Gotta have one of those around to treat the wounds and attach the peg legs. Wait, wrong doc

Ah yes, the adolescent Duplo people.

By in United Kingdom,

I miss that monkey.

And that same year, 4 year olds were encouraged to be Pirates in Lazy Town.

Coincidence? I think not!

Do what you want 'casue a pirate is free, you are a pirate!
Yah – har – fiddle-dee-dee, being a pirate is all right to be!
Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free, you are a pirate!

Jack Stone suffered terribly in his old age, setting up a junkyard on a random beach and believing himself to be the reincarnation of an old pirate.

It is not coincidence that 2004 was in the deepest depths of my first Dark Age.

By in Australia,

To be honest I'd rather have these back now than no pirates theme at all :(

It is dreadfully juniorised though. I have one of these old pirates. Some of the 4+ pirates ships weren't that bad, it's just the weird mediumfigs (you could hardly call them minifigs).

This set have some really rare pieces!

@Brickchap I honestly thought I imagined the 2015 Pirates line

By in United States,

These sets were pretty wacky - but look at that sand green parrot and trans-green jug!!

I had the pirate ship and loved it.

No, I think you are right there. The figures aside, these sets were actually pretty good for -- at the time -- nifty and interesting pieces that weren't readily available elsewhere. You had animals and treasures, and I'm a sucker for transparent pieces (like the jug. Loved that thing).

@Zordboy:
And getting drunk as a skunk, judging by the size of that bottle. They don’t call him Stoned Jack for nothin’…

@MrNowack:
Nay, that be medium-green! Tis a shade yer might ha’ seen in mint chocolate ice cream, depending on the brand. Aarh.

I don’t know if these sort of LEGOs should have existed, but I can see why littler kids would like these sets and interesting, not so LEGO minifigures.

By in Canada,

I have a few of these sets and they aren’t that bad. The quality of parts is outstanding, they used cloth sails in the ships like in regular sets and as some have said many of the individual pieces are quite rare. I have a chrome scimitar from one and it’s gorgeous.

I also don’t get the hate on for these figs; okay Jack did almost universally stink as a theme but I think that if this comprised Fabuland animal figs with pirate hats — more or less the same as this — people would be gushing over it.

The Jack Stone pirate sets in hindsight aren't completely terrible. Just mostly terrible. This one actually looks like an ok parts pack. And those figures I think would be good for their intended use: that of play figures for very young builders.

That lantern looks like a Blacktron's lantern....

Is it weird that I really want to clip or attach things to that pegleg? Wait, this is how Metalbeard got started isn't it...

Are those weird arms and legs interchangeable with real minifigs or Fabuland figs?

Wait, they even have fingers! Woah!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll bet that if the rowboat first appeared in this set, it would have been pilloried for being a "juniorized" piece that just adds to the bloat and cost of LEGO today. But because it debuted in a classic Pirate set years before, it's a timeless classic full of nostalgia and a positive addition to the play features of the set...

Perspective is an interesting thing!

And I just noticed, the monkey appears much more in scale with the Jack Stone figures than with the traditional minifigures...but I still prefer the classic Pirates over this line, which serves much better as a parts pack than a coherent, usable set for us older "kids".

And for good reason, I’d say.

I’m glad Lego now goes with mini figs in 4+ sets

No. They are one piece assembled at the factory and not meant to be taken apart.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've actually gotten a couple of the junior pirates sets just for some of the rare parts. Plus, any set of the classic monkey fig can't be all bad. :)

Mounting the skull of a giant on the mast - that's grim.

can you imagine encouraging kids in the 1600s that being a pirate was "ok" and "cool" at a time when pirates were sailing around murdering and stealing?!?

@magnumsalyer:
Captain Jack Sparrow, PotC1.

And we still tell kids pirates are cool even though piracy is still very much a fact of life in some parts of the world. Captain Richard Phillips even felt it was so inevitable off the coast of Somalia that he figured you should make it easy for them by sailing close to shore, so they didn’t need to waste any fuel getting out to the recommended shipping lanes.

By in Australia,

When these sets came out I was the perfect target age (4). And for all the flock that these sets and the Jack Stone sets get, me and my brother absolutely adored them. I cannot count the number of times that I took this set apart and rebuilt it into one of the alternate models. It might not be the prettiest set but these sets are the reason that I love Lego today and I haven't had a dark ages yet (although I'm only 22).

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like how there wasn't a "good guys" faction for these. Just pirates!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Monkey is the best minifigure in this set.

Still, the build might not be much, there are very cool parts, parrot, bottle, black rifle, swords, rowboat , skull brick, brown mast and rope/winch assembly.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Weird that the flag has a minifig skull (instead of the human skull from Classic Pirates) but the set is infested with these ghastly Jack Stone figures.

I guess the 4 Juniors figures kill minifigures. It just makes one hate them all the more!
