Review: 60367 Passenger Airplane

Posted by ,

This review has been written in its entirety by William, aged 8, who's the son of one of my cycling friends. He has previously reviewed Minecraft sets for us but his real passion is building runways and airports in his living room, so he was the natural choice to ask to review the new City plane, 60367 Passenger Airplane.

I was very excited to build and review the airplane, I love airplanes. My first impression when I looked at the box was that it looks so cool. I thought the tail looked a bit funny, but I couldn’t wait to build it. I was really excited that there was a pushback truck as part of the kit. I’ve tried to make one of these before myself, but the one in the kit looks much better than mine.

Summary

60367 Passenger Airplane, 913 pieces.
£89.99 / $119.99 / €99.99 | 9.9p/13.1c/11.0c per piece.
Buy at LEGO.com »

A good-sized plane with loads of accessories to play with

  • Pushback truck is great
  • Lots of cool details inside the plane
  • Tail is a bit funny
  • Wheels do not fold into the fuselage

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Minifigures

The pilots have changed from the previous City aircraft set. They are missing their security tags, tie pins and belt, so do not have as much detail on them as the old pilots, but other than that, they look really cool. They have a flight pin and shoulder stripes.

The ground crew have very bright-coloured suits. I really like the luminous yellow jackets. The lady has a hearing aid and the men have yellow protection glasses. There is a lot of detail.

There are four passengers. My favourite passenger is carrying a really big camera. I think he is a plane spotter. One lady has a very colourful top and the other has a suitcase that can open and close.

The aircraft

The plane is a great size for playing with, it has lots of detail. There are stickers with the airline logo “AIR”. I like the logo but I would have called it “LEGO Air.” I did not have any problems applying the stickers to any of the parts.

The engines are far more detailed and bigger than on the old LEGO plane. The engines use a lot more bricks then I expected, they are much better than the old plane, and I was excited to build them. They are much more secure than the engines on the old plane. They have used tubes to secure them to the plane wing.

The wheels are one of my favourite bits. You have to make them out of bumpy tyres and tubes. The other LEGO planes use wheels that are already made. It's very clever how they have made the wheels more sturdy with a rod attached to the undercarriage. It would have been extra good if the wheels had folded up into the fuselage.

The wings have wingtips that are a different colour to the rest of the wing of the plane. The lights at the end of the wingtips are very realistic. The right side is red and the left side is green. This is the same as real plane. I really like the cargo door and cargo storage area situated at the back of the plane.

It is very easy to take the roof and the cockpit roof off the plane. When the roof is taken off it stays as one big part. The tube pieces they have used to join the roof pieces together make it very strong and stable. Inside the plane there is also a refreshment trolley with a can of coke and a cup of tea or coffee on top. It is really narrow and fits down the aisle.

There is a business class area. In business class they have screens on the seats in front of them. The screens look really good. The seats are a different colour to show they are a different class. They did not have this in the old plane.

There is a toilet at the back of the plane. The sink in the toilet uses a LEGO gun for the tap, which is very clever. I think it’s a bit odd that the toilet has a window, this is not true to life thankfully. I love the detail of the toilet door and the sink, the actual toilet is just one circle block which doesn’t look that good. There is an archway to the cockpit which is very clever. The cockpit has three controls and is more detailed than the old LEGO passenger plane.

The tail of the plane looks a bit odd to me. I looked it up and it is called a ‘V design’ tail. I think it would have looked better if it had a more traditional looking tail with one larger vertical tail attached to the fuselage and two smaller stabilizers. It would be great if the tail had more detail and even moving parts like a real plane. It’s a shame they have just used two pieces of LEGO with no detail for each of the tail pieces.

Vehicles

There is a shuttle bus included in the set. I like the way the door opens, it reminds me of a Lamborghini. I haven’t seen a bus with a door like this in real life. There are no seats, and it’s a bit small but I’m still pleased it was included in the set.

There is a handling truck which carries the steps, luggage carrier and food truck. I love these extra parts to the kit, it makes playing with it much more fun. The steps are exactly the right height for the plane door. The luggage carrier fits in the back door of the plane perfectly. It comes with some luggage. The luggage is a bit small. It is smaller than the carry-on bag the passenger is carrying. It would have been better if the luggage was the same or bigger than the passengers' luggage. I like the cones and the siren on the truck.

The catering truck is really cool. I like the way it rises up and down, to be able to be put on to the plane at exactly the right height. It moves up and down very easily.

I love the pushback truck that is included in the set. I’ve tried to make one myself, but this one is much better. It is really easy to connect and disconnect from the plane and it works well.

Conclusion

This was one of my favourite LEGO sets that I’ve made, and it took me about 5/6 hours to build. I found it fairly easy to build and only slightly struggled with the toilet door on page 55. I love all the extra parts that make it great fun to play with.

There are still a few improvements that could be made. It would be great if the wheels could have folded up into the fuselage. The tail is not realistic to life because they are no passenger planes with a ‘V design’ tail. I also would have preferred more detail with the tail of the plane, it would have been nice to have some more realistic moving parts like stabilisers.

Smaller things like the luggage and the toilet detail could also be improved. All in all though this is a big improvement on the old plane and I loved building it.

My mum says that it is good value for money as it has a lot of play value.

Thanks William!

Welcome back, William. Thanks for this solid review, well done.

Yeah, the tail is a bit strange, but I like it all the same. The same goes for those MASSIVE engines. It's weird, it's different! I appreciate that.

I think I should point out that between the trenchcoat and the tactleneck, there is zero chance of Green Luggage Passenger not being a spy, an assassin, or both. I need to know who she is, and I need several copies of that torso.

Great job, William, thanks for the thorough review!

I love these reviews, they're good reminders that these sets are aimed at kids and that the bits I might not care for myself can be a big plus for them.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

The minifigs are gorgeous, though, everything else aside. I hope those torso designs show up in smaller sets next year.

By in Belgium,

There are airplanes with windows in the toilet.

Great review!! Sometimes AFOL's forget that Lego is a game for children. :-)

Great review! So many nice details in this set. If only that tail was more conventional, it looks so odd and not in keeping with the build quality and attention to detail elsewhere.

By in Portugal,

Hey, it's nice to have kids reviewing sets! Good one!

Solid piece of writing, W. Keep it up!

I would really have appreciated your thoughts about the value/money. I know enough about what mum says.

I do like the V-tail. Looks like the future. Good interior design.

I don't think it's reasonable to ask an 8-year-old to make a judgement about vaule for money!

Yes you are probably right but you can't be sure nowadays :)

Check the color balance, remove brightness. I can barely see the where the background ends and the model begins.

By in United States,

Always nice to see reviews by the target audience. And I agree With William that "Lego Air" would have been better. And he's right that V-tails aren't used on planes as big as this. My main issue with that tail, though, is the angle it's set at; seems too steep to me, although it's better than 4619! (Yes, I realize that saying "It's more realistic than a Jack Stone set" is damning with faint praise...) I also agree with him that the ancillary vehicles are neat.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Fantastic review William, this set was on my 'maybe' list, but reading your review, particularly about the vehicles has tipped it on to the 'must get' list.

It’s funny that I’m reading this review on a plane, just happened to open this page before I’m about to fly.

Colour balance is deliberately slightly towards blue, and the photos are not over-exposed although I agree that it's not ideal photographing white models on a light grey background.

She can be seen checking into the hotel in the 60380 Downtown set...just why she is visiting LEGO City is a well kept secret.

Given the past few years, I think it's especially unreasonable (I assume that you mean insubstantial or subjective). Yet, that makes it all the more informative.

I have a newly-minted 17-yr-old. I find it infinitely interesting to get his varying ideas about value. An 8-yr would undoubtedly be a refreshing contrast.

To me after all, a toy that is worth it to W would be a much better purchase than something that pleases his mom. As a dad/uncle, I want to please my kid/nieces/nephews for Xmas. I really don't care what my brother/sister thinks about it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Great review.

Personally I could do without the plane, and would rather see a more substantial version of the luggage carrier(more wagons) and a larger shuttle bus.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I like new pilot torsos: now you can have pilot boarding the plane wearing the jacket, and pilot in their seat, comfortably working without the jacket

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Great job William!

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Best City plane since the iconic 7893. Detailed, cool design and more importantly: with a proper amount of seats for the passengers given its size. It was a bit irritating that the last ones were massive yet had the same seating of the little 6368.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Great review for a actually surprisingly nice playset. The price is still too high for me and I would rate this a 80€ set.
But what I don't get is why Lego is not fixing their color problem with stickers. They do know what actual color the bricks have where a sticker is placed so it should be a really easy thing to change the sticker background to match that brick color better than it does right now. The photos clearly show how much the sticker color differs from the actual brick color. Seems thoughtless or they really don't care.

I'm a bit sceptical.....

"The tail is not realistic to life because they are no passenger planes with a ‘V design’ tail."

Relly written by William aged 8, feels a bit more like an AFOL opinion,

"My mum says that it is good value for money"

£90 for this set....not sure how well mum values money?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Paul_DLH: Nonsense. It's quite possible for an 8 year old boy to know enough about passenger planes to know there are none (no large airliners) with a V tail. I was one myself.

But then it wouldn't be a "passenger plane" set, would it? I'd like a full airport line of sets too, but if we're only getting one airport set this year this one is pretty great.

An 8 year old just knows he's onto a good thing when Lego regularly comes free from Dad's cycling mate!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I agree with young William about the V tail.

Honestly I’m not sure why Lego chose to do this instead of a regular tail fin, which is something that kids would see at the airport in real life. Feels a bit more like the futuristic ‘World City’ than the current City line.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Thank you William. It is very refreshing to have input from a younger fan. Sometimes adults forget that everyone has very valuable perspectives. Love it!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I enjoy the reviews with input from the target audience, kids. I was also pleased that even a child recognized the impracticability of the V-Tail on a transport category aircraft. I'm too partial to the four-stud wide aircraft of my youth to buy this, but I can see how it would appeal to the younger generations of Lego fans.

Fun fact, the Airbus A220 does have a window in the lavatory, at least in some configurations. No one is going to see you going at 30,000 feet and even on the ground someone would have to practically press their face right up against the window to see you. It seems weird because its different, but it does make notoriously "cozy" aircraft lavatories seem more spacious.

I think it's more than reasonable to ask an 8-year old about value. Just because they don't pay bills doesn't mean they don't have a concept of what's cheap and what's overpriced. When my kids were that age we found it easy to relate everything to the cost of a Lego Death Star. They had a good concept of what that cost since they gave up everything for Christmas one year to get it. Then we could say that our car is worth 300 Lego Death Stars and they got it.

Solid review William, Huw needs to watch out.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I am significantly more impressed by that review than by the set itself. Mind you, it is a great set and I would love to have it as a kid - but as an AFOL, not so much (and then there is always the space issue). But this review is top notch. Very thorough. Probably an exercise that will give this kid a very good start in life - kudos to you kid, well done!

By in France,

Excellent set, indeed, and excellent review William. As good as any adult could have done. Hopefully your passion for Lego will last long, with many, many beautiful sets such as this one. Christmas is approaching ;)

Yes its friends one.

You were a large airliner with a V tail? That’s AWESOME!!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I don't get why LEGO invented new (and ugly) plane parts when the parts in a set like 3182 are (IMO) much better looking (the front nose especially)

Gravatar

Excellent review. Thanks very much. Yes the weird tail!.... Always love the maintenance vehicles tho :o)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not sure why all of these people are so interested in a kid giving their opinion on value for money. Just appreciate the review for what it is. I guarantee most all of you are saying it’s too expensive anyways.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Think the passenger at the front of the 1st class section is going to be confused as their in-flight map is upside down in the photo. They won't know if they are coming or going.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks William. Is the wing piece the same as in older city planes like 7893? Or is a new piece (or two peices)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I normally skim past the opening paragraph for reviews on this site and get to the main body itself, so I was surprised by the notably different cadence and sentence composition of this review, and then that statement on value made me double-take to read that crucial intro. For an eight-year-old it's a pretty solid review and I hope William continues to develop his writing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Awesome review.

The plane is good but the included vehicles really make the set. They definitely give you something to do with the plane before you zoom it around the house.

As you pointed out, Lego is expensive. A kid's point of view on value is quite valuable to me.

Is there anything worse than spending a lot on a gift only for the child to shrug and toss it aside?

A great gift lies at the intersection of a child's perception, the amount Lego charges, and my willingness to pay.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So wait, what is the "old plane"? Is it the one from 2020?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow that was a really well written review. Excellent work, William! I also am pleased with the value for the money. It’s only slightly marked up over other City sets here in the States.

Unfortunately I don’t have room for such a massive aircraft and my children are more interested in other Themes. But my younger self would have loved this plane, too!

This would also explain the suspicious man with the spy camera, and maybe the tourist that has nothing identifying about him. Who knows, with the gun in the bathroom, maybe this is just a very interesting scene we don't know about yet

Sudden twist: all four passengers are assassins, each of them paid to take out the other three. Will there be temporary truces? Alliances? Ex-romances suddenly flaring up again, only to be quashed by the lure of cold, hard money? Who will be left standing by the end of the day? What will they gain, and will it cost them?

Dang, this set is just full of intrigue.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Excellent review William!
Personally I don't like that everything is so supersized right now. My favourite plane is still 6368 which is only four studs wide :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

This was a very well written review! Thank you William, I hope we see more reviews from you in the future. I definitely prefer this plane design to the last one since there's a lot more interior space.

Gravatar
By in United States,

First, I want to commend William for his observations and his clarity in putting them down in written form. I hope we'll have the joy and privilege of his reviews for years to come.

Second, as a former aircraft mechanic and a general fan of aviation and aircraft design, I applaud William's knowledge of aircraft structures, especially stabilizers, his desire for retractable landing gear, the lack of which I have bemoaned for many, many years (I'm so glad this desire is being expressed by a person well within LEGO's target demographic for this set- it shows that kids understand and want realistic functions, and I hope LEGO's reading this review and taking notes), his observation of the larger engines ( high bypass turbofan engines where the head fan produces around 90% of the engine's thrust), the cockpit layout, the disparity in luggage sizes and where they're being stored in the set (great eye, William!), and even the V-tail design. V-tails aren't too common now on aircraft, but more and more future designs are implementing it, and I applaud the set designers for incorporating it here. However, as William pointed out, neither the rear stabilizers nor the wings have moving surfaces, and while I understand the need for stability, finding a way to incorporate those realistic features into future City aircraft would be appealing to kids both young and old. Finally, along with William, I share the enjoyment of all the well-executed ground support equipment, from the exceptional tug (pushback vehicle), to the scissorlift galley servicing cart, the airstairs, the realistically shaped cargo bin and alcove within the plane, and the e-bus to ferry the passengers. I've seen complaints that there's no terminal, and it's a fair complaint. However, I like the amount of effort that went into both the plane and ground equipment to give them more realism and functionality. I'm sure we'll get a terminal in a future set, there are terminals in previous sets, or one can build their own terminal because it's LEGO, and that's the beauty of this hobby. High marks, William. Play well, and keep the reviews coming!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great review William! I love the detail on this set like the restroom and IFEs, but honestly I still prefer Passenger Plane 7893 as my favorite. I agree, the V-tail is very weird.

Still wish they kept the old cockpit mould...

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Thanks for the review. Just prefer one vertical and two horizontal stabilisers.
Instead of defining the light colours: "The right side is red and the left side is green.", I'd say it's the other way round, from the viewpoint of the plane. Star board is green, and port side is red.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would have rather seen this set retail for $100 minus the side builds.
