Review: 71456 Mrs. Castillo's Turtle Van
Posted by CapnRex101,The premise of LEGO DREAMZzz presents an opportunity for stunning creativity, so includes some fantastical vehicles and creatures. 71456 Mrs. Castillo's Turtle Van embraces this fantasy approach, although transforms into a standard vehicle too.
On that basis, the Turtle Van could interest City fans, as well anybody looking forward to DREAMZzz. Both the traditional van and turtle seem charming, but the price of £42.99, $47.99 or €47.99 could be off-putting, for this model's size.
Summary
71456 Mrs. Castillo's Turtle Van, 434 pieces.
£42.99 / $47.99 / €47.99 | 9.9p/11.1c/11.1c per piece.

Minifigures
Unsurprisingly, the Dream World is populated by countless unusual characters, many of whom appear in the LEGO range. However, odd characters can also be found in the Waking World, including Mrs. Castillo! An interesting dual-moulded element forms her dress and backpack, with the arms introduced in the Super Mario theme plugged into either side.
Their shape seems decidedly unnatural, so I would have preferred the arms developed for the Minions to be re-used instead. Otherwise, the minifigure looks marvellous. The reddish brown backpack is neatly constructed from an ingot and a 2x1 bow, but could be easily adapted with other accoutrements, depending on Mrs. Castillo's needs during her adventures.
Only the double-sided head and white hair component are retained from standard minifigures and these convey plenty of personality. The decoration on the dress looks lovely as well, even though the white lotus designs are hardly noticeable against the aqua piece. They are visible in renders of the minifigure, but are much less obvious in reality.
Mateo is the protagonist of DREAMZzz and appears in many sets accordingly, so it is fortunate that his minifigure is excellent. The new hair piece is brilliantly textured and its green highlights look nice, corresponding with Mateo's green eye. The torso also features a green strap, which connects to a belt element in other sets. That is omitted here to accommodate a backpack, but the minifigure does feature dual-moulded legs.
Despite appearances, Zoey does not include dual-moulded legs. Nonetheless, her minifigure also captures impressive detail, again featuring a new hair element with fantastic texture. The purple shade is not easily adaptable for other characters, but I hope this piece appears in other colours soon. However, purple hair suits this minifigure, complementing Zoey's dark blue and lavender attire.
Both characters display the Dream Chasers' hourglass symbol, which is also printed on top of Zoey's accessory. A purple bow is also provided, while Mateo carries his brick-built pencil staff. Originally a normal pencil, the staff incorporates a 4L bar and a lightsaber hilt in flame yellowish orange, an uncommon colour for these parts.
The pencil staff suits Mateo, given his love of drawing. That skill brought Z-Blob into existence, a gooey creature able to transform its body. Four versions of the character are available across the range and this example includes the trans-bright green piece designed for the Slime Singer from VIDIYO, albeit without decoration. The eyes are printed on a bright green minifigure head underneath instead.
Z-Blob also incorporates a new body component, shared with a Grimspawn. These nightmare creatures serve the Nightmare King and many are inspired by existing LEGO themes, hence this character wears a knight's helmet. Also, the trans-pink flame is shared by a number of Grimspawn, as they seem to burn with energy in the animated series.
The new body piece is proportionally similar to the now-retired microfigures launched in 2009, albeit featuring a separate head on this occasion. This provides much greater opportunity for customisation and the figures can even interact with accessories because their arms fit over anything with the width of a standard bar, as shown below.
The Completed Model
Mrs. Castillo serves burritos from her van in the Waking World, although adaptations have been made for this set, so the van sells Dream Crafting equipment. The sand green and white colour scheme remains intact from the animation though, while the shape of the vehicle is familiar too. Evidently inspired by the Volkswagen Camper Van, I expect some will customise the design for LEGO City.
The vehicle is eight studs wide, which is relatively substantial, but the designer has definitely taken advantage of that size. For instance, windscreen wipers are included and the doors are functional. A printed Dream Chasers' symbol adorns the front and stickers are applied on the top and side, hinting towards the potential transformation into the Turtle Van.
Mrs. Castillo's pet turtle, Señor Tortuga, is sadly not included, but I like the sticker alluding to him on the side. There is room for two minifigures inside the cab, including Mrs. Castillo, despite her unusual body shape. The roof is detachable to reach the interior, which continues into the back of the van, where minifigures can stand to serve customers.
A few more stickers form a striped awning and signage, advertising Tortuga's Dreamcraft Shop and three of the items available to buy. The serving window looks good, but I dislike the visible studs and clips underneath. While these are needed for the transformation, the exterior is very smooth elsewhere, so perhaps they could have been disguised for the van's appearance in the Waking World.
The items advertised outside are found inside the van, including a potion, a trans-opalescent blue crystal and a mushroom. I appreciate such continuity and the patterned floor, but there is ample space for additional accessories and more are supplied for the van's Dream World forms. These are shown on a blackboard, but not used in the instructions at this stage, strangely.
Sand green is a new colour for the 2x4x2 wheel arches, which look brilliant in combination with the wheels. This is partly because the wheels are actually offset by half a stud, as 1x2 plates with side rails inside prevent the Technic pins moving too far inwards or protruding too much. Another sticker forms the number plate on the back and features the initials of the set designer, Freddy Charters.
Upon entering the Dream World, the whole van becomes a shell for Señor Tortuga. The turtle's legs sprout from the wheels and his head appears on the front, connected to a ball joint. A few accessories are added on top too, alongside Cat Cactus. Once these features are added, the vehicle looks wonderfully wacky, so fits seamlessly into the realm of DREAMZzz.
The head comprises a printed shoulder armour piece and a 1x4 curved window frame, which has not appeared in flame yellowish orange before. The seam between them forms the mouth and the head can move up and down, but sideways motion is very limited. Also, the legs can be positioned as though walking by swapping the curved tube elements around, even though only the feet are actually articulated.
Mrs. Castillo seemingly directs Señor Tortuga by dangling a carrot above him, although the rod holding the carrot should be longer, especially because the turtle cannot actually look upwards. The weapons sketched on the aforementioned blackboard are also mounted on the van in this format, connecting to those clips beneath the serving window.
Various apparently unrelated items are placed on the roof, including a treasure chest, a small palm tree and the mysterious Cat Cactus. This character is present in 71459 Stable of Dream Creatures too, residing in a medium nougat pot and featuring a printed dome. These additions to the van can only be described as bizarre, as I would expect in the Dream World.
Turtles are not known for their speed, but it seems swapping Señor Tortuga's carrot for a chilli pepper sends him into overdrive! A periscope and fin replace the array of items on top in this configuration, while Cat Cactus' pot becomes a thruster. Also, the legs are reconstructed as though swept back by the sheer speed of the vehicle.
I imagine this will be the least popular of the three possible designs, although I think the rocket-propelled turtle is a fun concept. The dual-moulded flame on the back looks superb, combining flame yellowish orange and trans-yellow plastics. This piece is available in several DREAMZzz sets and in five different colours, but the yellow-tinted version only appears twice.
Cat Cactus also becomes rocket-propelled, as the trans-purple flame used as a blade earlier becomes a thruster. In addition, the cactus' pink flower is replaced with a golden spike on top and a saddle for a minifigure is connected to the back, presumably because this is considered the cactus' battle mode!
Not every piece is used for each of the Turtle Van's configurations, but this one includes almost all of them. The treasure chest and palm tree, for instance, are attached on a 4x4 round plate, previously used to display the weapons. A crystal is found inside the chest and the palm tree looks fantastic, making excellent use of the fern components introduced in 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell.
Overall
Comparisons have been drawn between DREAMZzz and the sets from The LEGO Movie, as both include relatively mundane subjects that can transform into something fantastical. 71456 Mrs. Castillo's Turtle Van undoubtedly lives up to this comparison. The outlandish nature of the design will not appeal to everyone, but I find it charming, especially given the ponderous turtle mode.
The three options for building the Turtle Van are appealing and you can switch between them quickly, as they only require partial reassembly. However, not all the pieces are used for each design, which could lead to concerns about the price of £42.99, $47.99 or €47.99. That seems expensive to me, but I still find the set appealing on the whole.

I’d have adored these as a kid. I can appreciate it now, but not for my collection.
It's nice to see a new series that doesn't try to shoehorn trying to get people to use their phone with the sets.
I love many of the sets, but I am SO dissapointed in show. Its somehow as bad as Chima animated series.
I always am a fan of Lego cooking up new IPs. This one in particular seems pretty wild.
Mrs. Castillo’s weird gumby arms are definitely more Nightmarez for me, though.
This line is so bonkers in a good way. I hope it does well and I hope it really inspires children (of all ages) to create their own things!
Too much spicy food for the turtle and blast off!!
I like it
I really want a bunch of the fern. Hopefully it'll be on B&P soon.
Wow, I really love that un-modified van!!
I like that essentielly this is a 3 in 1 set without having to go through the chore of breaking and rebuilding the entire set 3 times
As a fan of the classics, I love the ol' carrot on the fishing rod gag. But I'm not sure what to make of this line. I don't normally watch the shows, so for me, a line has to be able to stand on its own without the media tie-in. On that level, this one mostly works for me, but I'm also not a fan of the turtle parts not being somehow integrated (a la Transformers) into the model. I know that's a big ask, and I suspect that's just my Transformers fan-bias speaking. Still, 8-wide means it should fit right in perfectly with Speed Champions!
Mrs. Castillo's arms are definitely disproportionate. They look very creepy.
Absolutely crackers. Love it! They really should have cut to the chase and called the theme SPLIFFZzz though!
The price still seems a little high to me, but I love the concept and the execution of this set! This entire theme looks like it's going to be a lot of fun!

I've been that turtle. StyleCounselor likes his food spicy, his music funky, his women a little saucy, and his drinks strong!
Nice review. Great set. Reasonable price. Am I dreaming?
Those little figs are so much fun! A turtle van that serves mushrooms. I think we have one of those here in Colorado.
Too bad about that dress printing. What is it with Lego and bright colors?! Let's GO!!!! (obligatory Bill Walton reference- he'd be all over this sort of set idea).
I thought Mrs. Castillo was a ghost at first because I didn’t see any legs. Then the arms made me think she was a ghost! Furthermore, you stuck her on a clear piece — which gave more an impression that she’s a ghost because she’s floating. That was an odd choice. What a bizarre and a unique torso/dress piece.
Like the LEGO Movie sets, I really like the "normal" model.
I really like this set! Will get for my city.
Looks fun, but I am not in the mood for fun at the moment.
Anyway, quite a nice set and full of imagination. The transformation feature reminds me a bit of Hidden Side.
My Mum loves this set, it really makes her laugh
The theme does well and we get loads of cool sets. The theme does poorly and we get some heavily discounted sets.
Either way we win.
I'm not sold on this set but I am intrigued by the line. I really liked Hidden Side, even if it didn't last very long.
Funky and imaginative designs and characters without resorting to crazy colour combinations. That's a very proper lego line and I am very pleased with it. This van looks very tempting!

A helpful mnemonic: themes that sell poorly, get canned prematurely; themes that meet an early grave, do not get a second wave.
If you like it, just buy it."
If you wait, you're tempting fate. If you buy, you may later cry. Do or do not, there is no try.
Thanks for the review.
I enjoyed watching the first 10 episodes on YouTube.
I hope the line does well.

My sons and me have figured out Mrs. Castillo is some kind of turtle herself. The arms? Her head and mouth, the heavy pack on her back? Turtle she is! (like by growing older she turned into the shape of her pet!)

It sure does! And other sets like 71543 and 40657 also look adorable while having an even better ppp, though of course that's not the be all end all. I hope kids like it.
@CapnRex101 could we get the lagomorph tag on 71543?
I need cat cactus.
Nice. Will pick one up when it goes on clearance
I've been waiting for those wheel arches since before the set was revealed. I need two for a sand green '50's car MOC I've had laying around since April / May.
Of course, when you say "turtle van," I think of an IP Lego doesn't have anymore. Cowabunga, dudes!
Great choice of set to review first for DreamZzz. It almost feels a shame it’s still over a month away for the general public because I love almost all the bonkers designs. The TV show is way better than I initially expected too. I don’t know why someone higher up said they didn’t like it.
@yellowcastle said: "If you wait, you're tempting fate. If you buy, you may later cry. Do or do not, there is no try."
It's such a gamble.
Having said that, I'd be lying if I said that I hadn't been doing this lately. I picked up a heap of great Monkie Kid sets on clearance, same with the Eternals and Avatar lines. I'm just waiting for the Jurassic Park sets to start getting clearanced out.
So excited for more Dreamzzz reviews!
I'm kind of tempted by this one for the Zoey minifig
@Ridgeheart:
Her arms are limp spaghetti.
@TheOtherMike:
The deco on the roof certainly suggests the van used to be yellow.
Just read the shark ship review on BrothersBrick. I need these sets!
Lego's taking it up a notch. If they put this much effort into SW sets, they'd make another billion dollars.

I thought it was better than Chima. Chima I could barely watch because the characters' voices got on my nerves. Also the obsession with "plugging chi" got annoying fast. The Dreamzzz crew have nice voices and an interesting story/villain. My only complaint right now is that "turkeys" is getting overused.
Gamera van! Giant flying turtle... has to be intentional.
I though those arms were introduced in "Minions 2-The Rise of Gru" sets...:|
@TheOtherMike: Yeah...in my 'head canon' I can see 'Leo' and the guys walking out of 'the woods' (in dreamland); see the van...and get confused...:)
Also: the only thing I'm not crazy about is that tree...donno, looks more like a 'signpost' than a tree, think it's the leaves...
@brick_r:
Minion arms have some semblance of an elbow, and they accept normal hands so they can wear black gloves and hold items at jaunty angles and such. These…are limp spaghetti, with fused wrists.
I don't know what Lego Certified Professionals think of Dreamzzz, but I'd be pretty certain if a contestant on Lego Masters submitted something like this, the judge would say "There's too much going on here, too many ideas". If they just did a campervan turning into a turtle, that could work. But nope, they needed rocket boosters, a cat-actus (WTF even is that???) a Pirates theme beach scene, a weird magic shop thing, crazy flames and super weird characters.
I don't like the comparison to The Lego Movie sets. They had a clear, tangible idea. Eg a normal, reasonably realistic plumber's van which turns into a propeller plane that shoots plungers (which is funny). Or a normal, pretty regular ice cream truck that turns into a space ship which shoots ice cream like lasers/guns. You can clearly tell what's going on without needing to see The Lego Movie or even read the box.
Whereas the whole Dreamzz theme is like 1970s musicians' songs after they have consumed illicit drugs and a bunch of alcohol. And that's not a good thing.
For those that like the theme, I would encourage you to consider how you would describe the theme to someone who hasn't seen, and can't see it. Now Atlantis for example is very clear. Good guy humans in red submarines fighting giant mutant sea creatures for special keys to find the lost city of Atlantis. But what the hell is Dreamzz? You couldn't describe it without someone getting very, very confused.
As for this set specifically, one thing I would like to say is that if you put the weird, wacky, unclear stuff out of the way and consider the 'normal' mode, it doesn't work. The plumber's van in Flying Flusher set was excellent and looked good. Whereas here like what even is Dream Crafting Equipment???, the van is oversized/out of proportion and has very little interior detail.
Lego has previously made sets with a 'normal' and 'weird' version, Hidden Side was good at this. The spooky cargo train, you can put straight into a realistic City layout in it's normal mode and you wouldn't even know. Whereas this it's not clear what's going on, like why couldn't we have had a regular taco van? And what on earth is a taco-turtle?? Indeed, what is wrong with just having an ordinary taco vendor truck that ends up as the shell of an ordinary turtle?
@Brickchap said:

It might be a hard concept for you you to grasp but this is more fun than an ordinary taco truck or ordinary tortoise. Whismy and wonder.
@AgentKallus
The idea is an ordinary taco truck that can turn into an ordinary tortoise. That's fun and makes sense. Note that I do wish to clarify that something doesn't have to be realistic to make sense, Ninjago, Atlantis, Powers Miners are all examples of this. But Dreamzz makes no sense. 'Whimsy and wonder' might work as a PR catchphrase, but not for a proper Lego theme.
Not the "Turtle Van" i was looking for. I read the title and instantly thought of TMNT. Maybe Lego will bring it back someday...
I love all the ideas packed in here. It's a great model of a VW Camper Van, and to have it fused with the tortoise in the dream world is a bit of genius and wonderful imagination. Although if you'll excuse me for a moment...
IT'S NOT A TURTLE, IT'S A TORTOISE!
There, that's better. Anyway, the price is a bit high, but I think that maybe because you only make one version of the model at a time. With all the pieces laid out it might seem better value. There's a surprising number of figures in there too, for a set of this size. Just a shame, as has been mentioned, the real-world little tortoise isn't included. But then so far LEGO have only made a dopey-eyed Friends tortoise, or minifig-scale sea turtles.

Mrs. Castillo actually refers to Señor Tortuga as both a turtle and a tortoise at different points in the animated series. I assume that is because the word tortuga can mean either, so maybe there is some intentional ambiguity.

You seem to be trying to tell people who like this that they're Incorrect for liking it and should change their minds.
Will definitely get this once it settles to around £30 on Amazon.
I think DREAMZzz might end up being only the 2nd theme (after Speed Champions) where I'm tempted to get every release!
All tortoises are turtles.
Not all turtles are tortoises.
Mrs. Castillo spends her free time at the gym.
Absolute unit.
I have no idea how many of these sets I’ll end up buying but my gif it’s good to see Lego doing something so playful and outrageous
Wow, this is great. This whole line looks like it’ll be full of win.

Maybe where you're from, but not where Brickset is hosted! ;-)
Plenty of languages do only have one word; 'Tortuga', 'Schildkröte', 'Chelona' etc. (Note to self - Brickset doesn't like Greek script!). But English is one of the few languages with separate words for 'Tortoise', 'Turtle' and 'Terrapin' (on land, at sea, and in freshwater, respectively, in the Englishman's understanding of English).
I'm not sure why American-English uses 'Turtle' to refer to the entire class of Chelonids whereas English-English usage is distinct. It may be down to the older form of English spoken by the first American settlers, or perhaps down to the influence of other languages such as Spanish with only the single word, 'Tortuga'. Then again, the distinction in England may be down to a late 1960s boom in keeping non-native Greek spur-thighed tortoises as relatively low-maintenance pets.
I'm (unreliably) informed that typical Indian usage of English goes completely the other way, and sea turtles and terrapins are all referred to as 'tortoises'. This seems to stem from 'Kurma', the second avatar of Vishnu, being depicted as something like an Indian pond terrapin, but striding on firm legs from the ocean to the land bearing Vishnu. That or myths of the legs of a sea turtle being used to prop up the heavens, faithfully ignoring the fact that sea turtles don't have legs.
And it doesn't look like the Chinese, Hindus, or Mesoamericans are going to agree anytime soon on exactly what those four elephants that support the world are standing on the back of!
@Joefish
We could discuss American English versus British English all day- and probably understand each other about half of the time!
:-D
It's every tortoise's right to identify as a turtle.... or a hedgehog if it so desires.
I love this concept.
I suspect this base model will be quite popular.

They are only a part of the Ninjago promotional shorts, which is a disapointment.

I was disappointed that the show doesn't use a Lego-built universe akin to The Lego Movie.

None of the Lego TV shows do. Ninjago, Chima, Nexo Knights, Monkie Kid, even the old Atlantis TV movie and Unikitty TV show never made the full brick world... it's way easier to render the way they currently do.
It's probably unintentional, seems a tad problematic to have Mrs. Castillo selling tacos and burritos by day and shrooms, crystals, and a potion by night. Though she is slightly breaking the stereotype by not selling any plants.

"I love many of the sets, but I am SO dissapointed in show. Its somehow as bad as Chima animated series."
I thought it was better than Chima. Chima I could barely watch because the characters' voices got on my nerves. Also the obsession with "plugging chi" got annoying fast. The Dreamzzz crew have nice voices and an interesting story/villain. My only complaint right now is that "turkeys" is getting overused."
I quite enjoyed the show, although I'd say they could have done better in some areas. Also, I was expecting more of the sets to actually show up. 71457 , 71458 and 71459 seemed to have no role whatsoever, even though at some parts I was thinking, "Oh, so this is where the crocodile car comes into the story!", but no. They are only a part of the Ninjago promotional shorts, which is a disapointment.
For those who haven't seen the show, it's definetly worth checking out."

Darn shame. I would be a lot more interested if any of them were.

"But English is one of the few languages with separate words for 'Tortoise', 'Turtle' and 'Terrapin' (on land, at sea, and in freshwater, respectively, in the Englishman's understanding of English)."
Apparently, not all land-living turtles are tortoises.
There seems to be some discrepensies, not only between the languages, but also between the languages and biology.
Anyhoe: I like Dreamzzz. When the sets go in serious discount, I'm planning to buy almost the entire wave..."
