One-seater car, two robbers, and a hungry bear. One of these two crooks clearly hasn’t thought things through, but judging by the looks of them it’s hard to say which one.

By in Canada,

This bear holds so many fond recollections for me as the forest police sets were some of the earliest I and my (now 11-yo) son built when he was 4 and 5. We played well with this one and the police station. I think we even had some early reader City books that had stories about these sets and figures. Horrible writing but good memories.

This set is awesome. I've always liked the "robber hideout sets" because of how unique and scarce they are. but it seems Lego would rather make ANOTHER police station.

By in Australia,

Given that their escape vehicle looks like a coffin with wheels, I think the robbers should've put a bit more thought into their hide-out, because stashing their loot next to a bear cave was probably not a great plan.

Forest Police was a very nice subtheme for the usually dull Police line. One of the first subthemes that really injected new life into LEGO City, which stagnated badly in the early 00s.

I’d still love to see a proper “National Park” City subtheme. Sets could include rescue vehicles, visitor center and cabins, RVs and other recreational vehicles, and new animals like moose and beavers.

Nice ride... Too bad it's wasted on some crooks. I love Lego hotrods, they should make more.

And Bison bison! I’ll only agree to this if I can get fluffy cows for idiot minifigs to try to pet. Like the NPS poster:

It's every person for themselves. like saying goes there's no honor among thieves.

Funny how this set comes today since yesterday minifig was another criminal."

“I don’t have to outrun the bear-I just have to outrun you.”

I was thinking the same thing. Moreover, this further emphasizes the problem of Lego City criminals always wearing prison stripes. Anyone who finds this hideout is gonna know what’s up right away. Even wearing all black would be less conspicuous.

By in Hungary,

The bear was everything and made such a difference for these forest police sets. I also loved the more pronounced nature elements in an otherwise super dull concrete jungle of police decades.

By in United Kingdom,

I have to know; whose side is the bear on? The crooks deviously trained him up as muscle or am I disrespecting Officer Bruno of the Lego City forest police?

By in Germany,

An example why the crooks are more popular than the police.

Bear is only on bear’s side. And bear is _hungry_!

By in United States,

Look at the story being conveyed here.
These guys just escaped from prison, grabbed a few bits of clothing to try to hide that fact, they robbed some kind of high end bank because gold bars aren't just lying about, and then made it all the way back out into the forest where they had a car ready and waiting to go. Even though the police have spotted them, we're not giving these guys enough credit because they're clearly escape artists and masters of disguise to make it this far without the whole police force chasing them down.
Could it be that this bear has slowed them down? Is the bear the real hero here? The police have heard screams from a possible bear attack, and it just so happened to be these guys who would have gotten away with their crimes? But then there's still a high speed chase that can ensue. What a narrative...

By in Poland,

Anyone can explain me, why this set has only 3,7 ratings?
I get it, that it's not display set, but for reasonable price we have big animal, vehicles, minifigs and house (not wall, like usually in City sets). Good opportunity for kids to create cool stories here. Perfect small set for kids imho.

The crook with the goggles looks more feral than the bear.

This isn't "ripe" enough for a jostlgia remake, and when one comes in 2043, it won't be for me--but I think the "Forest Police" era stands a better chance than most City subthemes of being worthy of it (whether LEGO Icons or some other means of milking adult nostalgia for their childhood toys is still a thing remains to be seen). In a decade absolutely littered with Cops and Robbers, these sets are memorable and are surely building blocks of some big childhood memories.

There's quite a few of them, this year we have 60417 and the one I have is 60137, but together they form something of a subtheme, just take a look: https://brickset.com/sets/theme-City?query=hideout

I too like them, they are complete play package!

@NotProfessorWhymzi:
For anything. If you really know anything about bears, they’re only slightly more picky than goats about what they eat. In Alaska, grizzlies will tear up entire hillsides to dig up cutthroat moth cocoons, and if they happen to live someplace that gets salmon runs, there’s a point when they’ll stop eating the whole fish and just eat the calorie-rich skin. If you leave food where bears can get to it, they’ll eat it wrappers and all. They’ll eat everything from honey and berries to week-old carrion. They do draw the line at empty tin cans or poison ivy, but the range of a bear’s diet is astonishing.

@MCLegoboy:
Alternately, they escaped from prison, knocked off the Costco next door, and one of the Costco employees simply pointed at the shack across the street and said, “They went there.”

By in Netherlands,

I always liked this one. For a City set there is a good focus on the actual building. That of course means there's still three vehicles somehow, but hey, there's also a BEAR!

Couldn't agree more.

I know they're technically 'bison.' But, here, we call 'em buffaloes.

S'ko Buffs!!

Well only 9 of them count as hideouts. The others either weren't released, they were just a money stash or a 3 in 1 pack!

By in United States,

This was an uncommonly good set. It would have been a good set with nothing but the bear, but this has more! There's so much play value in such a small package, and it's such a refreshing break from the routine.

60173 also involved a remote hideout, robbers, and a bear. The minifigures in that set were even better, but the hideout wasn't as substantial, and the police helicopter just seemed overwhelming. So I think 4438 is the winner.

By in United States,

They should do more Lego Police subthemes like this. At least we got the prison island theme for this year!

Didn't realise that the 3 wheeled trike was still being made in 2012.
