This reminds me of that time in high school when I heard one of my classmates got a Ferrari. And then the follow-up clarification: “No, he got a _Fiero_.”
What a lame little Spyrius set. I have a soft spot for Spyrius though. My first space set was a Spyrius/castle value pack. It was my only space set for almost a decade until I discovered BLACKTRON!
This little ship would make a lame Blacktron set. easy to do, just swap the red for white.
Kind of looks a bit like a jet ski they slapped rockets on (probably why it looks a little cool, too). Is that why it's called a space jet, it's really a space jet ski?
Huwbot is back in the groove!
This guy looks a little plain without the excellent helmet printing his buddies got. He seems happy though.
Even within the rather large genre of "tiny, one-seater spaceships/planes/pods with no cockpit and minimal propulsion" that was a staple of 90s Space, this is not a standout craft, let alone a standout set. I'm not sure that I can call it bad, per se, since it clearly isn't trying to be anything fancy. I think it might come down to the wedge plate that forms its base: in theory, it should lend it some aerodynamicy or coolness; instead, it broadens the profile and make it feel more like a glider.
I mean, it's still Spyrius and thus worthy of all my love, but objectively it's probably only a grade in the Cs at best. Just swapping that wedge plate with a 2×8 base would probably have helped.

Yeah, I thought something just looked off about his helmet. And you're right, he's missing the helmet printing.
Bro has ultra defined eyebrows
Again, 1998 seems ‘late’ for this theme. Good to see he got his brows done prior to flying though.

Hopefully, it was a Fiero Enzo at least.
(go look it up)
Hmm...looks about right...as 'jets' don't work that well in 'space' (that lack of oxygen and such...:)).
I bet it took them ages to come up with that name
At first glance I thought this thing had a stud shooter. Then I realized, "That can't be right; they wouldn't even exist for more than a decade!"
Also, yet another Space set where the pilot/driver has to operate it one-handed because he had to hold something with the other hand.

Well... it isn't exactly 1998. Like many Kabaya promotional sets, this was a renumbering of an earlier set. It was actually released in 1995, just a year behind the bulk of the subtheme (which was normal at the time for tiny sets like this).

Maybe Jet is the minifig's name. A friend of mine is called Jet.
First thought was that this was a copy of an early '80 set with dark colours.
1998 so I'm waiting for those "FaLl Of LeGo" doomers to show up.
This isn't far-fetched from being a modern day military vehicle.
Aww, cute little Spyrius scooter

Its actually a re-release of an earlier set, so no such luck I'm afraid...
This set always reminded me a bit of the mini flyer from Spyrius set 6949 Robo Guardian/Mighty Mogul...
The 2 classic themed Kabaya series of 1998 were really a bit odd (even for their time)...
Promo sets made to promote themes that were cancelled half a decade ago?
Also those were in fact 'reissues' of impulse/polybag sets of their respective lines back when they were still active. So does that make them a 'preview' of 2001's Legends line?
The only set that somewhat connected to an active line was the UFO set 3012, however that one is weird as well since it breaks the timeline - 3015 Space Police II (1992/1993), 3014 Ice Planet 2002 (1993/1994), 3013 Spyrius (1994/1995), 3012 UFO (1997).
They somehow skipped 1996's Exploriens. It's understandable they left out both Unitron and RoboForce, since neither theme had such a small set they could re-release (also both themes were a bit under-developed and for the most limited to specific markets). Exploriens both had a matching set (1858) and would fit the timeline better.
Has someone at Lego made the same mistake again and thought 3012 was an Exploriens set despite the fact it clearly isn't? The set it's based on was 6800 (EU/box)/6816 (NA/polybag) released in 1997 had the same dark blue background on the box as all Exploriens sets had; clearly not the slimey-green rocks shown on other UFO sets. They even put the Exploriens logo on the polybag 6816! What a mystery...
The Castle counterpart sets were 2889-2892 (released the same year, it featured re-releases of polybag-type sets from Crusaders, Black Knights, Dragon Masters and Royal Knights (1991-1996). What makes both of these Kabaya series special, is that they contain Minifig torsos which were not made AFTER they changed the inner supports of the torso to the modern type in late 1997.
Is there someone out there who can confirm which torso type the minifigure in this specific set has for example? Spyrius torsos shouldn't be available in the modern type, so I'm quite curious :)
@brickengineeringdude:
I never saw it in person, but I have heard of it before. There are quite possibly more Fieros on the road today that have been modded to look like Ferrraris than those that remain stock. This may be due to the introduction of the Fiero Mera in the ‘87-‘88 model years, which allowed you to order a factory mod of a new car through the dealership that looked like a “Magnum P.I.” style 308, as that seems to be one of the more common aftermarket mods as well. Naturally, Ferrari sued them and forced them to discontinue the Mera. Soon after, the Fiero was discontinued, and Magnum P.I. was cancelled. Coincidence?
Anyways, the Fiero Enzo, which looks like a real Enzo (if viewed in a funhouse mirror) “won” Worst In Show at the August 2019 Concours d’Lemons held at Pebble Beach. I just displayed several cars, trucks, and a motorcycle at the July 2020 Concours d’Lemons held last weekend in Plymouth, MI:

The event photographers posted five photos of the cars I displayed (see if you can figure out which ones they are). My dad was a bit disappointed that his silver ‘87 Toyota truck didn’t even get one photo posted.
Lego should bring back Space. Not NASA. Sci-fi classic space like this. Even a basic impulse set like this there has been nothing like for almost a decade, not counting Benny's Space ship/squad.
NEW from Lego..."Space Jet"!
Named by the same Master Set Namer that brought you classics like "Classic Train" and "My Dad"!
I actually can't understand how this is lame but older sets of similar size aren't?
It totally follows the tradition of sets like 885 or 6803...
It makes a nice booster, especially if you have the LuLa 6959 or one of the Spyrius robots.
Also, for better aerial surveillance, you'd rather want a smaller craft.
I only can recommend it!
