bummer.
Oh, those trains rocked.
This was a great time, Lego was listening to fan input and rereleased many great sets. I wish they'd continue to do amazing things like this.
@natro220 the two releases were indistinguishable from each other, save for the box and the technic pins I believe were altered.
Interesting to have two Lego Legends in the same week.
I loved this set! I sadly never had the Metroliner to pair it with, though, so it largely went unused. I relatively recently rebuilt it into a hybrid with the Super Chief's dining car, and while the Metroliner aesthetic (or rather, the Amtrak aesthetic) is no longer there, the spirit of this car rolls onward!
I don't have the Metroliner, but I didn't miss out on this one. So glad that I have it. What do I do with it? Nothing! I just stare at it, open the top, check out the bottom half, then stare at it some more and finallly go to sleep at peace...
I sense Huwbot is trying to be normal....
for now!
"Mister, can you please help me?"
"Sure - just jump and I'll catch you!"
I wish this, and many other LEGO box background would be available online.
I'm sure this set was a RSotD a few months ago, but this one is the Legacy (rereleased classics in early 2000's) one
Now that's a great start to the weekend.
@lippidp check out fxbricks for more track geometry coming soon.
This set occupies a permanent spot on my 'wanted' list, I'll tell you that.
One of these days, I'll be able to afford to pick up one on eBay and so forth. But maybe not for a while yet.
Just here wondering whatever happened to individual train car (and possibly locomotive) sets like this.
@natro220 - I was lucky enough to be able to buy the originals when they were still available in stores and then bought one each of the rereleases.
The differences were minor, although the 10001 had a few extra stickers, as a couple of the doors were not printed, like they were in 4558. One of the lady figs had a ponytail instead of the original pigtails too, as that part was no longer available. I seem to recall there being a bit of a fuss about these differences, at the time.
I've gone through the instructions for 4547 and 10002 and can't see any significant differences.
bricklink has the inventories for all 4 sets, of course.
I miss the PIII metroliners.
Whew, this set is a beauty! It's kind of sad, they don't make them like they used to, I would totally get train sets...
I remember that the Legends Club car sold out fairly quickly at LEGO, whereas the Legends Metroliner they had to put on sale for $75USD (or was it $50USD) to move the remaining stock they had.
Something tells me this was the set of the day a month or so ago.
I don't have this set, but I do have about a dozen pairs of the printed 1x2x2 panels from it and have no idea where I got them from
^ Aw man, I love finding mystery Lego amongst my parts too.
