There's no parachute... He's gonna go running off the track!

You either die a Hero, or life long enough to see yourself become the villain.
He clearly chose to die a Hero.
Some cool sets in this subtheme for an otherwise average era. Proto-Stuntz.
Barney's signature vehicle and one of the four starter vehicles in LEGO Stunt Rally (5712).
Despite playing that game for hours on end, I never owned any of the actual sets.
By the way, LORE TIME: Barney (the driver) was a kid genius who left school at the age of 5 for a career in the mechanics industry.
LEGO Stunt Rally was so fun as a kid. Loved making custom tracks full of crazy obstacles.
I recently went back and finished Rock Raiders, I should go back to Stunt Rally too and see how it holds up!
This set was much cooler than it's counterpart, the Slow Dragster.
Tires seem kinda runty for a dragster.
The dragster in this is plenty cute and Barney is a great figure, but the picture does not show the horrible little lump of bricks that is the "launcher" for it, it's just a bunch of random pieces for weight so that a hinged bit can slide over a bar at the back to hold it still after you pull the motor back a few times.
Go look at it in the instructions, it's hideous.
"Now THIS is podracing!"
@PurpleDave: That's bothered me about Lego's dragsters for a while. The tires are almost never as big as they should be.
Wow, highest piece count for a set in Town that year: 441. These days in City that’s a mid-range part count and you might get two vehicles out of it, or a building facade and a truck or something.
Looks like the dragsters packing it’s angry eyes, just in case

It was the same with me, but I decided I should collect at least one theme from my childhood, so now I have almost all of the sets from the Town Race theme. I only lack this and 6713 (not counting the polybags).
6616 was better in every way. You could also get both to stage a race.
Had this set back in the day. Took me an embarrassing amount of time to figure out how the motor worked!
It’s a 6890 / 6872 hybrid with wheels

It was also cool seeing the purple recolor of this Set, when using Mr. X or the punker's (forgot his name this time) color schemes.

Definitely. I've always regretted not getting any of the Arctic sets, always thought they look cool (pun intended).
Classic childhood favorite of mine, this one.
