Review: 76188 Batman Classic TV Series Batmobile
Posted by CapnRex101,The popular Batmobile has been redesigned on numerous occasions, yielding many memorable vehicles. Several maintain particular recognition, including the flamboyant design from the 1960s television series that was developed around the Lincoln Futura concept car.
Following appearances at San Diego Comic-Con and with 76052 Batman Classic TV Series - Batcave, this famed Batmobile is now available in 76188 Batman Classic TV Series Batmobile. This model looks marvellous and two impressive minifigures are also supplied, although Robin is noticeably absent which seems unfortunate.
Minifigures
76052 Batman Classic TV Series - Batcave provided an excellent version of Batman from the 1960s television series and this example also seems appealing. The light bluish grey and dark blue colour scheme corresponds with the onscreen character, although the previous minifigure featured sand blue instead. Either colour is appropriate in my opinion, given the differing colour grading between episodes of the series.
The printed cowl includes exceptional detail and I like the simple torso decoration, which lacks the dramatic musculature of many Batman minifigures to match the source material. Moreover, the metallic gold and yellow belt looks nice and continues onto the reverse, where an accurate zip from the original costume appears!
Other than their colour schemes, the most conspicuous difference between this Batman figure and its predecessor is the omission of dual-moulded legs. That is somewhat disappointing and the original minifigure is certainly superior in that respect, although this printing looks adequate as well. Batman wields two batarangs which are found in the second bag of pieces, contrary to the instruction manual which suggests they should be in bag one.
LEGO has released numerous Joker minifigures and this depiction matches Cesar Romero's depiction of the character, sporting a magenta suit. This design exhibits tremendous accuracy when compared with the famed television series, including a black tie and green shirt beneath his jacket. Furthermore, I love the stripes which decorate the legs.
Cesar Romero memorably refused to shave his moustache when playing the Joker, hence the minifigure also features a subtle moustache concealed under white makeup! Such attention to detail is appreciated and the lime green hair element looks superb, although I wonder whether the standard shade of green would have been more appropriate.
Comparing this minifigure with the depiction from 76052 Batman Classic TV Series - Batcave reveals remarkably few differences. Their heads and gloves vary while the previous minifigure features continued stripes across the sides of each leg. Otherwise, the printing appears almost unchanged and no additional alterations were required, in my opinion.
The Completed Model
Numerous interesting Batmobile models have been produced, including two previous designs based upon the 1960s example. This version shares many similarities with the Batmobile from 76052 Batman Classic TV Series - Batcave and complements 40433 1989 Batmobile - Limited Edition that was available during 2019, featuring an identical rotating display stand.
The only apparent difference between this stand and its predecessor is the plaque, displaying accurate information for the 1960s Batmobile. I am pleased with the total consistency between this sticker and the design from 40433 1989 Batmobile - Limited Edition, both featuring suitable logos for their respective source materials alongside their costumed drivers.
Detaching the Batmobile from this display base reveals an 8x8 dish underneath. This vehicle feels reasonably secure on its base and the integration of pentagonal tiles is excellent, taking advantage of their bevelled edges to create superb texture. Additionally, the contrast between this light bluish grey stand and the Batmobile enhances their appearance together.
However, the display base is unnecessary in my opinion, given the outstanding design of this Batmobile. The model measures nearly 20cm in length and features accurate black bodywork with red highlights. Admittedly, these accents are more prominent here than on the original car but that was unavoidable at this scale and such distinctive colours look wonderful.
These brighter colours become particularly apparent when viewing this model in profile, where the 1x4 curved slopes seem fairly conspicuous. However, the red bands along both flanks look perfect and I appreciate their authentic continuation around each wheel arch. The profile shape also compares favourably with the original vehicle, featuring appropriate distances between the wheels.
Despite including some obvious similarities, this rendition of the Batmobile differs substantially from the design in 76052 Batman Classic TV Series - Batcave. The most important variation is undoubtedly their length as the updated rendition is one stud shorter than its predecessor. The change is minor but surprisingly decisive, greatly improving the proportional accuracy.
Various smaller details have been updated too, including the bonnet and boot sections which combine numerous curved slopes to create sleeker shaping. The resultant structure definitely represents an improvement upon the model from 2016 and I am also pleased with the revised rocket launch tubes located behind the cockpit, now comprising three simulated launchers.
The rounded structure surrounding the radiator grille looks fantastic when compared with the source material, matching the splendid detail across the bonnet. Unfortunately, the headlights are not properly enclosed by the bodywork but that omission is excusable. The yellow accents beside these headlights are appealing as well, further reflecting the onscreen car.
Twin stud shooters are mounted on this Batmobile, corresponding with the model from 2016. These are relatively unobtrusive, although both launchers can be removed and replaced with curved slopes which are better suited to display. Such attention to detail is welcome, although considerable disassembly is required when swapping configurations. Furthermore, the sticker which represents air intakes is applied too far behind the headlights.
Additional stickers decorate both sides, featuring Batman's classic emblem from the television series. The trans-clear canopies appear equally authentic and their design returns from 76052 Batman Classic TV Series - Batcave. However, the central structure has been updated so now makes use of a black 1x6 wheel arch element. The resultant curvature is brilliant but this piece does include a projecting flange on one side.
Two seats are placed inside, corresponding with the television series but highlighting Robin's conspicuous absence. The surrounding details are perfect though, including stickered control consoles and the red Batphone. The model lacks the 'Emergency Bat-Turn' lever but includes the golden Batbeam. This 1x2 grille tile features appropriate texture but seems rather large.
The anti-theft rocket system is represented by three pearl silver bar holder with clip elements, making their first appearance in this colour. These tubes definitely improve upon the previous 1960s Batmobile from 2016, which only featured two rocket launchers. The distinctive tail fins remain somewhat inaccurate though because these should extend further forward around the cockpit.
Another important alteration from the earlier model is the boot, which now integrates the 3x4 textured element introduced during 2020 and looks marvellous. Opening this hatch reveals a large storage space, where the stud shooters and Batman's batarangs can be placed. Ideally, the mobile Batcomputer would also be concealed here, although the storage is necessary.
The shape across the rear appears particularly accurate, recreating the dramatic angles of the Lincoln Futura concept car. Furthermore, various memorable details are present, including the cylindrical exhaust beside two parachute packs! Applying these tiny stickers is challenging but they look splendid and the neighbouring trans-red lights appear equally attractive.
Overall
The ostentatious Batmobile from the 1960s television series and film remains among the most celebrated Batmobile designs. 76188 Batman Classic TV Series Batmobile should accordingly prove successful, especially given its outstanding authenticity when compared with the original vehicle. The bodywork shape and resultant proportions represent particular improvements over previous models.
Unfortunately, the absence of Robin does detract from this set, although I hope he will become available elsewhere soon. Otherwise, the minifigures are excellent and I appreciate the display base which accompanies the Batmobile. The price of £34.99 seems fairly expensive for the UK but the US and European prices of $29.99 or 29.99€ are more reasonable and I would certainly recommend this set.
This set was provided for review by The LEGO Group but the review represents an expression of my own opinions.

Fantastic attention to detail in this set.
Now I want an Adam West Batcopter with the Bat anti shark spray.
I really wish they’d go back to printing more distinct skin tones to ensure that they show up on Minifigure heads. Obviously the color matching still isn’t great but it looks infinitely better than the grayish pallor of Batman and other such characters.
lol i dont like cars but this looks cool
I can't wait to add this to my collection. Thank you for the review!
Man I love the zipper printed on the back of Batman. Looks so good.
I love it. Shame the Classic Batcave isn't really appreciating in price as I might be tempted to sell mine on, given I can get the key model and those two figures on their own...
I like the display stand. They definitely should’ve charged a little more and included Robin too, though.
I don't typically collect Batman, but I might have to pick this up just to go with my other iconic movie/tv cars (Ecto-One, Delorean, Mystery Machine, etc)
I love this set so much! I think it's great that a display stand is included. Honestly, even though we're drowning in LEGO Batmobiles, I think a $30-50 range of Batmobiles from different shows, movies, and video games all with the same style of stand would be amazing. The lack of a Robin minifigure is disappointing but the set itself is so good I can't really complain.
I really like the overall care given to the whole set. Strangely though, Lego.com is listing it at €35.00 instead of €30.00, which I guess would be ok IF Robin was included.
Robin is on this months UK LEGO SUPERHERO LEGENDS ISSUE 8 approx £4 in store or on eBay.

Wrong robin, The mag comes with a surfboarding Damien Wayne. Although the surfboarding does have a certain 60's vibe to it :p
Thanks for the review! I would love to add this to my collection. And this looks like a really great set.
Neat set! Lego LEGO.com says its available starting april 26 in Europe.
Are the wheels the type that clip on to a City-style small axle pin? I was rather hoping for stud-tipped axles so that the Bat-logos always stay upright...
Day one purchase for me. The lack of Robin is quite disappointing, yet I believe I’ll be able to make due with the body of the lego Batman movie robin with some other improv
@CapnRex101 , Thank you for another great review and set of pictures. The comparisons with 76052 Batcave's Batmobile and minifigures were particularly appreciated.
The UK price is outrageous though. The '80s style Batmobile from 2019 76119 is about the same number of pieces and has the same two characters as minifigures but costs £10 less. Both the latest Batmobile and 76119 are $30 in the US, so no price increase. But in the UK, it's up 40%. What does LEGO think the two-year inflation rate is in the UK? (Hint: it's far, far less than 40%). While I love the '66 era Batmobile, I'll be waiting for it to be significantly discounted.
Excellent rendition of the only proper Batmobile. Now a UCS version please Lego!
This is a wonderful set.
There should be penalty for doing 1x1 stickers
Owning the Batcave from 2016, this one is an easy pass for me. The previous Batman looks better.
When will LEGO learn to print light colors properly on dark heads and torsos?
I have the bat mobile from 76052-1 on display next to me. Having learned that there is a similar car coming out again, I thought it's an easy pass. But now, after having read the review, I'm not so sure anymore :) I am somewhat tempted by the display stand and the higher accuracy of the car. I don't care too much about the figs, would just swap Robin (and maybe Batman) in from 76052-1 most likely
EDIT: I just noticed it will be SEK449, which is approximately EUR44 or GBP38. I think I'll pass...

71017-9 for the shark repellent ;-)
Used to watch that show every night back when it was on The Hub channel. Very excited for this set
Awesome retro set!!!
Say hello to my brother's birthday present!
Nooo the Batman mini figure printing is sub par quality…
Someone get Batman to a doctor (or into the sun), he really looks rather pale.
I really don't understand why nobody at LEGO picks up one of these weakly printed pieces up in the factory after the first few tries and says: "Oh no, there seems to be to little colour. We should do better!"
Don't they have a quality control department - or don't they listen to them anymore.
I am not one of the people who always clamor on about how LEGO used to be better in the past. But in their printing quality, they really have been better!
I would love to see this in the same size as the 1989 vehicles/the tumbler
Great review of a great set, thanks! Really appreciate the comparison photos between this and the 2016 version. Just don't say the skin tone of this Batman is supposed to be the same as that...
I really wish 40433 had been available for normal purchase. Nice to have a good, cheap, medium-sized display piece that isn't a GWP or a US exclusive!
Not a fan of Batman, but honestly I'll probably pick this up.
Batman's face is rather washed out, or is that a trick of the light?
I hope there will be a UCS version of this vehicle. It could come with Robin and a different villain.
I am loving the detailed but smaller-than-ucs <1000 piece display model. Reasonable size, price and non-exclusive (I am looking at you 77904 Nebulon-B).
And I do not actually mind the batman face print, it adds a certain nostalgia factor for me both for old LEGO and for the washed out graininess of seeing the show in syndication as a kid in the 80s. What I do not like on either the print or the dual-mold is the boots. To me they come up too high and make it look like kneepads on on dark legs instead of tights, boots and, you-know, underwear.
Robin would be nice, but what I really want is a batgirl gwp: minifig and a minifig motorcycle with a molded crazy sculpted cowling... Bubble windshield, use a printed tile for the frills on the seat and maybe the bow on the back. No idea how they would manage the lace.
@Metalizer7734: I was quite surprised an disappointed to see those stickers. I thought Lego had stopped doing that.
@Snaz: I was going to say, "He's Batman. He doesn't get enough sun," but then I remembered: Adam West Batman.
Cool set, but I wish TLG did it before Adam West died, that way he could have seen it.

The 2016 version actually looks suntanned, at least in comparison to this new one.
Thanks for the side by side. It shows how much better this new version looks!
I modified the previous version to 6 wide, but then it looks a tad too long in comparison to width. This needs to be 8 wide and this slightly shorter version nails it.
I agree the figures look great, but definitely not as great as the D2C set. And I liked the Joker face better on the previous version.
I'll still buy it though so there's that.
Day 1 buy! I hope we get more Bat mobiles presented in this manner!
Batman Forever
Batman and Robin
The Tumbler
And many more....
Great design!
The Batman is coming!!!
Totally getting it when I can! So cool!
FUEL: Batfuel.
This thing runs on BATS??
Seriously, though, this thing is gorgeous! In for one.
Definitely getting this when it pops up in the wild! Makes me excited to see if they revisit more Batmobiles through the years like this, with the display stand and plaque
Not sure why they have to add joker in almost all "special" Batman sets. For this set it should have been Robin no doubt about it, where were they thinking? Why Joker over Robin? Robin is the copilot of this Batmobile, kind of. If Robin is included, then I wouldn't mind having Joker as extra (but still questionable, there are many more characters in that TV series). Also wish they make the Joker mobile for the Joker minifig instead of having him awkwardly in this set. Also what's the "weapon" in Joker's hand? Pretty sure he didn't use something like that in the series. They should do more research and stick to the original series. Maybe give me a magic wand or the magic box or the joker utility belt or the "vacuum" he used in the movie, which would fit him far better.
I prefer this version of the Batmobile but I prefer the minifig from the Batcave and as for joker it's great to get a new head design!
I hope lego produce the Blue Batboat and a more detailed Bay copter one day and also Yvonne Craig's batcycle too.

Bat guano is highly flammable so as an additive to petrol in a specially adapted motor it could work. Not sure it would confer an advantage though.
LEGO is charging a premium price for a model where the mini figures are seriously lacking.
No a Robin, and Batman’s printing looks so much worse in the flesh. Seriously, they can do better.

Having an antagonist character in the set maximizes the play value and helps make for a better toy, particularly in the case of conflict-heavy themes like this one. And while this may look like a collector's model and the source material is less familiar to kids, the set is still part of the main LEGO Batman line.
£34.99? With no Robin? Ridiculous. When I was trying to predict the price £24.99 was my highest guess. I'm glad I'm not a comic book fan, though this looks a great model.
Another great review. This set looks fantastic but I would definitely prefer to get a Robin minifig instead of the stand.

Do what I’ll be doing and wait for the price to come down to about £25. If lots of people buy it at £35, it will only encourage LEGO to overcharge other sets in future. If on the other hand consumers collectively hold back and sales of this set (or re-orders from resellers) are sluggish at the higher price, LEGO will get the message and desist with silly prices.
Maybe the British price is a result of Brexit.

yup, especially since they do lego dots ....

Unlikely. If that were the cause, all of LEGO’s UK prices would have gone up, not just a few sets.
Very nice review.
Really showing both cars was eye opening to me.
I didn't realize that this new version...IS SO MUCH BETTER.
The shortening of the front end, the better details all around make this a must get.

Like you said it yourself, plus many others in the comments, this looks more like a collector/adult model especially with the UCS style plate and stand. There are many other sets with batman and joker minifigs in them that are more mainstream and for kids. Even without that in consideration, it still doesn't quite justify having joker over robin for this model, as suggest by quite many people here. Especially this vehicle is for batman and robin, even CapnRex101 pointed it out several times in the review that robin is noticably missing, especially with the empty robin seat. Joker is not gonna sit in there with batman and fighting crime together instead of robin...
Can't help but to think the classic Batcopter is next to come, using Robin there as an additional selling point. Would be a disappointing strategy, eventhough i'd be happy to collect both sets.
Such a shame that the 89 batmobile to go with this was a GWP. Hopefully they’ll do it again as a general release set, just picked this one up yesterday and would love to start a collection of minifig scale batmobiles. ‘89 and Tumbler next, please LEGO!
