Review: 41753 Pancake Shop

Posted by ,

It's getting close to the end of the year, so we're close to the end of Friends reviews from this year.

The penultimate Friends set I'll be looking at this year is 41753 Pancake Shop. The other small sets have packed a lot of story in them, so I expect this same for this one - it's the perfect stocking stuffer size.

Summary

41753 Pancake Shop, 157 pieces.
£8.99 / $10.99 / €9.99 | 5.7p/7.0c/6.4c per piece.
Buy at LEGO.com »

A fun little stocking-stuffer size set

  • Printed pancake pieces
  • Minidoll character in wheelchair at affordable price
  • None!

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Inside the box there are three unnumbered bags, an 8x8 half circle plate, instruction book, and a small sticker sheet with only two stickers (no picture).

Minidolls and animals

There are two minidolls in this set, Luna and Paisley. We last saw Luna in 41751 Skate Park. Her purple wheelchair is very snazzy! She's meeting up with Paisley for a brunch date. Paisley has a pretty sleeveless bolus with a metallic pattern and navy accents, which match well with her skirt. Paisley's bunny is along for the excursion, and is undoubtedly hoping for leftovers.

However, it looks like a giant carrot is on the menu for the bunny, who also gets a tree to rest under.

Completed model

The whole set is a small build, but there are some side builds to the shop. A board menu shows the different varieties of pancakes on offer. A table with two glasses and two places (one with a plate of waffles - a printed piece), and a stool.

The stool allows Luna to enjoy some pancakes with a passer-by while Paisley is making the rest of the waffles.

(Note: passer-by sloth not included in this set).

The shop itself is quite quaint. I love the brick-built sign at the top - it's very clear what you can find here! On the counter there's a rather high flame, some additional pancakes on the griddle, and two containers - presumably for syrup and butter. Love the addition of some greenery and a little ladybug.

The back of the shop shows the till, and the controls for the griddle. Connected on one side of the shop is a large stand mixer, so the shop has everything it needs to make brunch.

Overall thoughts

This is a fun little set, and perfect for an impulse buy. It's nice to see Luna again, and also to see Paisley coming out of her shell a little bit. The addition of the tree scene for the bunny rounds out the set nicely, and plenty of Friends details can be found. I particularly like the pancake sign with the chocolate sauce and fruit on top.

If you're looking for a stocking stuffer for your Friends fan, this is a nice choice.

I don’t habitually get Friends stuff, but I really like this set; there’s a lot of excellent fine details in it, which made it an easy purchase. Unfortunately the black element on top of the pancakes gives me flashbacks to the Minions hair piece, and ends up making them kind of unappetising.

Someone is slacking at their job. This shop doesn’t look even a little bit like it’s been pancaked!

The heck? That _is_ Otto’s scalp! They made it in bright-light-orange for 10315, which would kinda work as a pat of butter. This looks more like Wisconsin margarine (it’s a thing, look it up).

By in Ireland,

Great review as always.
It's a really nice, cheap set with some excellent parts. I had to get it just for the pancake print alone! They really packed a lot of little details into such a small set.

Neat little set. Got it a while ago. Agree with @Mister_Johnny, though. The pancake stack looks odd and could have been done better with some other elements.

By in France,

I like how it's a very neat little set and a very affordable way to get a Friends character with a wheelchair

This actually looks kinda cute! And the $11 price is pretty reasonable too.

Nice review, thanks.

It was little sets like this that I used to get for my daughter 10 or so years ago. When we were shopping for Uni stuff recently, she saw the new Friends sets and didn't recognise any of the characters - so there I was, trying to explain that Stephanie and co. had grown-up, and this is the new line.

I assumed it was being used as a dollop of some sort of blueberry or blackberry compote.

I hope the irony wasn’t lost on her.

@Lyichir:
What? No. Blueberries are purple. Unless they’re fresh, in which case they’re a pale green. That’s totally a thing, too. Once you freeze or blenderize blueberries, a chemical in the skin will stain the minty green interior purple. Only the actual exterior of the skin looks blue, and really only when it’s fresh. At no point should they ever look black. I grew up in the blueberry capital of the world. I know these things.

Cute little set, and it's packed with details. That's what i like about the small friends sets. Also, the reason why the flame is so high is so that you can "extinguish" it with the included extinguisher.

Blueberries themselves are purple, but a thick blueberry compote can look quite dark. An example: https://cdn.loveandlemons.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/blueberry-compote-1.jpg

I feel like black is a closer match to this sort of color than other colors like dark red, dark blue, or even dark purple.

Based on the first picture, I couldn't see the bunny so I thought it was extremely odd that a pancake shop also sold carrots, something that traditionally doesn't go with pancakes, at least in my experience. :D

@Lyichir:
Sure, the way the light hits it can make parts of it look black, and dark-purple isn’t dark enough to do that, but using black parts just eliminates any hint of purple. So, you’ve got three options. You can say you mixed in some heavy cream to lighten it up just enough that dark-purple works (even though the blueberries shouldn’t need the assist). You can say it’s blackberry instead (in which case you should be shunned for picking blackberries when blueberries were clearly an option). Or you can go over the surface with a purple Sharpie to lend it that hint of purple sheen (in which case someone might mistakenly try to eat that tasty looking morsel).

@xccj:
My mom used to get a little too experimental. I’ve been served pancakes that had kernels of sweet corn mixed in. Also cooked rice, I believe. And no warning before taking the first bite.

If this was a City set it would come with a fire engine for the same purpose:

I mean, you’re not wrong. They did it with a burger joint already.

By in United Kingdom,

I have this set and I think it's okay, it's reasonably interesting for the size and the price, and it's good to see them adding inclusivity at lower price levels.
My only gripes are the 'chair' for Paisley and the table feel a bit odd, she falls off very easily and the table feels an odd size, but I doubt there's much that could be done about either without specialised pieces.
