That dude's being carried around on a crocodile. Turn around Brickbeard, even as a pirate, it's not worth it, these people are hardcore.

By in Australia,

The only classic Pirates set I own, and oh boy is it a good one!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Molded plates were so great.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Amazing and very complete playset, great baseplates, good figures, despite the piece count.

The only pirate captain I had as well back then.

Set got many many years of play, now its partially intact.

From what I remember playing , the bridge included and the little rock on the raised baseplate really helped build river-crossing builds with sharks and the croc underneath.

I used to combine the river with a half 16x32 blue baseplate + 2 of those small 16x16 island print from other sets to make the river border the sea.

By in Australia,

I'd love to see a modern remake of this. Between POBB, this and a new Imperial Fort (with or without a naval ship), we'd have an awesome modern anniversary collection for Pirates.

Islanders was a really interesting subtheme and it's cool to explore other cultures, plus their 'neutrality' was interesting too (whether they are for or against the pirates, Navy or neither was up to you).

Although I do miss raised and detailed baseplates like this, a modern 18+ remake could provide us with some really fun and interesting landscape features.

I got the catamaran and throne, but would have picked this up if I could have afforded it at the time.

Turn around, or you might end up as the main course for dinner! (Just ask Jack Sparrow about cannibals!)*

*Yes, I know not all native islanders were cannibals. But, the LEGO islanders were sometimes depicted in stories as such, even in official media.

Raised baseplates and baseplates with rivers are some of my favorite LEGO parts. Its shame they don't make 'em anymore, though I'd imagine with the upcoming price hikes it's probably better that way.

@MCLegoboy:
That's not Captain Brickbeard (or Captain Redbeard), that's Captain Ironhook. The poor fellow seems to have lost a hand and a leg to that crocodile!

This set seems rather sparsely constructed over its two baseplates. I do like the little pirate sloop though (I think this is the only set to contain the small cloth jib sail). There is also a prison hidden in the back of the tall statue on the right.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Huh, this set is where the statue head in Barracuda Bay comes from!

Gravatar
By in United States,

My friend had this set and I was so jealous. It was simply amazing, and we repurposed those river plates for all kinds of cool things.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I still have it and it's 100 percent complete from when I received it as an adolescent in the 90s. Absolutely incredible playset!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I never bought many of the Islander sets, but gosh, I wish I'd bought more.

I remember being so wowed by the Islanders sets, when I was 11 years old and saw them on the catalogue cover. Like, we had crocodiles now! It was good.

Well spoken here^^ I Wonder If he truly lost His Leg to the 'Island of Fogs' ' crocodiles, since in His First appearance he had both legs intact.

King kahuka was known as Chieftain Quexil and probably was meant to appear as early as 1990. A cancelled follow-up to Pirates Comic 6255 exists, where an Aztec priest appears who's son bears the Same Name as Quexil's: Kothu. Kothu's Brother Thu was the one who spoke the pirate's language (english/french/spanisch?) So he could negotiate with Redbeard's (Roger's) righthand bo'sun will.

The female Islander ist speculated to be Kahuka/Quexil's wife Amaritza.

You mean people don’t croc surf on the regular on your side of the states? Pshh city folk.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the contrast in the two boats.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@LordDunsany:
Nonsense, it also appears in 6292, which is clearly a different set (it’s inside a cave!).

Also, is that an island on the right side of this image, or the photographer’s grilled cheese?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Bucket List set. One of the very best classics of yesteryear. Looking forward to acquiring this one someday.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think the female minifig in this set is what launched my puberty

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wound up finding two of these in different LEGO lots, they do not look like much in the photo, but boy building them showed me how elaborate they were.. Wish I would have kept one.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

It's amazing now that a set this size could be made of only 428 pieces.

Gravatar
By in United States,

One of my favorite sets I had when I was a kid. I put it all back together a few years back. Tons of memories. Also my set was missing a set of legs when I opened it as a kid. Always had to make it look like one of the Islanders was swimming. Picked up a set of legs recently and my mind was blown seeing the difference with having all the figures completed for the first time ever for me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Beautiful baseplate! Great idea and theme! I was lucky enough to get this one as a kid along with most of the other Islanders sets. Just seeing this again makes me reminisce on all the adventures I had with this. Lego should hearken back to more original themes like this and let kids imaginations run wild!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Love the composition of this one. The way the river dips in and out of the scene really makes you feel like you're traveling through an environment, rather than next to one!

Gravatar
By in France,

I have bought it last year, it's beautiful even if it's a bit empty by today's standards. The picture hides it well with the ship's sails

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wait, is that a cheese toastie in the bottom right corner?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Hmmm...well; it's an island, yes...but I'd debate it being 'enchanted'...'uncharted', maybe (as who's come back from from it with mapping done).

Beyond that: wonder how two of those baseplates placed forming a tiny island in the middle would look...

Oh, and an edit: THE ISLANDERS HAVE 'THE POWER OF THE WIND'...NEVER MIND 'HOW'; RUUUUUN!!!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It’s amazing how a set that doesn’t actually have all that much to it still seems so playable and fun. Absolutely makes the best of what it had

Gravatar
By in Germany,

No need to lie, I wanted it for the baseplates. So do you.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

woah! Only 400 pieces for a fantastic set with 2 baseplates? And only for 66$!

LEGO, how can you be so silly?! Come on! You have to remake it with 10x pieces and 10x price!

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Last year Ninjago Islanders was a worthy successor to this subtheme. I wish it lasted longer, but I still managed to collect a small army of those purple natives. 71747 is one of my favorite sets of the last 5 years from lego.

It's because of the baseplates. They alone give you the scenery and a setting upon which you can build your own story, the rest of the bricks are the tools to help you do so.

This is an absolutely adorable set. I wish I had one.

I love cannibalism.

Kudos to the Box art, and adding the non Lego rock / island etc. Its very colourful. I want one now.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

I still have this set from when i was a kid, always called it Indigo Island not sure if it had that name in the UK or just something we made up.

By in United States,

That box art says one thing... Hot Mess!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

That's what happens when you let the trainee design the box art.

Say what you like about the current craze for black boxes (and a lot of people do) just remember it could be a lot worse.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

this is SOOOOO nostalgic for anybody who plays/played lego battles!

Back then, they used to do all box art and catalogues like that, until they decided too early to switch to cheap (=qualitatively bad) cgi around 1997ish.
Treat yourself to the catalogues! They're accessible at brickset.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ah, one of my great regrets! Granted, the 1994 release was never going to happen, but I let the 2000s rerelease (and the Barracuda rerelease!!) pass me by completely.

It's kind of interesting to me that I always think of Islanders as being just a tiny bit "later" than "pure" classic Pirates, and the reason I find this is a bit interesting is that I started being into Pirates (getting my first set and slobbering over pictures in the catalogues) in 1994--but, because I was 7 and this well, well before I would see the Internet in my LEGO life, I was looking at a 1993 catalogue, and wouldn't really see the Islanders in a catalogue for another year or so, which left enough of an impression on me that I still think of them as newer.

Pity that 90s Pirates sets are so desirable--they're so expensive!

Gravatar
By in Latvia,

Would love to see this combined with rest of Islanders sets and that PotC Cannibal Escape set.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ooh it’s a good set today, I missed this in the original releases, got a few of the smaller islanders sets, but I did pick this up about 10 years ago and did have it displayed for about 5 years, maybe it needs to come out again alongside barracuda bay!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I’d always wanted this set since I came out of my dark ages about 7 years ago ….. and I just finished Bricklinking this one literally last week!!!
I got the baseplates and about 3/4 of the parts / figs in a bulk purchase a month or so ago, then simply had to buy the canoe / sails / croc / bridge / couple figs / and a few other parts online! I also found the original instructions cheap on eBay - couldn’t believe my luck!
Very happy with this classic set!…. All put together on a small budget!
I for one love the instruction / box art! (Surprised to read above that some people hate it, and prefer the boring, depressing black “adult theme” boxes!)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ooh, I love this one. I technically don’t have this exact set, as it came during my dark ages, but I got two copies of the Legends reissue 6292 when it was heavily discounted; it was one of the largest sets I had up to that time. As a kid I’d been fascinated by sets like the original Galaxy Explorer that used not one but two specially-shaped 32x32 baseplates to create some huge environment, and this wound up being it, a couple decades later.

$66 dollars in 1994 is $130 in today's money.

If a 428 piece set was released today costing $130 it would be panned for being too expensive.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have this one on display in the living room.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

This set perfectly represent the golden age of Lego.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I love this set and theme, I remember getting this for my 9th birthday. It's an amazing set with lots of play potential.

Lucky I have 4 sets now so one day I can make a big Islander Island :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

My brother has this one! I was just talking about this set last weekend at the Brick Rodeo convention with a MOCer of a Pirates display.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The box art looks like the Islanders are conducting some kind of trade with the Pirates. It's tense but the two factions' leaders are coming out to meet each other rather than a battle scene.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wanted this SO BADLY when I was a kid!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Really really wanted this set as a kid. Drooled over the catalogue for hours. A friend of mine with rich parents had it, I was green with envy.

Bought this on eBay ten years back for sixty bucks or so, including the box. A dream came true when it arrived and then I fell back into the dark age, until the Pirates of Barracuda Bay came out (and my wife was pregnant so I had time to build sets).

This set, together with the two space monorails, are my most precious possessions.

4 conjoined curves were actually shown in the 1994 promotional Diorama.
