Review: K-Pawp Concert

Posted by ,

Five of the summer Vidiyo sets introduce a feature that was sorely missing from those released earlier in the year: something to actually build!

The sets include a number of the extravagant and attractive minifigures that characterise the theme together with pieces to construct a stage or performance area in which they can put on a show.

It's unclear exactly how the stages manifest themselves in the app because it's not been updated to recognise the new sets yet, so we'll be publishing the majority of our Vidiyo reviews later in the month when it has been.

For now, though, let's take a look at one of the more colourful and flamboyant sets in the range, 43113 K-Pawp Concert, to see if it has anything to offer without the augmented reality aspect provided by the app.

Minifigures

Three members make up the K-pop band and it's interesting that they've not been given names as such, simply Bunny on guitars, Kitten on keys and Flying Unicorn on vocals.

Bunny's head first appeared in 43101 Bunny Dancer from series one of the bandmates, but the decoration on this one is more masculine. His vibrant coral jacket is equally vibrantly decorated with teal jacket lapels, stripes and a lavender T-Shirt.

All three of the figures have a diamond motif somewhere on their outfits.

Kitten's head element is new in the summer sets and is re-used elsewhere as a leopard. She too is wearing a colourful outfit, printed with exceptional detail.

She has a pink bushy tail fitting for her species and her jacket also has a diamond motif on the rear.

Last but certainly not least, the most glamorous member of the trio, Flying Unicorn!

Her head is a re-colour of the one in 43106 Unicorn DJ BeatBox, but it's been moulded in more attractive colours and decorated with dazzling make-up.

Unlike the earlier unicorn, this one can fly thanks to some beautiful iridescent wings which I believe are unique to this figure.

Beatbits

The set comes with the same stand and plates to attach the BeatBits to as the BeatBoxes, and it's used in the same way to interact with the app, i.e. you point your phone's camera at it, and it recognises the figure and any BeatBits on it.

The stand does not connect to the rest of the model in any way, though, and there's no storage area for the BeatBit tiles. Given that there are more in the set than attach to the plates they might therefore get lost during play.

17 BeatBits are provided, two of which are unique to it (dark pink middle, and black top): the others are randomly selected from what looks to be the same pool of designs that are also in the BandMates S1 and BeatBoxes.

The stage

The performance area is as colourful as the performers. There's space for the band members at the front and a further four platforms on which additional backing musicians or dancers can be placed. There's a turntable on the left and a keyboard on the right for them to interact with.

A giant rotating headphone-wearing head towers above the stage. On one side it's a unicorn, on the other a cat. The lights (or are they speakers?) on either side of the stage underneath the platforms can be rotated, too.

Another performance area is situated behind the main stage. There's room for one minifigure to stand on an illuminated floor, behind which there's a nice printed 2x4 tile showing two dancing minifigures. The other two band members can stand on the platforms either side of the head.

The backdrops at the side of the stage are hinged and can be turned backwards to create a more attractive performance arena when you're using this side.

It looks as if, appropriately, this part is also used as a backstage area when the main stage is in use, where the performers can partake in some refreshment from the goblets on the left or grab an extra mic stand from the right.

I's unclear at the moment how the stage area interacts with the app. It might just be that it's used as a backdrop when making music videos, or it might be something more sophisticated. I will report back once it has been updated.

Verdict

This is a fun and cleverly designed set that provides a wealth of opportunities for playing out different performance scenarios, even without the augmented reality aspect provided by the app.

The minifigs are superb and the model is colourful and attractive, so much so that even if you have no intention of playing with it as intended, you might find yourself wanting to buy it.

It contains 514 pieces and will cost £45/$50/€50, which is a little on the high side but if it's anything like the earlier Vidiyo sets, it'll be reduced at Amazon soon after launch.

I will reserve final judgement until I've seen how it works with the app.

K-Pawp live in concert

Here are a few shots of the band performing at a concert recently. I had a front row seat!

Half-way through the set, superstar DJ L.L.A.M.A joined the trio to perform his hit single Shake.

Thanks to LEGO for providing the set for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Certainly wouldn't get lost in a Star Wars display! Those last pics are fantastic :)

I actually kinda dig this set, apart from its price that is. The colors and style work really well and make for an awesome stage that I can see myself using for various instrument-wielding minifigs and I really like the way it's designed on a 45 degree angle. It makes it a lot easier to display in a corner as well, which is also really useful (for me at least, I don't know how everyone else displays/stores their built sets). If this does indeed go on sale I might get it if it's €30 or below. That all depends on my decisions regarding the new Ninjago, Mario, Marvel and Star Wars sets, they're all so good!

Oh, and I suddenly realized how reminiscent this design is of that one Justice League party set from TLBM, which I also really liked and had that corner design too.

An overall cute set and a Vidiyo Set that I actually like! I like the set as a whole but the Minifigures are conflicting to me. Somewhat cute but a little creepy, especially the unicorn. The retail price seems too much as well.

These look great! L.L.A.M.A., Ne-Yo and Carmen DeLeon were set to perform Shake on Live with Kelly and Ryan but unfortunately it seems to have been cancelled. There appeared to be some sort of in-person event in the UK as well when L.L.A.M.A. visited. Not sure what became of that either.

I still want his minifigure, but I'm not paying $50 to get a BeatBox imported over.

Those wings are ideal for Aziraphale mocs

My first reaction to this review was "why this k-pop first, this must be by far the least set of the five!!". I'm not at àll a k-pop fan...
But, i have to admit. It's a nice set. Great design by the uhm... designers. The minifigures are great, like always, and i love how the stage has actually 2 sides to perform, or you can use it as a backstage.
I love the tiles and stairs where you can put the musicians on. I'm a big music fan and i like the idea of displaying actual LEGO musicians on a set in stageform!

So, great review, nice pics. But i still think i like the pirate punk ship better ;)

Where are these sets available? Thought they weren't out til August

@Huw - is this designed to all fold up into some sort of box shape? Can't quite tell if it's hinged or fixed in the display shape.
With the choice of bright colours, I'm least convinced by the choice of black as the base colour for this music genre but then again, change the accent colours and you've got a nu metal stage.

Another voice here, echoing that those are indeed great photos!

The backstage area's illuminated floor is part of the dancing computer game displayed on the screen.

Perhaps the singer should be called Peggy (the pegacorn)...?

Another thing I'm torn about...
The theme as a whole doesn't interest me much, the app even less, but still feel drawn to it for some reason. Maybe it's the good quality figures, funky parts, ...
No-go at full price, though.

Perhaps the rotating "lights/speakers" will work like the 'color wheels' from Hidden Side;
Each color gives a different effect in the app?

Aww man! I really hope those heads start appearing in sets outside this theme. ^.^

They're out in June :)

It will be interesting to see how many stores stock these - I certainly won't be getting any more Vidiyo sets, that range I feel will be forever tainted. The first wave has done absolutely nothing in my shops, even at a discount

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Does it really only have 375 pieces? It's set page says it has 514, as does the picture of its box under Additional Images.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ My mistake. I checked LEGO.com and not for the first time looked at the number of VIP points instead of the number of pieces ;) It is 514.

Don't worry, I've also made that mistake more than a few times before!

$50 seems about average for a set with just over 500pcs and 3 unique figures. I don't think it's that overpriced compared to other stuff, at least.

My only disappointment is that this and the previous bunny didn't come with tails of any variety, not even printed on. I feel like they could have gotten away with reusing the duck tail mold used for Donald and co.

Either way, the set is bright, colorful, and fun. I look forward to getting one myself eventually.

The four molded rabbit heads of 2021 make quite a diverse set: Rabbit from Winnie the Pooh, Bugs and Lola Bunny from Looney Tunes, and the character from Vidiyo. I like the first one best. Better see if I can find a hundred bucks in quarters between the couch cushions ... Seriously, though, this looks like a pretty fun set for people whose imagination trends toward flashy pop concerts. Mine doesn't, but there are plenty of sets for me so I don't mind. The first wave of Vidiyo was pretty bad because there weren't any actual construction toys in the lot, but this is much better.

Indeed, this line of sets are something that can be integrated nicely with themes like SW.

Colorscheme fits right in with the 70828 : Pop-Up Party Bus

Perhaps supply chain problems are why nothing like these sets was issued in Vidiyo's first wave, but I feel having nothing but BeatBoxes and BandMates in that debut may have shot the whole theme in the foot from the get-go. I know that seeing this second wave is changing my whole impression of the theme, and I'm sure its target audience (which, judging from what seem to be uniformly lackluster sales, was equally unimpressed at launch) will be even more enthusiastic than the AFOLs to have something to *play* with. Trouble is, does this come too late to turn the theme around? I hope not!

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Damn these look good. I'm so excited for this wave, and I hope it allows for a third afterwards! I'll be insta-buying everything right away. The way they're completing bands, and giving every figure a spot on their stage is awesome. And the new figs look super impressive, as did the first batch!

It's a shame though that they're going against their original press release and not giving Canada their sets until August. That's a huge gap considering the rest of the world gets them on June 1st. I assume it's shipping related, but with summer vacations, it'd have been ideal for kids to get their hands on early.

The illuminated floor and dancing sticker in the backstage area is very likely actually a dancing game like DDR.

The Flying Unicorn appears to have ambiguous gender. Which is thematically on point for K-Pop.

If that new wing piece was in pearl gold, it would be perfect for upgrading Hawkman!

I just pretend that the head pieces are very elaborate masks.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

From the perspective of the monofig collector in me, those figures (at least for parts) are beginning to grow on me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I thought they had official names? They're more just titles like all the other characters but the press release called them the Bunny Guitarist, Kitten Keytarist, and Flying Unicorn Singer. The set images show those names on the box, too.

By in United States,

Why does the backstage screen show normal humans dancing? I thought we were to believe this was a world inhabited purely by fantasy/animal people! Are the Vidyo characters hiding some dark secret??

The Discowboy begs to differ. There's a few human figures in there for sure. Samurapper, Punk Guitarist and CottonCandy Dancer the only other ones so far though!

As someone else stated before, I also picture them all as human but with masks/disguises. Although how the Banshee Singer does her thing still eludes me! Those are some good live special effects!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I don't much care for the staging area (or the price), but I think I'll be tracking down the figures on Bricklink at the earliest opportunity.

Gravatar

The pirate punk set from this line interests me, looking forward to a review of that one hopefully.

Are there any stickers? I'm hoping the dance dance revolution-type game screen is not a sticker.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Huw I believe the yellow backed tile at the bottom is also unique. There’s a graphic in your more images tab in each of the ViDIYo construction sets that shows the number of exclusive tiles matches the number of figures in each

I’m sure others have already made this joke/observation, but it just hit me that Vidiyo is basically LEGO Masked Singer... what a world!

This reminds me of the final scenes in the movie "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."
