Hooray, the train from Hades has arrived!
I love industrial style Town and City sets. The harbor subtheme is one of my faves.
Ooh, tiny blue cannons!
Classic, love that little weigh station.
Lego city getting its next supply of toilet paper
A train has fallen into the caves below LEGO City!

Oh wow! This is a play set!
Believe it was my first Lego Train. I recall I really wanted the Metroliner but I was very much broke, but with my first paycheque I went back to Toysrus and had settled for this set since Metroliner was gone. It started my love from Lego trains from this set even though it was a little underwhelming.
I regret spending money on a lot of crappy little sets in the 90s instead of saving up for some good larger ones like this train set.
That weight is one of the most creative mechanisms Lego designers ever did.
New designers should learn from it.
What's with all the moustaches? The main picture shows all the minifigs have moustaches, yet inventories show one of them should be a normal face with sunglasses.
Hmmm...You don't suppose Lego City saved money for the police to get jets by recycling/reusing the mining rail system for its regular train-line, do ya...:)
Either that, or some visitor from the UK (or equivalent) said something about their "Underground", and Fleck liked the idea (even things got 'lost in translation':)).
One of my first LEGO trains (along with 4561) out of my dark ages as I never had the ability to have a LEGO train in the 80's. Now I have over-compensated by having every LEGO train set from 80 on except for 7750 and 7866.
This is a great set.
I bought this set when I was 13 in a small store in Germany during holiday.
You think it’s just gravel they’re shifting around but in fact those are good intentions, for clearly they are paving the road to hell...
This is one of the oddest LEGO sets out there. Except for the locomotive, which would be quite cool if it was in a better color combo, and the scales, which are just a good play, it’s just... Odd. Like, what are the blue barrels? Cement mixers? If so, what are the sticks on each side of each barrel? And the “tool” train car? What’s up with that? Are the cranes operated by the force? And the oddest thing is, that although so odd, so many people actually think it’s a great set! Why is that? How? What?
This and the reissued Metroliner were my son's first trains when he turned 6. I spoiled the kid, and I'd do it again!
I can still remember when I got this set. I had a joint checking account with my mom (hence her name was on the checks along with mine), and my handwriting's never been all that good, so Lego actually called Mom to make sure the check was legit. They were worried some kid had gotten into his mom's checkbook!
I adore 9V trains, each and every one of them. But I kinda have mixed feelings about this one. I love the trackside weigh station, and I think the engine is really well-designed. But it's basically the same carriage, 3 times. The one thumbs-down on that one.
Was it ever explained why all the 90s trains were in a cave?
@Speed_champions_fan:
It’s the Clan of the Cave Train.
This was available for an unusually long period of 7 years. It was superseded in 2003 by 4512.
My brother and I got it at Saint Nicholas (the local equivalent of Christmas); we still have it in our parents' house, but it hasn't run for at least a decade. I'm quite confident, though, that it'd still drive perfectly.
Spyrius train!
Best cargo train in LEGO ever. Lookin at it I realize how miserable are trains of today like 60198...
