"Rod Rider"?

Seriously?

By in Canada,

Mmmmmm, Liking the colours here. Lime, black, silver. Definitely got some good Blacktron vibes here.

By in United States,

I own two of these. One because I won a LEGO contest at my local library back in 2012, and the other was a Christmas gift. Never applied the stickers to either one.

By in United States,

When the number of stickers starts to approach the number of parts, it's time to reconsider your entire worldview.

By in United States,

I think I got some of these for the lime cheese wedges.

By in United States,

If you have the Flame Glider set, this would be its newer brother.

8681 has an ever more accurate one, but is also orange.

By in Canada,

Good thing this isn’t minifig scale and more like the Hot Wheels type car it is supposed to compete against: that windscreen is wayy too small and mostly blocked by the oversized air intake.

Also neat how the 3-wide cab is built on a platform of jumpers. I think the rear wheels could have been larger but maybe the fender wouldn’t have allowed it — slick tires are cool but undersized here.

By in United States,

Nice. The lime seems a bit bright though.

By in United States,

Anyone remember the “boxes” these came with?

Gravatar
By in United States,

These little cars had too many stickers

Gravatar
By in United States,

What role this this guy play in the Cars movies?

@Spidermanager:
Individual cars came in a plastic pod with a lid shaped like no car they ever produced for Tiny Turbos. Slightly larger sets with 2-3 vehicles came in a fold out plastic storage container that turned into a road system, and the lid was shaped like another car...that has also never been released as a Tiny Turbos model. Kinda makes you wonder if they used early prototypes that were discarded at some point, or if they intentionally came up with original designs for the two lids.

@Lego_mini_fan:
Yeah, it was awesome, because they were a great source of new cheese wedge colors, and _none_ of them were decorated. There were also some stickers that had minifig-scale manhole covers and cardboard box stickers.

“Rod Rider” just doesn’t sound right.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hmm, I recall this being in orange...?

Gravatar
By in United States,

'Rod rider' is not something you should hear on a Children's Toy forum....

I mean, have you even seen how bland this thing looks without the stickers applied? Usually, LEGO sets look just fine without the stickers, but in the case of LEGO Racers, I feel like they genuinely contributed to making the cars look better.
I never quite understood why there always has been so much hate against the stickers. Sure, they can be tedious to apply sometimes, but you get better with at it the more you practice it. And unlike with printed parts, you can always easily take off the stickers if you want to use the parts without them...

By in Hungary,

Out of the 7 RSotD this week, only 2 contained minifigs.
Oh well, that's life

Gravatar
By in United States,

That front grill piece is really cool looking.

Gravatar
By in Turkey,

I passed on these sets when I had the chance. I recently tried to replicate it with my part to no avail, sadly. I wish I had them all in different colors, even though they are all constructed exactly the same....

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Between the bulkiness and the colouring I’m getting a real Frankenstein’s Monster vibe. Frankenstein’s Monster Truck perhaps?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Thought it was ‘Red ‘ Rider for a sec. I was momentarily confused.

The role they had to edit out to keep it PG ;-)

Different set, similar model. 8641

By in Netherlands,

I loved this thing as a kid, perfect toy car like Matchbox or Hot Wheels. Perfectly captures the look of a hotrod, very fun to push along the floor. I later got the orange one from a flea market because of the memories.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Oh I had one of these as a kid. I still have a box for this thing. Lego should do more of those micro vehicles.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

Got it... Love it.
Didn't use a single sticker.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

The stickers on those things were apalling and brittle. Were they printed, they'd be much cooler.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nice! I own this set. I really liked the Tiny Turbos series from LEGO Racers. They are really fun sets to build and to play and the playsets were also awesome!

I will miss Tiny Turbos. R.I.P

@PurpleDave:
The original canisters had lids shaped like tires. It was only the last year or two of the Tiny Turbos run that had the car shaped lid. It was also only the last year or two that had the fold out plastic tracks for the play-sets. Prior to that, the play-sets came in normal boxes.

I know it's been a while, but there once was a time when no LEGO sets contained minifigures...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh I didn’t have this one. Just the orange one.

I liked the Tiny Turbos, but the packaging costs seem like they increased the price.

I mean this was $6.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks great! I never got this one for some reason, even though I wanted it.

I don't get why LEGO won't expand the Tiny Turbos-scale Speed Champions selection. We only have two, usually only seen as seasonal sets or GWPs. A '32 Ford in this style would look great! Maybe use the pullback motor so far only seen in the Shell promos from a few years back?

@merf71:
Looking through the theme, I should have at least one or two of the tire-topped pods, but I can’t seem to find any. The majority of TT sets I bought were 8193, which I bought at least half a dozen copies of for the cheese wedges.

Tiny Turbos ran from 2005-2011, with a lone polybag capping the theme in 2013. For the first year, all they released were single-car pods. The second year had one playset, 8681 Tuner Garage. The next two years were a bit hit-and-miss, in terms of playsets. 8135 Bridge Chase had an actual play-oriented playset, while 8147 Bullet Run just had what looks like minifig-scale toll booths. 8154 Brick Street Customs feels on par with Tuner Garage, but 8495 Crosstown Craze has...a single stoplight.

2009 saw the debut of the foldout playsets, with 8124, 8125, and 8126. 8186 Street Extreme (which I bought for two parts) had two of the foldout roads, but no caps to turn them into portable containers. 8182 Monster Crushers repeated the molded ramps from 2007, which was also the last playset without the road system. 2010 had three more playsets with the special lid for transport, and one playset (8211 Brick Street Getaway) that looks like a bloated fold-up playset with one road section, but five vehicles and too much scenery to pack inside. It came in a regular box, again without the special lid. This was also the last year for playsets.

Somewhat ironically, the final year of playsets also saw the single-car pods get a new lid shaped like a car, probably so they’d match the look of the fold-up playsets. The next year, there were no playsets, and it was the final regular year for Tiny Turbos in general, so the car lids did each have a two-year run, but staggered by a year. 2012 had no sets at all, and 2013 only had one polybag. Polybags, therefore, were the most common element of the theme, appearing seven of the eight years.

Rod Rider was my nickname in high school but only in a cruel, bullying way

Gravatar
By in Russian Federation,

Yesss... another RSOTD I have a long time ago.
Neat little set, in plastic canister...
But stickers... oh my.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

This was by far the worst TT series.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Tiny Turbos were fun. I don't have this one, but I wish they were still around - they'd be fun little impulse buys, and we'd have more variety than the single one that comes out w/ each set of Speed Champions at this point.
